We know that Peter's alive. Nathan, at the very least, does not. And Angela seems to be doing a pretty good job of acting like she doesn't know that he's alive. Yes, he's in the trailer, but WE'RE the only ones that know that. To the characters of the show, he is presumed dead.
Hehe... which is why I suggested that Angela has something to do with the 'kidnapping' of Peter, and maybe even the plan of Boogyman #2. She is a very smart woman, so personally, I think she knows Peter has to be alive and well somewhere, even if she had nothing to do with his kidnapping.
And I'm very compelled to side wth your Kaito = time traveler argument, Acidman. However, if this was the case, then technically he should have his ability WAY under control by now - so why wasn't he the one to kill Sylar instead of his son?
As for Matt: Is he going to be the same Matt we knew, or is he going to be hell-bent to stop the 'dangerous' heroes by tightening Homeland Security? Is he going to go down the path we saw him take in 5YG, or is he going to make some other decisions, and stick up for his own kind? How much influence do you think Angela is going to have on him? Will she be holding some kind of secret over his head, to force him to work with her, or will he join her willingly?
Here's my theory - I mentioned it in another thread, but out of all of the people that Angela could have gone to about the whole "Sylar killing Peter" issue (because that's what I think she will now claim), she goes to MATT PARKMAN (after all, Parkman says to her, "Who wants revenge, Mrs. Petrelli?"). So - why does she go to HIM?!?!? Here's my theory - in the four months that he's been healing, he's also already been offered a job at Homeland Security after being shot and nearly killed by Sylar, a man who is probably labeled as a major terror threat by the government. If not yet, he will be soon. Thus, since Parkman was once an officer of the law and has had many encounters with Sylar, perhaps they feel that he is the right man for the job.
That is the only reason I can find for Angela going specifically to Matt in the preview, not to mention that there's some other guy with Matt almost acting as a partner, or maybe a lawyer, of sorts.
Matt is a bit wishy-washy, but Angela has made me thought of her as nothing more than a cold and calculating machine. Unless she had some major hold over Matt, I wouldn't and really can't see her using Matt to any real extent.
Matt has shown that he's eager for advancement, so maybe Angela used her contacts to help further Matt's career, and because of this, she now has him in her back pocket. That's the only way I can see her using Matt without worrying when he'd turn on her.
Thus, Matt is her new bloodhound, and is trying to deflect Nathan from looking for Peter by making Nathan believe that Matt's looking for Peter, and Nathan needs to focus on his own issues, and not worry about his brother. Meanwhile, Matt knows that Peter's isolated, and still a threat, even though he's not really the same Peter that he first met.
That's a pretty cool thought, Jorm, and I agree with it to an extent. But my question for you is, do you think Matt has already become a part Homeland Security as seen in "Five Years Gone?"
I'm thinking that whether or not Angela has him under his sleeve, he's definitely an officer of higher power right now, and she could have indeed used her own influence to get him there.
However, I disagree on the Nathan statement. It's clear from the Comic-Con preview that
she is trying to make Nathan believe that Peter is dead,
so with that said, I think the only "job" she could give Matt (that Nathan knows about) is to 'investigate' and look for the dead body.
And so if Nathan knows about Matt and the fact that he's investigating, then he has to be wondering at some point "Who the hell is this guy and why did my mother go to him for 'help'" since Nathan and Matt have never met, so that's the main reason as to why I believe Matt is definitely an officer of a higher power right now, more specifically Homeland Security.
There is the chance that she doesn't have Matt under her sleeve at all. No matter how many connections she has, Angela and Nathan still have to act (and be treated as) normal human beings in the public eye. Word will of course get out that the congressman's brother was in NYC at the time of the explosion, but now he's gone missing, coincidentally the same day that the congressman was elected. Even if they manage to keep secret the fact that Peter was in the city at the time of the explosion, the public will still be wondering where he went and why he is missing. Who knows - maybe it is Matt who brings in Nathan and Angela for questioning (rather than Angela going to Matt). After all, the government is going to of course investigate any family who may have been the target of/involved with a terror threat.
While "Five Years Gone" was supposed to be just one of many possibilities for the future, for the most part I actually see it unraveling just like that.
