Well Stone, some folks tend to roll craps when tossing the dice.. You just happened to be one of the 'unlucky' ones this time around.. Become a believer in reincarnation, and then you can take satisfaction in the idea of getting that next roll of the dice.. Who knows? You might be George W. the next time! (I don't know if that's a step forward, or a step back, however!)
Anyway, I tend to agree with everyone on the whoe Stem Cell research. After all, abortion is legalized, even though we have protesters sitting on every abortion clinic in the continental US. Since abortion is legalized, and there is the definite possibility of being able to harvest Stem Cells from those recently aborted, why not make use of it? It boggels my mind to think of the steps that we're missing when it comes to research and development! And the cause of most of this? Small, radical groups that know how to put a nasty spin on a topic, and get it frozen. To put this idea into perspective:
I live close to Portland, Oregon. Since I've been old enough to follow political views, I've seen quite a few measures passed that have totally boggled my mind.
I mean, they shot down the Trojan nuclear plant because they felt that it was a hazard to the environment, however, they didn't take into account the loss of power production, or the loss of state revenue from the sale of the excess power to California or Canada. Then, when those two deficiencies surfaced, they pointed the blame at the researchers, and not their own groups!
I tend to ignore most 'hotbed' topics, as it mainly tends to be someone trying to inflame someone with their ideals and beliefs. However, on the topic of research, I say that if it could help save lives, why not give it a chance when there are resources out there that could be used to help people? I don't get the argument, and I don't think I ever will, honestly.
You make a good point with the whole abortion thing, Jorm. Yes, it's grisly, and no, we don't like to talk about it, but that won't make the situation go away. Yes, if the "resources" are just going to be disposed of as medical waste, wouldn't they be put to better use trying to improve peoples' lives? There are just too many people out there who refuse to look to the future. Yes, we must learn from the mistakes of the past, and listen to the wisdom whispered from the past, but when has a similar situation come up before now? Never, that I can think of.
I was afraid, I was being way out there with my views, but I see that on this issue, at least the few of us who have contributed to this thread seem to feel similarly.
That heartens me. To think, that there is still a place that intelligence trumpets fear.
Heck, if that's your definition of normal, then heck, you're all quite normal. However, let me know if you need cash! I can guarantee that we'll get great reviews travelling with a carnival or something as a sideshow!
