I am curious: Today, Friday, June 22, 2007 Stargate: SG-1 ended it's 10 season run on the Sci-Fi channel. Six of those seasons (or was it 5) were on Showtime. The remaining were on the Sci-Fi channel. They felt like they dragged on forever, because the Sci-Fi channel had the annoying habit of cutting the seasons in half and making you wait for over 6 months to watch new episodes.
To me, the seasons with Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel Jack O'Neill were the best. After the Go'auld were defeated, the new enemies, the Ori, did not seem to be worthwhile as enemies. Still, the show was very enjoyable, with great character chemistry and great moments at times.
So, I am curious? Did anybody else like Stargate SG-1? Did you like the early seasons? What in particular did you like about the show if you liked it?
OR what was it that you did not like? Or maybe, you did not even watch it. It wasn't your thing. If you have the time, give me your thoughts. Thanks!
We own up to season 8... seasons 9 and 10 were not worth buying in our opinion.
My wife has watched each episode at LEAST 10 times.
Lets just say I called the Shagging Daniel as well as the time dilation tricks as they were obvious.
My biggest issue with the finale was knowing Sam Carter was already cast next season on Atlantis.. so you KNEW they were going to figure it out... not that it was a huge stretch... but I would have liked to at least have that nagging wonder about if they would surprise us and kill them off
Oh, definitely! In some ways, SG-1 suffered from the same disease afflicted by Star Trek writers. They would introduce a worthwhile adversary OR someone who could be an ally, but you would never here from them again.
For example, the Nox were one of the original 4 races. Why didn't they investigate them more than they did? I can't believe that a race as powerful as the Ancients or the Asgaards would not be more of a player in Galactic events. What turned them off the whole "Galactic scene"? Right there, you might have even found the story lines for defeating the Ori. Why wouldn't the Asgaard turn to them to entrust their knowledge before dying off?
You also had the invisible spider creatures that infiltrated the SGC once. I don't think they ever defeated them. Weren't they very powerful?
How about that other race that subjugated Earth and sterilized everyone? I know, we eventually met them out there, I know Carter blew-up a bomb on that agricultural planet, but aren't these folks still out there somewhere in the galaxy, WITH SHIPS? And upset? Aren't they fighting the Ori?
How about those other guys, the ones Carter participated in a space race with in order to get a hyperdrive? Don't they have an interest in Galactic Events? Fighting the Ori?
The show left too many holes like these open. When they were dealing with the Go'auld, that was ok? But when they introduced the Galaxy wide threat of the Ori, those threads should have been tied. Somehow. And that irked me.
Still, it was a decent show. That's why I expanded so much energy writing about it. And when it had Richard Dean Anderson, it rocked. So, when I can, I will buy those seasons on DVD.
I still can't believe that it took fifty years to figure out that they could build some kind of accumulator to absorb the blast!
I'd LIKE to think that one of the greatest minds on (from?) Earth, even if it's in a fiction setting, was smarter than me...
Also, wouldn't a pre-programmed self-activating holographic projector be sufficient to place in the "temporal shield" instead of sacrificing 50 years of Teal'C's life? (I thought of that in a little less than 50 years )
I thought that the so-called "series finale" was one of the biggest let-downs of my TV watching life. I, too, have watced SG-1 since the very first season; I got a little disinterested when Daniel left, struggled through after they brought in Ben Browder and Claudia Black (who I LOVED in Farscape, BTW), but "kept the faith" right through to the end. This finale was completely bogus. A: No O'Neil. B:The Asgard suddenly show up and, after all these years, decide to share all their knowldge with SG-1, the ride off into the sunset? Bullsh**!!! C:No resolution to the whole Ori Conflict thing. Not even a mention of Adria, the recently ascended, formerly badass adversary. Is she an Ori now? Guess what -- WE'LL NEVER KNOW!!!! I expected them to at least make it a two-hour event, and give us some sense of resolution to the series. Them not bringing O'Neil into it really bummed me out; that guy made the series for years. Overall, what I got from the finale was a serious sense of disappointment. I mean, when the previews for the "final season" came on, I thought to myself, "This is going to be one killer season of SG-1!!!" Honestly, most, if not all, of the episodes from this season were pretty lame. I agreed with the idea that, while the show would end, SG-1 would keep fighting the good fight on a Galactic scale; I just wanted some kind of resolution to the current Ori stuff. Now, with the brilliant and gorgeous Sam Carter going to Stargate: Atlantis, are some of these storylines going to follow her? I don't know. I just feel like I had bad clams, or something. The way they left us was not right.