While, I will agree with some of the details you all discussed concerning what MIGHT transpire between Angela, Nathan and Matt, I do not believe that the case for Matt Parkman going down the dark and lonely path of "5YG" in Homeland Security absolutely has to transpire in that way.
I believe we will see echoes of that. But it appears to me, the new character of the Detective in NYC (I forget the character's name right now), will have something to say about the investigation into the goings on in the Petrelli family.
I also, strongly suspect that what will temper Matt in his hell bent ways is the imminent arrival of his son, and Molly. Also, remember in "5YG", he was actually manipulated by Sylar. Here, the manipulating entity is Angela and/or possibly a lot of it is driven by Matt's own ambitions as you guys have already stated.
So, I believe, Matt will travel down that path, but ultimately, might have a redemption story line in his future..... Or I could be completely wrong.
So are you insinuating that Matt is going to be season 2's Nathan Petrelli character?
A bit shady, willing to do most anything for his own ends, but in the end makes the correct decision, which stamps "paid" on all his past transgressions?
If so, then I'd propose that Nathan is going to be season 2's Peter!
@ PK - Matt isn't homeland security... if you watch the trailer closely you will see that he is wearing a cop uniform which means he has gotten his job back. if he was HLS then he would be wearing some suit... also in the season two promo, he wouldn't step out of a COP car.... ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSqVRUlvOjA ) <-- that one
I think Matt is going to walk into this blindfolded, not gonna be sent there...
Matt is a nice guy and i think he is going to see Angela to say he is sorry for her loss and all. And assuming Angela's ability is nothing like the Haitian's... Matt will be able to read her like a picture book, two pages at a time. And since he is going to catch her thinking about her evilness he will be all over her like a big brother.
We know that Peter's alive. Nathan, at the very least, does not. And Angela seems to be doing a pretty good job of acting like she doesn't know that he's alive. Yes, he's in the trailer, but WE'RE the only ones that know that. To the characters of the show, he is presumed dead.

I'm skeptical of my own idea now, heh. I re-read that and realized that I misread it as something else. Kaito could still be a timetraveler, but I think it's less likely now. I was assuming that it said Ando goes back and forth between feudal Japan and present New York, and the only way he could do that is if there was another time-traveler. Kaito's the only such person on the show that's linked to Ando in any way and Hiro at the same time.
Just to humor you though
He didn't kill Sylar because Hiro is the next generation, and someone needs to train him. On top of that, killing the villain his son was destined to kill could create a rift in time causing another alternate future to emerge, which is exactly the opposite thing we want to see happen.
Hopefully he has a different power though.
To .Vault:
I think Matt getting out of the cop car is supposed to be symbolic. He's wearing the overcoat... I'm guessing he got a promotion. He probably finally passed the detective test (It looks like a black version of the jacket that Lenny wears on Law and Order SVU ) and moved up. He's leaving the cop car behind, because he's not a beat cop anymore.
Especially if you look at the other characters and listen to the monologue. Niki's looking into the mirror, saddened that all she sees is her own reflection, while Mohinder says, "But only by leaving our past behind, can we then push onward, into an unknown tomorrow. *Matt steps out here* Into the dawn of a new future."
"And there [will] be parallel times, the modern time and the ancient Japan, so I'm...in the present day, going back and forth between New York and Japan, and there's going to be some kind of connection between me and Hiro...But you have to wait until Sept. 24 to find out." "
Ando's going to be in Feudal Japan? and he goes back and forth? With the recent spoiler that says Kaito's power is shown in the first episode (assuming it IS Kaito's power that's shown) and Ando calling him "Master" in the Comic-con trailer... Well, let's just say I only see this leading in one direction. It's, personally, a direction I'm not liking.... but it's sounding like our only choice. Kaito has time travel too.
Hiro will be sending scrolls with messagses about what is happening to him in the past to Ando in the future. (remember how he reversed time for just the gun when Hope shot at him? He's sending the mini-scrolls forward in the same manner.)
The message is addressed to Ando (and is being held by him) and says something to the nature of "This is the biggest journey of my (Hiro's) life. I am living out our childhood imaginations/ stories of Kensei."
