I've been looking at the map of all the Heroes (Suresh or Sylar edition) but there's something I want to know. The tacs are the location or heroes, but what are the strings? It could mean a lot of things, but I want to know your theories.

One string I noticed goes from Japan (Hiro?) Going East off screen and One comingEast from off screen to SouthWest America I think Las Vegas (Niki?). Are these the same string? The only connection there that I know of as of yet is Ando to Niki's site. It would seem odd that a Dr in genetics is interested in a Heroes friends internet porn addiction that connects him to another Hero. So basically I have no clue. Ideas?

The map in Sylar's apartment had a pic of Nathan over New York, so the pins probably are the Heroes.

The strings...migrations of the gene maybe? Something to make the map look cool? I have no clue and never really thought of it before.

Maybe the strings signify the travel route of the discovery of powers and not necessarily a connection between heroes

Pictures without the symbol are suspected people with powers. With the symbol means it has been confirmed. At least that's my theory. As for the strings, they make it a point on the show to stress that "we are all connected" I think this is how ever hero is actually connected.

The symbol could mean people who Sylar has killed and taken their powers. But then Nathan wouldn't have a symbol. Hmmmm...I am stumped.

I tend to agree with the theory that it somehow connects the mutations of each "hero".

It could be that the strings connect people by lineage, or by mutation of a particular power.

Thanks for all the pics and ideas. I wonder if they will ever really explain it, or if it is just a nice job by the prop department to mess with my mind.

I just want to note that in episode 1 - "Genesis", Tokyo was connected to Beijing, China and Broome/Derby Australia (somewhere in Western Australia) and not Darwin as it could have appropriately been. But that was episode 1 and Mohinder's dad was a different actor in the picture.

New York was also unconnected in episode 1, Texas was missing, and Las Vegas might have been included (it was hard to tell).

Before you trust Sylar's map too much, realize that Sylar killed the wrong cheerleader (so he didn't have a name), did not know Peter had powers (or at least he did not go after his brain), and let himself be caught. He basically seems less omnipotent than we thought. He seems to have clues to people with powers, but not as much as Mohinder's father had.

Maybe it's where they (the heroes) cross paths. Come in contact with another hero.

It seems that they are treating the discovery of powers like a virus. It is possible that the string represent the path of a virus and the different colors represent different strains. My guess is that unlike a normal virus that will invade any host that it can, the DNA altering virus is selective on some sort of basis. Although many people may be exposed to it, it may select very few in which to abide.

That could explain why some maps are cleaner and the threads are regional (Sylar's map is a mess). But as Hiro himself did not seem to have travelled from Japan, it followed that an enabler of some kind is the link that the thread is speaking of.

Maybe that is the key that we find out in the next episode.
