I hated them for killing Dr. Beckett. Now there is talk they are going to bring him back in some form? What a cop out!!!
The original Dr. Weir is of course non other than Jessica Steen. You're right, she was a better actress.
Dr. Weir did work for me of course. Hopefully, Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter can do something with the role of running the base.
I'll keep watching... for now. |

| I have to agree that the current Dr. Weir has been extremely lacking. I look at her and think, "If I were a general, or the president, would I put this lady in charge of an extremely important mission in another galaxy?" Inevitably, the answer is no. She just comes off as too soft to manage such a command, in a hostile and mostly unknown territory especially. I think Colonel Carter might be just what Atlantis needs: a strong female counterpoint to Shepherd's . . . whatever. |

About as quickly as I'd put her previous incarnation (conflict negotiator, I believe?) in charge of a secret government project like the SGC, impressive character performance notwithstanding.
Atlantis characters seem to be written more to enable far-out plots than to be believable characters. I mean, the SG-1 team were misfits to say the very least, but they were believable misfits. Don't get me wrong, the Atlantis crew ARE interesting characters, just totally unbelievable as a joint military/scientific expedition force. Oh, and Rodney's become so predictable it's just not funny.
Still, 9 years of mostly incredible sci-fi from one format and one (fairly rigid) set of characters is an accomplishment that is in no way reduced by a washout final season or by a candy-coated spinoff.
I'm grateful for what I got |

Oh, don't get me wrong, Slip, I friggin' LOVED SG-1. LOVED it. Still watch the reruns late at night when nothing else is on, and thoroughly enjoy them. The show's been on so long, watching it end was like sending a kid off to college or something.
The differences between the main characters of SG-1 and Atlantis are VAST. The crew of SG-1 was believable, to me. Atlantis, on the other hand, just seems . . . slipshod? Thrown together? I mean, you mentioned Rodney: his blessedly brief appearances on SG-1 were one-dimensional, at best. That trend continued, with a few minor glimpses of a real person beneath the cockiness, on Atlantis. What's sad is that when Sam Carter gets to Atlantis, Rodney's gonna have a conniption fit. Do ya' think they'll try to have the two end up together? I really wanted to see her and O'Neill end up together . . . Guess that bird has flown . . . |

I think Sam'll only take so much, then she'll shoot him, lol. Or Rodney's gonna end up ascending out of sheer frustration.
Nah, it would have been too easy to have them get together properly. The fact that they keep denying their love (even after admitting it under the zatark detector, lol) has given their characters a lot of inner-conflict, which makes for some excellent plot-twists. It's why the replacement's on SG-1 didn't QUITE manage to pull it off. The fact that they seemed to play them so similarly to their farscape characters - despite the factual differences between the two sets of roles - also spoiled the illusion somewhat.
Hehe, you said slipshod. That's one of my aka's. |