Stone, have you heard how THEY ARE going to wrap-up the story line? They are doing TWO 2-HR movies, direct to DVD! In fact, they are completely, blowing us die hard fans off. They're like: "Oh! People, are gone wanna know what happens, they're sure to buy the DVDs!" It's ridiculous.
Man, there were so many holes in the Asgaard giving us everything storyline, that it blows my mind.
[1]Why wouldn't the Asgaard choose to ascend?
[2]Why wouldn't the Asgaard give their knowledge and technology to the Nox or somebody else, more sufficiently advanced?
[3]Why wouldn't the Asgaard knowledge base know that something in the technology was allowing the Ori to track the ship?
That and many other questions in my mind were left unanswered. I already send a letter to the Sci-Fi channel's letter column. I will probably be attacked. I was previously attacked there for being responsible for the demise of "Enterprise". At least "Stargate:SG-1" is done.
Oh, and one more thing. It was LAME how they killed the doctor (Dr. Beckett) on "Stargate:Atlantis" two Epis ago. Now they kill off Dr. Weir. Just so they can bring aboard Full Colonel Samantha Carter.
Oh, BTW, there is another Stargate series in the works with new cast and stories. I am not sure if I will watch.....
They actually did answer this. The Asgard in messing with their DNA and clones broke something in their physiology that prevented them from ever ascending.
The limited human lifespan spurs individuals to strive for everything they can in the time they have, with the cumulative Asgaardian & Ancient Knowledge and enough time to learn from EVERYONE's mistakes humanity might not have a "need" to ever ascend to a higher plane because the dimensional 'ground-state' of our universe can be raised in entirety... so I think that humanity as the "5th Race" is pretty cool.
Does anyone remember the designation of the planet where Ernest was found?
Don't remember . . . do mean like the "P38472" designation (that's not it, that's just my example)
And yes, the fact that the glorious "gift" of the Asgaard's technology was what enabled them to be tracked was RETARDED.
And yes, I will probably buy these DVD's you mentioned; they're gonna have to tie up a lot of loose ends to make it worth it, though. Why couldn't they have just made the last season better? There were too many "fluff" episodes.
For once, we in the UK seem to have been ahead of the game. SG1 finished a few months ago here. I must admit now that, in protest, I refused to watch the last episode. Not much of a protest, I know, but it saves having all my illusions shattered, which is what appears to have happened to everyone else.
Hehe, a bit like "The Fool" in the Tarot deck - they were so paranoid about making sure they didn't accidentaly jump the shark, that they went and forgot to write about anything other than not jumping the shark.
Then they went and jumped the shark. Fools.
Atlantis? It was never really that good anyway. I always call it "SG-Lite"

LMAO!!! I hated it when it first came out; I refused to watch it. Of course, I gradually got sucked in; now that COLONEL Sam Carter's gonna take over Weir's spot, though, I'll have to watch. I just love her . . .
About 5 minutes into the "Beckett dies" episode of Atlantis, I looked over at Zesty, said "Beckett's going to die, there's no point watching the rest." and turned off the TV. It was just so obvious from the outset that that was going to happen.
Still, on the Carter worship front - anyone seen Sanctuary yet? I've seen the first two eps. Looks like it could shape up to be quite an exciting concept.
Oh, and I *way* preferred the original Dr. Weir. That was a convincing actress. Her replacement came across as a whining child. Good riddance, I say!
