I think a lot of it could be that once he realized he could get people's powers by killing, he couldn't stop himself. His emotional problems with his mom wanting him to be special and spending his life as an overlooked clock builder didn't help either. Sylar loves power, and he gets it by killing people and taking their abilities.

yeah, its just an overwhlming desire to be special, probably inflicted by the constant disappiontment of his mother wanting him to be special
also hedoesnt take peoples abilities that can use them propperly, or the ones that take itin their stride...........ie in 5 years gone he orders the elimination of hiro nakamura instead oftaking his anility |

He first killed someone who had a power that he wanted.
However, this person also didn't want their power. They wanted to be "normal", and couldn't be that way if they had a power.
In his mind, this person was "broken", and he could fix it.
Once Sylar was able to see how the person worked, he could take the power.
Gaining power, he wanted more. He couldn't just stop with one, when there were so many others that were out there that people didn't want. Just out there.. His for the taking!
So I'd agree that initially it was his drive to become more than what he was. However, once he got his power, and became something more, he wanted even more than what he had. Classic self-destructive spiral.
Anyway, he's still going to be looking for that ability which will augment his powers even more. I don't think he's just searcing for any ability like he used to. I think that he's going to be more selective now, and only take those powers which he feels are going to be more useful to him. He's now learned that there are some drawbacks to some abilities, and he's not going to want to take a power that will leave him defenseless, even for a little while.
So there's my take. He's back, he's in full hunting form again, but he's going to keep in the shadows again, for fear of gaining too much attention and getting someone on his back again. He's much better at being the shady evil guy than the arch-nemesis that is cast into the spotlight. |

| Y'know I was watching "The Hard Part" episode with my friend and Sylar's mother was throwing so much pressure on him to be something more than a son of a watchmaker (Teehee. It almost sounded like an insult...sorry). It reminded me of Uchiha Itachi of Naruto. In the sense that both individuals were raised on thought of being all they can be (as in forced) and they finally cracked mentally. So... maybe it's Sylar (or "Gabriel's") neverending wish to be accepted for the limitations he has instead of trying to win over his mother's love. But that contridicts "Sylar's" nin-dou (way of life).... But, what about his Father? You have to wonder if he died or left the family. Either way that can cause LOADS of trauma in a child/teen (or whatever). That can make for a serious case of agression and withdrawl/shyness. |
