I guess there may be some use for this thread after all.
Here's my post from the Sylar thread:
Quote:
The roach may serve some signifigance, indeed, as we've got another clip of it BACK in the show. Only I don't think anyone's noticed it yet (if they have, I haven't seen any posts about it). I noticed it when I went to theheroeschronicles.com, and downloaded their high definition trailer for the April 23rd episode. It's the original version without dialogue, but I thought I'd see if I could spot anything anyway. I did.
At 12 seconds into the spot, we see a montage of images, some old, some new. The one in particular I'm talking about is the one with Matt in a cell at the company. Passed out on his side, he's got some company with him that one may not notice unless looking for something. The camera zooms in quickly, and very quickly passes by this friend of ours.... the roach.
Either the Company has an infestation problem, or the roach has a significant role, though we don't know it yet. One thing I do know? Roaches that size and variety are NOT domestic to Texas. Could it be Candice shifted down to spy on captives? Could it be some other special we've yet to meet, that may have an ability to control/speak to insects? Could Mohidner have been right, and perhaps it's God keeping an eye on our heroes? Either way, the roach seems like a recurring character, to say the least.
Sightings of the roach, as far as we know:
1. Mentioned by Mohinder during his class back in India. (Genesis)
2. Stepped on by Mohinder in his father's Manhattan apartment. (Genesis)
3. In Sylar's cell at the Company (The Fix)
4. In Matt's Cell at the Company (Presumably ".07%", seen in a preview)
The interesting note between all three physical sightings of the roach is that all its scenes have ties to the Company. In Suresh's apartment in Genesis, Mohinder sees the roach shortly after saying "They've been here, too", in reference to HRG. If I've missed any other sightings, let me know.
Not a visual but... in "Unexpected" Dale notes that when she first realized her powers, the sound of a cockroach's footsteps in her neighbor's home sounded like "a marching band. "
Im not sure if the cockroach is any more vital to the story other than being a nice symbol for evolution. But I do like the theory that Sylar somehow gained abilities from one.
How could Sylar remember Claire or anything else after a visit from the Haitian?
How could he convince a medical doctor that he was dead?
Firstly remember that Sylar obtained Charlie's memory ability. I believe that this is what helped him to counter-act any mind wipe that the Haitian did to him. Thus, he remembers Claire and her relationship with HRG.
Secondly, this enables him to remember all the other powers he has stolen and how to continue to do so. He removes the brain of the roach and studies it to discover some of the self-preserving features of that species (i.e. a roach can live for hours without its head, survive all kinds of radiation/chemicals). By copying the roach, Sylar is able to seem dead, even to a medical doctor.
I think I meant to ask whether eating bug brains was MORE gross than eating human brains. Sylar probably doesn't find anything too disgusting at this point.
Someone posted elsewhere that Texas does not have roaches like the one shown in the TV show. I lived in Texas for two years, and while I didn't see any like the one at Primatech, there were flying cockroaches well over an inch long. Somehow being able to fly made them more disgusting. Some of the insects I saw there should have had landing lights. That's why I live in the north now. We do have some pretty hefty slugs, but they don't move too fast, so they're easy to avoid. The day I can't avoid slugs because they're flying around my head - well, let's just say I'd have to check my medication.
End of my completely irrelevant digression about invertebrates.
They must mean something by putting the roach in there so often, but I'm not sure that's how Sylar learned how to play dead. Cockroaches can survive a lot of things, but I think once they're dead, that's it. I'm leaning toward it being a symbol of evolution.
Just think, while Sylar was locked up at Primatech, the roach was his only friend...
Maybe it is time to check my medication - the caffeine, anyway.
Really awesome, and completely improbable thought:
Mo's speech: "Capable of living for weeks without a head."
This whole being pushed out a window business would be pretty sweet (although a little too graphic for network television) to see them pull a Ghost, and have a broken window come crashing down onto Sylar's neck, decapitating him. At which point he gets up and proceeds to carry the rest of his role out in the show as a decapitated body running around killing people.
Can a body without a brain use telekinesis if the telekinetic movement is generated from his finger?

I am going to have nightmares tonight, Acid. Thanks very much.
I believe Roaches can live w/o their heads because they have a secondary brain in their abdomen. So if powers are in the brain, then having TWO would be handy!
You know i really wanted to believe the whole sylar studied the roaches brain or ate it theory...but now i can't. If sylar can study or eat a roach's brain to fake dead or come back from the dead or whatever then that would or should mean that he could do that to any animal or insect and gain their traits. But also....that might explain some of the things we see from sylar that are more than human such as how some say he has super speed or super strength. these have been opposed by others by saying that those are just forms of his telekinesis...but what if sylar CAN take things from animals or insects? if he can take something like that from a cockroach then he should pretty much be able to do that to any other animal or insect. why not take a dog's keen sense of hearing and smell...or a cat's ability to see better at night. I'm sure you catch my drift. but i don't know if they'll go that far as to give sylar the ability to do THAT as well. so i'm not so sure he took anything from the cockroach and it's just a symbol. but here's hoping for something more.
This may not belong on this thread, but it was mentioned so I will pose my question. Do we know that Sylar was near charlie when she died? I remember seeing him in the booth and her being in the back opening a can and then dying. But did Sylar go to the back or did he use TK from his seat to kill her? I am still in doubt that he gained her power.
