Just a thought here. We know that Claire did not die at the hands of Sylar in the Homecoming episode, but let us suppose that Peter had not intervened and she had died. HRG, who is usually well in control of his emotions, was starting to go a little nutty and showed a great deal more emotion than previously. If Claire had been killed, HRG might have "lost it" and decided to use all of his powerful friends to destroy the world. HRG reasons that if a sweet innocent cheerleader is not safe in this world, then the world is not fit to survive. By saving Claire, HRG returns to his calm, controlled self, relieved that Claire is OK and the crisis is averted. HRG now turns to the person who threatened Claire, and Eden and VooDoo have apparently captured Sylar.
Well if you go by the theory that Sylar eats peoples brains and takes their powers, the if he had killed Claire and took her powers he would be unstoppable. He would have all his powers and spontaneous regeneration so he could do whatever he pleased.
Tying this in the the explosion of NY, Sylar could, aftere he has Claires power, target Ted. If he gets Teds powers, he could blow himself up and all of NY and then regenerate again.

I think he may already have the power of regeneration. He was shot by Matt a few episodes back when he saved his FBI girlfriend, he got up and flew away, and he was also able to get up and walk away from falling off the top of the sports complex with Peter in the homecoming episode.
peter absorbs power...and it seems as if they (the writers) are portraying peter as a leader type. without claire, peter wont be able to regenerate when hurt, therefore, peter dies. if peter dies, then the world is done. just a thought.

I doubt he regened from the shots. If anything think of the Pheonix on xmen who cacooned herself to protect from damage with TK which would most likely be the cause for him flying back but not dying. If he did have regen then why walk injured and slow up the hill. He wasnt healing anytime soon. Now he would be unstoppable if he took Eden and the haitian guys powers rather than claires.

Well, he did walk away with a limp.... And I agree that the end of the World may have come from him using Ted's and Claire's powers combined, and that saving Claire has prevented this for now, though New York may still die.
What if one of Claire's parents had regen abilities also that were then genetically passed on to her? What if Sylar is the one who killed them and that is how he was able to survive the bullet?
I've been running my own theory through my head, as disconnected from all reality as it may be.
Ted goes nuts, starts going all china syndrome. Claire, and by her Peter, are able to get close to Ted and settle him down before he goes boom. Claire and Peter would be the only ones able to withstand the radiation without permanent damage.
As for the Sylar and the bullets, he may have used his TK in a way similar to say, a kevlar vest. You still feel the bullet, you still get the force, but the speed is reduced to a point where it does not puncture the skin. (may leave one heckuva bruise, though)
