Here are a few more candidates for bad actresses playing scientists
Naura Hayden as Dr. Iris Ryan in 1960’s Angry Red Planet
Dr Ryan is a medical doctor with multiple degrees in science
yet all she is allowed to do on this mission is scream, serve coffee and look pretty.
Here is a typical line from one of her male colleagues aboard the spaceship…
“You know, I can't say that I recommend spacesuits for beautiful young dolls. What happened to all your curves?”
Susan Cabot as Janice Starlin in 1960’s The Wasp Woman
Janice Starlin is the brilliant owner of a cosmetics factory
who develops an anti ageing cream out of royal wasp jelly.
The serum will either make her look younger
or turn her into a hideous rampaging wasp woman who kills people.
Guess which one happens…
Yvonne Craig as Dr. Bolen in 1967’s Mars Needs Women
A flying saucer lands on earth with a crew of Martians
whose mission is to kidnap earth women to repopulate their planet.
One of them targets Yvonne Craig (who played Batgirl on TV's Batman)
a nerdy girl scientist who wears horned rimmed glasses
and is just waiting for some romantic Martian to sweep her off her feet. |

I loved Angry Red Planet. Now that you've reminded me of it, I need to go see where I misplaced that DVD so I can watch it again... |

I love the movie too
watching it everytime I could
since I was a kid
whenever it came on TV
(long before cable)
Now I don't know if she was a lady scientist
but for pure outrageouse performance in a Sci Fi role
I'd like to nominate..
Patricia Laffan as Nyah in 1954’s Devil Girl from Mars
A dominatrix clad Martian lady with her very own
death ray wielding clunky robot arrive just outside
a small English inn and proceed to shop for male specimens
to take back with her to repopulate Mars….
for some reason none of the guys want to go with her.
Further bending the rules a bit
I would like to add these two films
where the girls are not necesaryily lady scientists
but more like lady science exibits.
Anna Polk as Jean Norburg in 1966’s The Frozen Dead
Evil Nazi Scientists have a freezer full of Nazi soldiers
all wearing their uniforms just waiting for the time to be thawed out.
Unfortunately they all seem to have brain damage
so the doc cuts off the head of poor Jean Norburg
and experiments with it in his lab.
Virginia Leith as Jan Comptonin in 1962’s The Brain that Wouldn’t Die
After a tragic car accident where a his girlfriend literally looses her head
Dr Bill Cortner does what any concerned boyfriend would do
and keeps it alive in a laboratory until he can find a body to attach it to.
Of course not just any body will do…
This one is the Citizen Kane of severed head movies. |

Ok I’ll admit it…
I love these movies!
Check out
Joan Weldon as Dr. Patricia 'Pat' Medford in 1954’s Them!
Atomic testing in the New Mexico desert creates giant ants
who not only want to wreck picnics but want to take over the world.
It’sa up to Dr. Harold Medford and his daughter Dr Pat Medford
and a whole bunch of cool army guys with flamethrowers
to save the world from Giant Ant Domination!
Ann Frances as Altair Morbus in 1956’s Forbidden Planet
Altaira Morbius is the brilliant daughter and assistant to
Dr Edward Morbius the discoverer of an ancient race called the Krell
and the brain jacking technology that destroyed them.
This movie has got it all
Cool electronic soundtrack and special effects
Robbie the Robot
A neato flying saucer
ray guns and a an ID monster that kicks butt. |

| I thought Forbidden Planet had an almost-too-intellectual storyline for it's time, after all, that supposedly was the downfall of the Original Series Star Trek pilot & it needed to be "spaghetti-westerned" up... |

While Forbidden Planet has its share of serious thinking
it has plenty of goofiness to it too.
For example the whole interchange with the ship's cook
trying to get Robbie the Robot to synthesis hooch for him was a lot of fun
as well as Morphius's daughter driving all the ships crew insane with lust.
One of the elements that lifted the movie up from the Sci Fi of the day
was the seriously earnest performances by Walter Pigeon as Morphius
and a pre pre Frank Drebbin performance by Leslie Nielson as the Captain. |
