Let's suppose that DL gave Niki's heart a squeeze. It could cause her to collapse as she did and possible be fatal if he had prolonged it. I think someone earlier hit on what could be a key, that Niki's split is mental, but they share the physical aspect of her body. The results of DL's attack could cause damage to her mind due to a lack of blood flowing to her brain. This could result in a more decisive split or Jessica gaining more control of her body.

I think if you dont get air for a short time you just pass out. So I think D.L stopped her heart for a sec and Nikki 2.0 passed out, then it took another sec for Nikki 1.0 to wake up then pass out as well. I dont believe either is gone for good. They are a part of a whole and the story line needs to open up a bit more.
