When you say "human," you mean someone without any special abilities, right? I would argue that those with special abilities are human as well, but I think I know what you mean.
The only thing is that if a normal human was infected you wouldn't really be able to tell. Yeah, they'd have the non-power-related symptoms, but those could be anything. It would just look like a rapid death if they got it. High fever, fatigue, etc. can belong to any number of diseases. The sudden death is the only thing that sticks out, and by the time you notice it, it would be too late, and would probably be attributed to something other than the sickness like heart failure or something.
Well, here's what I'm thinking along the lines of the virus:
Molly and Shanti had the same virus. One that causes the power to stall, and then forces the host body to shut down, in a fairly quick sequence.
Mohinder has the antidote for this virus in his plasma, which in my opinion seems to have been genetically engineered by Chandra to ensure his son's survival after the Shanti incident.
Maya's power (although undefined at the moment) brings down folks in a different way than this virus, as death is nearly instantaneous when in her area of effect. It only takes minutes, not a couple of days, for someone near her to die, unlike the Shanti virus.
Alejandro's ability is one that seems to reverse the effect of her power. Instead of creating the 'plague' she offers, he emits an 'anti-plage' of some sort, and takes the power into himself, and can reverse the effects of the power being used.
What do you think? Could Alejandro be someone who's power is to reverse the ability of the one he's in contact with? Is that plausible?
It certainly is plausible Jorm, going off of what we've seen so far. And I really do kind of like the idea of that power. I also mentioned I think he might just be some sort of universal cure, in which he takes a sickness, virus, whatever, into his own body and destroys it. I'm having a really hard time believing he will be restricted to ONLY curing maya of her virus.
I agree, after seeing the second episode I'm also leaning more and more towards Maya's virus and Molly's virus as being two different things, though I still think WTTBM has something to do with Molly's virus. He may be the original host of the virus, perhaps somehow created by the original heroes, and this may be why he is seeking revenge now. Just a thought. As far as Alejandro goes, he seems to actually bring the afflictions of others into himself and then heal both the others and himself. Perhaps his blood is a superantibody to any virus or something like that, and he can bring someone else's diseas into himself. Do you think Maya would die of her virus if Alejandro wasn't around to cure her? It's a definite possibility.
I don't think Maya would die from her own power. We've seen that most of the characters with violent powers aren't affected themselves. Take Ted. His nuclear meltdown in episode 17 should have left him with some really interesting scars, if nothing else, but he was as clean as a whistle in the next episode where Matt, HRG, and Ted were trying to escape Primatech.
So I'd say that Maya isn't going to be a victim of her own ability. Granted, she's a bit out of it while her ability is happening, but this is something that probably can't be controlled. Kind of like Molly needing to go into a type of trance in order to find specific specials.

We already saw that she doesn't die if Alejandro isn't around. She killed all those people in the truck, when they left Alejandro behind and she was just sad when he showed up. She had no black tears or anything.
Think of it as timelines as far as the Super’s virus goes.
Virus is prevalent in the present. Molly has it and Suresh’s sister had it. In 5 years past there is no mention of a virus, even thow the president (Syler) was trying to find a “cure” for supers to be cleaned of their powers because they are considered a threat to the majority of the population and of course himself. Suresh was commissioned by the government to find a cure and he stated over and over that he could not find a cure or anything to change supers.
Why in 5 years past was there no mention of the virus or of supers dying from it? If in the present Suresh was so quick to find a cure and figure out the virus he would have certainly figured something out in 5 years past about this virus to stop Supers and their powers. Even if the events would have changed a little he would have found something in 5 years past.
The other curve ball to this is the Hatian. In the present he is infected by it neglecting his powers, yet in the 5 years past he is alive and well. Which means:
A. Suresh gave him the cure (which means Suresh knows how to stop supers).
B. The Haitian never got infected in that timeline, which means this virus is commuted from person to person. Also means that he never came into contact with Molly unlikely since he was still with the company then.
C. Molly is the only person in the world with the virus and she is incinerated by the bomb hence not passing it to anyone. Only problem is the hatian. He got it and we never saw him near molly. He was also out of town and survived the blast in 5 years past but no virus.
