What do you guys think? Will Peter ever go back to the future to save Caitlin?

Has the dark future he saw been prevented now? If it has, where is Caitlin then? How does he save her?

Thoughts?

I personally think Caitlin is the least of his worries. He changed the future, so she's possibly safe for now. Peter's likely going to be preoccupied with saving his brother and/or avenging his death.
What worries me is, if Nathan dies, who's going to keep Peter on the straight and narrow? Nathan was the only one who could talk sense into Peter in tonight's episode...and frankly, Angela really wants the boy dead, so he's not going to get any valuable direction from her.

Anyhow, like I said, I think Caitlin got pushed to the bottom of his list of priorities now that he destroyed Strain 138.

Why must it be a plot hole? She was mentioned in this episode as one of the reasons Peter was trying to stop the virus - so she's still on the books. Let's wait for Volume 3 before we call plot hole on what may be a major plot development! Very Happy

Oh - another thing (curse the lack of an edit button!). We still aren't completely clear on how the show is treating time travel in the first place. In Back to the Future Part 2, Doc theorizes (and is later proven correct) that if he and Marty go back to 1955 and steal back the Sports Almanac from Biff, that Jennifer and Einstein (left in the alternate 1985) won't suffer any ill effects from the timeline change, and will instead wake up from it thinking it was a bad dream.

So it is possible that Peter has prevented the virus from causing the 93% future, and now Caitlin is just a short year away - and he can find her later without having to travel through time.

So let's wait and see what develops next year!

When the Hiro we see in "Five Years Gone" is mapping out time, it's all these separate strings branching off from certain events; cut one out, and a whole string becomes invalid. Sooooo . . . looks like our Pete's bonnie wee lass just got A)trapped in an alternate dimension where the vial dropped and the virus got out; or B)has ceased to exist along with that timeline. Yes, i know, time travel has been the bane of this board for like, ever since Future Hiro came back and talked to Peter, or whatever. But come on, seriously . . . she's screwed.

So.... Two choices:

a) She's in an alternate dimension, trapped forever.....

b) That future won't happen, and she'll snap back to the present for Peter to find her.

I wonder it they'll pursue it, or leave it as a plot hole as OF says. I'll like to see them pursue it, myself.

Yer, the future she was in doesn't exist anymore. She's gone. Unless we're taking the 'branching timelines' option - in which case I'm stepping out to save myself a headache!

These are my previous posts about this topic. Be careful not to let your brain explode when you read them. That would be very unfortunate.

Peter's situation right now in regards to time travel is very complex. It would probably take me a long time of solid thinking to figure out what the rules would be, and Peter doesn't seem to have that kind of time, brainpower, or removed viewership. I hope he tries to save Kaitlin, but realizes he can't with spacetime in its current state, and has to consult someone like Hiro to figure out why things aren't working his way, and then eventually saves Kaitlin. I think this would be a great start of the season storyline for Peter provided that it doesn't get screwed up by people who haven't done their research (not being mean, they just would have to be careful.) It would also need to have a few twists to be interesting, but they can work that stuff out easily enough. If they did something like that, they would have my trust and admiration(more than they have now.) I'll try to post my theory about the rules of time travel in this situation when I think of it. chin

EDIT: sorry I didn't realize how much the Peter consulting Hiro thing sounded like Rob M's post. credit to him then, and I think it's a great idea!

