Ability Suppression
From Activating Evolution
This unique ability allows a person to suppress the abilities of others. It is thought to suppress through a selective paralysis of the brain, specifically in the frontal lobe where mental abilities manifest themselves. There are only recorded cases of those with the ability to suppress mental abilities such as telepathy and inhibition manipulation, but theoretically, forms of this ability that suppress physical abilities is very plausible.
There exists the possibility that this may be merely an ancilliary effect of Amnemopathy as opposed to an ability in its own right.

John Acevedo asks, "In 'Five Years Gone'/'String Theory,' Parkman states that Peter and Hiro couldn't use their abilities on the same floor as the Haitian, who apparently can block powers. If that's the case, then how come in 'Unexpected' Peter was able to use telekinesis and flight when confronted by Bennet and the Haitian on the roof? Is this an oversight, or will there be a more thorough explanation of how the Haitian's powers work in the future?"
We hope to expound on the Haitian's abilities as soon as possible, starting with a webcomic this summer devoted to his origin. As for the differences in his power in “Unexpected” and “Five Years Gone,” you have to remember what the Haitian as someone who could have fine -tuned his ability in the last five years.
i was just thinking, if this guy's ability is considered mental manipulation, and he can change anything that goes on inside someones brain....
can the haitian permenently remove someone's ability? or better yet... if he had more control and knowledge, can he give a normal person abilities? because abilities manifest inside the brain and if he was able to manipulate brains i dont see why any of the fallowing is not possible.
I think giving and permantly taking away powers is kind of a strech. If that were possible I think the company would have invested in expanding his power instead of making pills to remove powers.
What i find amusing is that in the GN the hatian wiped his whole villages memory completely making them essentially zombies, and he never touched them to do it, just boom, their all blank.

I think from the fact that Peter could heal back his memories shows that the Haitain only surpresses memories, like a deep hypnosis. Which sort of matches his ability to surpess abilities and not take them away.
Not sure if this has been addressed already, but how does the Haitian's ability work with ranged powers?
We saw Elle launch a bolt pretty far to hit West. That distance seems farther than the Haitian can suppress abilities. So what would happen if Elle launched a bolt at him from a distance?
That would be great, it would be different than seeing powers used against each other. I was wondering if you could clear something up for me, this is slightly off but what exactly is the haitian power, because it was said no-one was found with two powers, except peter who absorbs and syler who steals, so is the haitian power to nullify or remove memorys I know he does both but doesn't that contradict the whole no-one has two powers?
Great question, Laughing!
I haven't really kept up with this thread, so pardon me if this has been addressed already, but personally I don't think that The Haitian's powers should be separately thought of as 'mindwipe' and 'nullification.' I think The Haitian's power should be collectively thought of as the ability to shut down a part of the mind, a part of the brain in a sense. By shutting down a part of the mind, The Haitian can 'turn off' the sector that controls abilities. Additionally, by shutting down a part of the mind, The Haitian can also make people forget.
The reason that I don't think either power is a 'development' of the other is because both 'nullification' and 'mindwipe' manifested at about the same time when he was a teen back in Haiti with his father. Usually a development occurs after much usage of a power, as we've seen with Matt (mind control) and Adam (immortality).
I think the development of his ability was being to pick out certain memories from people (as he did with Ivan), and in FYG he had a much larger dampening field.
I wonder if his power could eventually develop to put out a field that would make people around him at the time become amnesiac, but when he left they would return to normal. (the same function of his power negation, but a different effect of it.)
Great theory about The Haitian's power development - I like it.
And that new field-of-amnesia idea is an awesome thought.
Now that I think about it, with his ability and a gun in hand, The Haitian can cause some real damage to other specials...
How about this theory - the Hatian's developed power is giving back memories. Back in Season 1, he specifically told Claire that he couldn't give back memories. However, we know that The Haitian's mindwipe does not take away memories, but rather it damages something in the brain to disable memory (because Peter didn't restore memories, he just healed that part of his mind). Perhaps The Haitian will on day realize that he can heal what he has damaged.
I kinda of like that idea, and it would make sence.
However i think the Hatian's power is slightly similar to Matt's as it is manipulation of the brain. He can block peoples abilities by being near them(as seen several times) and he can either control wether he is blocking their abilities or not himself or their is a plot hole since we have seen both Petrelli brothers use abilities near him.As seen in the GN he was not always able to control it however(as seen by him accidentally removing his fathers ability when it was desperately needed). So perhaps his power causes a small amount of damage slowly to peoples brains who are near him, and when he focuses he can cause specific damage(which would explain how he removes specific memorys). Im fairly sure this is his power because in the GN when he was mad at the villagers for calling his father a fraud he essentially made the entire village into zombies, showing that he can damage their minds without touching them, but by tocuhing them he can focus on exactly what to damage. Id even go so far as to say that if someone was near him long enough they could actually lose their power forever by his power slowly wittling away at theirs
He is a critical character to the show, given that Peter and Sylar look infinitely capable of collecting abilities. And the fact that his motivations are shrouded makes every move he makes unpredictable.
I'm not sure his ability really needs developing given that he has been using it for probably 20 years, would seem a little lame than suddenly it has gotten stronger. I think they need to really delve into his past with his father, and his realtionship with Angela to open us his character a bit more so we can understand his motivations a lot better.