These are some of the thoughts I have with Heroe’s and this virus. They should have never traveled to the future and showed us what if. Why? For people like me I love time lines and time mechanics and physics for it. The only thing that could and would make all the above totally a waste of time is if Suresh was not being 100% honest in his speech the first 3 minutes of episode 1 season 2. In Episode 2 Season 2 his speech is made true when he cures the Haitian. We also know the virus is changing rapidly and becoming more deadly from what Suresh told the Haitian after checking his blood.
Anyways my other theory on Maya and her problem is 2 part. One theory is Maya and her TWIN (which they emphasized a lot in the show) brother are like ying and yang. If separated she activates due to emotional distress or panic of being separated.
From mixing the comic and seeing her power I assume she emits an aura of some kind of super plague that infects all those near here and die almost instantly. If the brother is near she is calm and he calms her down. If he is not and she activates then he has to touch her and concentrate. His aura is either a healing aura or one that absorbs another’s power and turns it off when he touches them and concentrates. He cant bring people back to life but if they are still alive he can heal them or at least purify them.
As far as the Haitian timeline thing goes, here's an explanation:
As you said, in five years gone, the bomb went off and Molly died, so the virus couldn't have spread any further by her. This may have even been part of the reason for Linderman and Angela's plan. Stopping the spread of the virus.
Since the current episodes of season 2 are four months later, who's to say the Haitian didn't come in contact with Molly within those four months?
And finally, do we really know that Molly is the only one with the virus, or is the originator of the virus? If Mohinder's sister can have it, maybe there's someone else out there who has it.
Finally, if Worse than the Boogeyman is in New York, this could have also been part of Angela and Linderman's blow up New York plan. And I can't help but still think worse than the boogeyman is somehow tied into the virus.
Ledlevee, that's pretty much my exact same thinking why. WTTB probably had something to do with the bomb. The only thing i noticed was that, molly DIDN'T die from the bomb in FYG, she was still alive, or at least thought to be alive, by future Hiro. Remember he asks bennet for molly walker? But yeah, it seems to me too, that WTTB has something to do with the virus.
Actually, if you'll remember, Molly survived the bomb, because she was one of the ones that Future Hiro rescued and brought to HRG.
There was Candice, DL, and Molly that Hiro first brought to HRG to hide from Homeland Security and Matt Parkman. So she wasn't killed in the NYC blast.
However, there was the assumption that Sylar somehow caught Candice, and masqueraded as Candice when Hiro found her, and thus gained the abilities of Molly and DL when HRG hid their little group.
If this were true, then Sylar would have the virus in 5YG, but he never made mention of it, so I'm sure that the virus ordeal was never an issue back when this episode was shot. After all, it's been readily agreed that this one episode has raised so many more questions than it should have, mainly because of storyline holes..
So, the virus is something that Molly contracted. How? We're not really sure of at this point. However, Mohinder is the cure, and somehow his genes are a central part in why Bob recruited him into OWI.
My thought is that this virus was engineered by OWI as a way to exterminate those with abilities who were too powerful for them to contain or study. But they also had a plant near Chandra Suresh, and when they infected his daughter, they were sure to keep him searching for a way to find and track these folks with special abilities.
This was, of course, well before they knew about Molly. Now, they have Mohinder, who knows how his father's formula for finding special folks works, plus his cure for the virus, so what need do they have of Molly? Not only that, but I'm pretty sure that they also know that Molly is living with Mohinder, so if need be, they have a ready access to be able to get her again if the need arises.
...Why in 5 years past was there no mention of the virus or of supers dying from it? If in the present Suresh was so quick to find a cure and figure out the virus he would have certainly figured something out in 5 years past about this virus to stop Supers and their powers. ...
It might be possible for Suresh to figure out how to use the virus to strip specials of their powers without killing them. Or it might not. Based on the three cases we've seen, people with the virus died, or they recovered and regained their powers.
Mohinder curing people of the virus (using antibodies in his blood) would be quite different from "curing" people of having special abilities.
The "cure" Suresh did come up with in Five Years Gone was more like the virus, but faster-acting. Although the "president" and Suresh could have pretended to have the cure and given out a poison instead - the effect would have been the same as what they were planning.
The Haitian probably caught the virus from someone else if Molly was not contagious after she was cured. On the day of the explosion, that other person may have died, or the movements of people may have changed such that the Haitian never met whoever infected him (whether that was Molly or not) in our timeline.