I actually started that theory thing, it goes like this, and I'll try not to lose you...
Every moment, the future is being rewritten by the actions of people in the present.
at the start of season 2, We are not sure what the unaffected future would be, because the act of Peter traveling to 1yr later NYC removed him from all the action in between when he would have been influencing events. For the sake of simplicity, I am calling the Future that would have occurred if Peter had not skipped forward future a. Peter then changed that future by skipping forward, and he landed in future b; the future where Peter was not present in that timeline for one whole year. He left Kaitlin in future b, and then immediately began changing events in the present time to prevent that future (a mistake on his part.) His actions since his return from the future have created future c, the future where the virus has been prevented. Kaitlin does not exist in this future, since it is not the future that she was dropped off in by Peter. Peter's predicament lies in finding his way back to future b by removing his influence on the events of 2007, getting Kaitlin out of future b, and then restarting his actions once again to move to future c. The show's ultimate goal is future c, since changing the events since Peter went to Montreal would render the Second Season completely worthless. I believe that the best way for Peter to achieve his goal of saving Kaitlin is to secretly travel with his past self from Montreal to New York as he is headed for future b (stay invisible or something), then wait to teleport Kaitlin back to Montreal secretly just before Past Peter teleports back and erases future b. once he is back in the current chain of events, he can teleport back to the start of season 3 and end in future c. If you can wade through this treacherous swamp of theorizing without getting hopelessly lost, you will be able to start thinking of better ways for Peter to save Kaitlin. This solution was basically my first draft, but I think I'll hold to what I said Peter needs to do, just not how he does it. Whew.

I guess some people (not saying any names, Squeaker Wink ) did not quite understand my point though (and a lot of it is my fault). I was saying that, yes, Caitlin is gone in this future (aka future c), but Peter can actually go back to where Caitlin is in future b by removing himself from this year's events (since his travel forward and absence from 2007 made future b occur in the first place). He could do this by going back in time and then going with himself to future b (since it is not changed to future c until Peter gets back and is reintroduced to Adam.) Part of the difficulty would be getting out of future b before past Peter travels back and eliminates it while not affecting past Peter's decisions that make future c (that whole rule about not affecting your past self because then the future you return to would be different). Peter would obviously have to consult Hiro about this, as he would not be able to figure that out by himself, and that would also make interesting scenes between Hiro and Peter. My original theory dealt with all of this, but it was not that easy to understand (because I tend to write things that only I would really best understand). The main difficulty of doing this on the show would be getting almost everyone to understand it adequately enough to follow the plot, as it does take at least some real thinking, but I think that is part of what the second season lacked.
Hope that cleared some of it up.

and P.S. The theory should actually have 4 futures, the last one being future d that results from bringing Kaitlin to the non-virus future. future c would be the nonvirus future without Kaitlin (before Peter brings her back.) Not that significant, I know, but it might help with the understanding a little. The other possibility would be you getting even more lost. Well, I guess that's life, isn't it? lol

EDIT: I just seem to be getting more complex, don't I? I guess drawing a branching timelines diagram might help. It certainly helped me make the theory.

and, I spend way too much time on these posts. I'm such a nerd. lol

The ONLY way I think getting Caitlin back at this point would be something like..

Hiro goes BACK in the current timeline to before Peter and Caitlin transport to the future
he the goes into the future to the window of time Peter is still there.
gets Caitlin and pulls her back before Peter leaves the future time
All of this has to happen without Hiro knowing what or why he is doing it. If Hiro were to know how time had shifted off track, his knowledge of it would prevent him from getting into the time fragment.
Peter can't do it himself as - he has the "memory" of time altering so he can't get into that fragment himself.

How about, Season 3, Episode 1, Scene 1: Peter, Hiro, and Caitlin materialize in the present time, Caitlin says "Thanks for coming and getting me." Peter: "I couldn't just leave you there." Hiro: "I'll leave you two alone" (teleports) *end scene*

Kring: "Yeah, that about wraps THAT plot hole up. Let's let the fans argue over how it happened."

I dunno.

Season two is chock full of plot holes.

I'd have to say that overall, Caitlin's role in the series isn't going to be deemed important enough for Peter to make a concerted effort to find her again.

Thus, Peter's going to lose his love just like Hiro had to do.

Maybe this common bond will draw those two powerful heroes closer together, and they'll have the opportunity to make some serious waves with the "old school" evolved folks that are still active with The Company.

Or, possibly, Peter will get Hiro's help to avenge his brother's death, since Hiro was so willing to avenge his father's death..

Granted, it's a bit out there, but I think we've seen the last of Caitlin in this series..
