Just my guess (and I think I said this in another thread), but I think Peter is supposed to beat Sylar. He will need to absorb Claire's power to survive the final showdown.

He might have to mimic all their powers to defeat him not only Clare's.

It's been demonstrated that Peter can mimic powers, but at a weaker level. Nathan could fly about while Peter could just hover, and he could just scribble the future and not actually paint it like Isaac. Sylar would probably still win unless Peter had several power sets around him to mimic (i.e. multiple people).

Just had a thought, Maybe Clare's real father is Sylar. How weird would that be.

After much thought, I agree that Peter is the one to defeat Sylar. After all, why would Hiro choose him to visit when travelling back to the past? But then again, it may just be because Peter is a power absorber, which as we can see from the preview of Ep. 5, he uses Isaac's power to see the future. I feel Peter has proven to be the most mature character up until this point in terms of taking things seriously... he's the only one that see's potential in himself. Nathan rejects his ability, Hiro (present Hiro, not future Hiro) seems a little childish with his powers, Claire is a little like Nathan in that she will not accept her powers, etc.

Also, in regards to Peter, one thing I am wondering is if he is around a lot of people with powers, does he absorb them all? This also may be the key to killing Sylar. And also, if he is to fight Sylar, can he absorb Sylar's powers as well. "Save the Cheerleader" may indeed prevent Sylar from eating her brain, as some have hypothesized, but it also may be the key to allowing Peter to effectively fight Sylar and not die. Also regarding Peter, in Ep. 4, Hiro says "You look different without your scar," which implies that Peter may in fact be the one to fight Sylar, and the result of that fight is Peter receiving a scar across his face.

Lastly, my friend just brought this up, but we think that the little girl Sylar tries to kidnap in Ep. 3 has powers as well, which is why Sylar is after her. It would also explain why he simply just couldn't kill her or move her with his telekinesis. If this is the case, at first I thought that she may have had some kind of power cancelling ability which is why Sylar couldn't use his powers against her (like Leech in X-Men), but then I realized that if this was the case, then the cop wouldn't have been able to hear her thoughts. Anyway, I eagerly await Ep. 5. Hope you enjoy my post/thoughts.
