Again, there's really not that many new characters that will be a major part of Season 2's story.
Saying that the addition of all of these characters is destroying the show is the equivalent to saying that episode 20 in season 3 of Lost destroyed the show because of the addition of all the new characters. You had Ben's father and mother, not to mention all of the other Dharma workers that showed up in that episode that were nothing more than filler and flavor characters to give you some background and more character depth on the character of Ben.
That's all 75% of these new characters are. Flavor characters. And for the record, that episode of Lost raised Lost's ratings quite a bit. |

Still, that's a TV critic with pull in the Boston TV market saying that... What is Boston like? In the top 10 for sure, right? What kind of effect will his comments have?
I agree with what you're saying, but think for a moment outside of the box.... |

Honestly, for the series to work, it by definition HAS to grow. I don't think it's too large, as there are seperate stories for each.
I agree with Twister on this one, Herc.
There are going to be new characters, yes. However, each is going to be interacting with a character that we from season 1 recognize. They are going to make the world that Tim Kring created seem that much more in-depth and realistic. (Well, as much as us in the Nit-Pick thread will allow these writers, that is!) Anyway, in order to portray this huge world that he's trying to immerse us in, he's got to make it much more diverse, and detailed. Thus, more characters. The main cast we had in season 1 is going to be going their separate ways, but they're going to still be following each one. Now the story is going to revolve around a character, and the people that they run into and interact with.
This is not to say that there isn't going to be some scenario where the old group isn't going to come back together and reunite. But when they do, they'll be bringing along some reinforcements as well.
Think of it like High School, for my lack of a better analogy. You make friends and run in circles during your stay there. However, once you graduate, you move on. Sure, some friends might come along, but as time goes on, you distance from those friends, but you never forget them. During this time apart, you make new friends, and build up new relationships. Come reunion time, you meet with the older friends, and maybe reestablish some ties, but you also bring your current friends back into this mix, making for an even larger group. Same theory here, just on a different tack.
Understand?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not blindly thinking that anything and everything that Tim and these writers come up with is going to be golden. Heck, I'm really disappointed in the GNs we've been getting while waiting for Season 2. But in order to make Season 2 work, they need to expand. And I think that's exactly what they're going to do. Let the naysayers write what they want to. This is probably coming from someone who also said that the show wasn't going to impress many folks because the story that Tim was trying to tell has been done to death. Well, you can see for yourself what kind of crap that was, so why listen to the harbingers of doom about Season 2 before you get a chance to actually see it for yourself?
You know that they caught your attention last time. Give them a chance to do it again before trying to knock it all down. Don't they at least deserve the chance to prove themselves capable of pulling off some impressive ideas? |

I think I'll wait and see how it's done before I decide whether it's a bad idea.
Some story lines from Season 1 have come to their conclusions, freeing up characters for new stories. The only new characters whom I expect to come with a new story are Maia and Alejandro.
Many characters with recurring roles (or were at least important enough to have names) in Season 1 will never be seen again - such as Hope, Charlie, Jackie, Zach, Brody, Thompson, Dale, Zane, Simone (at least I hope so), the guys who took Hiro and Ando to Kaito, the feds who wanted Nathan to wear a wire (I forget their names), and, of course, Isaac and Ted. We might not see Charles, Candice, or DL again. There is room for some new recurring characters to come in - the new characters don't have to be major. It could work out like HRG and Sylar, where a new character's role is expanded if it is working well.
On the other hand, if too many new story lines are introduced or all these new characters are "major", it will get confusing, we'll only see each character for about 3 min. per episode, and/or we have to wait three episodes at a time to see Hiro or Peter or Claire (or whoever your favorite is). |
