I see what you are talking about before Sylar knew about Maya and Alejendro before he knew they had powers. He was still using them to some degree to help him get out of his situation though. The powers just escaluated the situation and changed his plans.
With Kirby Plaza I took Sylar as being cynically sarcastic when he called Peter a hero. So for me I don't consider that one, but to each thier own!
You guys must have a very different definition of what is good and evil.
Sylar (aka Gabriel Gray) is a MASS MURDERER. At every step of the way he knows exactly what he is doing. He is completely EVIL and there is no redeeming value in him. I see no good in him. Even at Kirby Plaza he was goading Peter into an evil act. And right now he is setting up Maya and Alejandro. As for what will happen when he reaches NYC with them....
Yeah, we will see the cockroaches.... Maybe they transferred the whole mythology to him. Maybe he's Kane.
Sylar was civil to Maya and Alejandro before he knew they had powers because he NEEDED THEM TO SAVE HIS LIFE.
Somewhere, inside Sylar (deep, deep inside) is the potential to be good, but he's chosen for so long to indulge his lust for power at the expense of others' lives that he may never experience that potential. He kills for power. He kills to keep his secret. He was willing to explode and destroy NYC, killing randomly on a scale previously only possible for a military. But he is not insane. He knows that he is killing other human beings who are not a threat to him.
While I maintain that he has a potential to become good, overall, Sylar is evil.
I believe Sylar has the power to either take the from of a cockroach (How to stop an exploding man) where he would've survived Pete's Bing Bang. And he could put his mind in one maybe, leaving his body to die when he was in his cell. We know he's got loads of other abilities that he hasn't shown yet.
I'm not so sure, that idea has been discussed in quite great details between these guys, it doesn't explain the Cockroach being around in Parkman's cell or any of the other places we have seen it. Plus I just don't believe the writers would give him a power like that, it just seems pretty lame to me. Good explanation of his body dying in the cell though! (thats one bit I think is cool!)
Maybe cos there is a lot of cockroaches in 'very secure/info-heavy area's' can't be a coincidence. Maybe they're spies, maybe one hero can command cockroaches? or insects in general. Monroe maybe, over seeing everything.
I think the eclipse, the cockroach, the symbol in many cases, and similar things are just symbolism used within the show and they aren't caused by anything, including heroes' abilities, they are just symbollic of what's going on within the context of the show. Kensai and Sylar are both very cockroach like, hence the cockroach symbolisim. The cockroach in Parkman's cell symbolized his surviving through a rough time. Symbollism, nothing more. Very significant to the story, but not in an immediate way. I was an English major, lol.
Ok, I know his mother's place ended badly, but it obviously wasn't his intention for things to turn out that way, I put that one down to an accident really.
As for 2. You could say that, but at the same time, he didn't know that they had powers to begin with, yet he was acting perfectly civil towards them. Now that he knows, well yes, it's more of an act now, but he's not a mindless killer either since he hasn't attacked them (at least not yet)
For 3. I mean the way he talks quite sensibly to Peter, saying that he is actually the hero, and that he knows what is going on.
For 4. That's why I said (at least for a little while). I know he ends up attacking her, but it is an example of when he was acting perfectly normal.
By the way you think dictators who murder millions to obtain power aren't really evil because it merely forwards their goal of being obtaining power for themselves. Most of those are perfectly charming men. Just because somebody smiles an makes jokes, it doesn't mean they aren't evil. Hitler an a popular person in his circle of friends. Murdering anybody for personal gain is clearly evil regardless of the reason.
For 2: Nobody says Sylar is a mindless killer. He is a cold blooded one however and fully knowing what you do surely makes you all the more evil?
For 3: He was twisting words so he could make Peter lose it. He enjoyed the fact Peter was in a no win situation - he had to stop Sylar, but would explode in the process or Sylar would kill him and gain his power. Just because you think that it's good achieving your goals and they are more important than everybody elses lives, it doesn't mean you aren't evil.

Look, he is without question the coolest character in the series, and while he occasionally displays a conscience, he is a murderer who has killed 23 people at last count...no matter how much he wants to change, that little fact does make it a moot point ("Sure I killed 23, but I like helping puppies!"). If he is to be redeemed, we'd need to see a split, with Gabriel getting rid of the evil half, Syler (oh wait, we've seen that....please, no more peronality splits). He is likely to kill Alejandro and use Maya as a weapon...his ability to reverse her will give him what he truly wants...the power of life and death.

Hmm... I don't that Sylar wanted to "save" the city, persay. I believe he just wanted to be the one that didn't explode, which would make him the "hero" and Peter the "villian" for killing, or involuntarily killing, millions of people. When Sylar painted the explosion on the ground in his mother's blood, that sealed the deal for me in that he truly is a psychopath bent on becoming the most powerful person in the world. I mean, c'mon, who in their right mind paints in blood, let alone their own mother's?!? lol, I don't believe that Sylar will ever redeem himself, and I sort of like it like that. Maybe the occasional conflict of conscience would be interesting, but nothing more than that in my opinion.

Sylar taking the form of a cockroach? Even if he can, which i don't see how, he was pretty much out of it, once he got stabbed. He probably wouldn't have had the strength to use his abilities. It's obvious that someone dragged him off and saved him.

That someone being ruler of the cockroach people, the cockroaches are his spies. whoever he is.
Sylar doesn't think killing evolved humans is bad, they are 'Unworthy' of abilities. However killing so many normal people really hit him hard when he found out (thinking he was the one to cause it), like all psychopaths there's a bit of human in there somewhere. me thinks.
