Due to NBC corporate greed, we will no longer be able to download Heroes via iTunes.
No word yet on whether the same will happen with Microsoft's XboxLive Marketplace.
I don't know about you guys...but I canceled my sattellite service because I only watch Heroes and a couple other shows. So, I have only one recourse... @.@ |

Fatalmoon,
You just beat me to the punch! I was about to post about it. Here is a link about it:
Apple, Striking Back, Bars NBC Sales on ITunes
You can probably still get the episodes on NBC's website.
Personally, I side with Apple.
I HATE ALL THESE COMPANIES that are trying to control content on the internet. I hate the fact that they are trying to decide what we can watch, what we can download, how much we can pay and from where. I mean, they are trying to control the shape of what they are calling the Web 2.0. Basically, what they are talking about, you'd have to pay, to do ANYTHING on that WEB 2.0.
I am not happy about it.
And then you have 70 year old legislators in Washington that can't even keep their pants on, trying to decide these matters?
For goodness sake...!
Would writing NBC help? |

Apple's making a smart move. They're saving their reputation by banning NBC. $4.99 an episode? The executives at NBC must be smoking some pretty potent stuff if they think people will pay that much per episode.
Even if Apple gave in to their demands, NBC would lose money. I don't think most people (myself included) could afford paying that much per episode. For that, I'd wait for the DVDs to come out at the end of the season. Doing the math, this upcoming season of Heroes would be $4.99 x 24 episodes = $119.76!! And that's NOT including Origins, which would increase the price to $149.70! Even the HDDVDs for Season 1 weren't that expensive! |

Another side to the story.
I have downloaded both "Battlestar Galactica" and "Heroes" from iTunes. I have also bought songs from iTunes. Personally, I side with Apple on this one:
NBC, Apple play game of brinkmanship
I hope, the conglomerates lose. I hope NBC Universal loses. I hope the Music Labels lose. For the most part they don't deliver music I want to hear anyway. All they want to do is make money. IF they raise their prices -- I will not pay their inflated prices.
Let's see what happens. |

The article didn't change my mind one bit. It just makes me dislike the big companies even more. They're just a bunch of greedy people. Apple's current prices are as good as they're going to get. Any more and, for the most part, you're paying too much. An album on iTunes costs roughly $15, give or take a few dollars. That's what you pay for if you get it at Best Buy (at least where I'm from). Raise the price to anything above $1.20, and you're paying more than $20 for an album that probably sucks anyway, given the current state of the music industry.
And about TV, like the article said, people don't need to watch TV on their iPods. I bought two episodes of Heroes to watch while on my trip to Italy this past summer, and I think I watched them once. It's rather inconvenient on a screen so small. Why bother, when there are bigger, high-def TV screens in this world? I'm sure people would rather go without TV on their iPods than shell out $4.99 a pop for something they can watch for free on a bigger, better screen, even if their TVs aren't anything fancy. It's a no-brainer. |

It's really amazing how many people are under the misconception that anything you get on iTunes has to be viewed or listened to on an iPod.
#1 you can view it on your computer screen.
#2 you can watch it on your TV via a special device
That's how I watched Heroes last season. On my nice big HDTV. Now I have it on HD-DVD and it's even shinier. ^_^
But, I agree. $4.99 is absolutely absurd. They should be damn thankful we don't all have DVR's that will cut commercials out altogether so they get absolutely nothing, eventually. |

Actually, I think I cheated
I took and hooked up my DVR to my computer, removed all the commercials, and burned the 23 episodes I'd recorded onto DVD-ROM this last summer!
Does that make me a pirate? *yarr!*
Anyway, I can't really see shelling out more cash each time we try to watch something. Honestly, who are these companies that say we need to pay for each and every thing that they put on the 'Net?
If that's the case, then I think they need to pay me for each stinking pop-up and spam email I get from accessing their sites for the hardship and trouble it takes me to remove the stinking stuff from my computer and desktop!
After all, that's what their reasoning is behind us paying more for each episode we watch, so why not use their same reasoning against them? |

There's nothing wrong with that. I burned all episodes to disc from my DVR. But I also bought the DVD Set. The reasoning? Well DVDs DO GET SCRATCHED. For casual viewing, I have my owned burned copies. For enjoyment, and extras, I have the bought set.
I have nothing against creators. They need to get their due. I hate greedy companies in charge of copyrights. That's my problem. |

Oh no, don't get me wrong. I totally know you can watch it on your computer or use AppleTV. But for what I need (and for much of the uninformed masses), the iPod is the most convenient, portable way to watch them. I was out in Italy when I had the episodes on my iPod. Otherwise, I've got my HDTV at home. I couldn't exactly drag the TV, my desktop computer or an AppleTV over to Europe just for 2 weeks, you know?
So for that small of a screen, it kind of sucks. I'm not shelling out that much for TV on the go, when I can just TiVo it and wait til I have time to watch on a much nicer screen. Or, if I really want them on my iPod, rip the DVDs and transfer them to the iPod. Does that make me a pirate? |

It doesn't really matter anyway, because according to some. the iPod and iTunes are going to be dead and obsolete soon:
Music Business Pioneer Says IPod Will Soon Be Obsolete
LOL! Some people are really far out, aren't they! I don't see it happening. I rather OWN my music or content rather THAN rent it.
Every major company wants to drive us towards the "renting" model of everything. I hate that model.
I like,
owning my music,
owning my movies,
owning my TV shows I watch over and over,
owning my books,
owning my car,
owning my house,
owning my TiVo and Cablecard,
owning Operating System (especially if it's open source)...
etc, etc, etc, etc, ....
When will these greedy bast..... realize this? |

Amen! I think Rubin is just vocalizing the internal wishes of all the greedy music bigshots. Frankly, a lot of them are "losing" money through Apple, thus the slow rebellion that's taking place. They hate that Apple is as huge as it is, because it means they won't get back to their money-stealing ways anytime soon. I figure if these CEOs and overpaid producers would just start adjusting to the fact that they don't need to drive a different Bentley every day of the week, they'd probably be a lot less bitter. |

To be honest? This is really starting to remind me of the big stink that Pearl Jam got into with Ticketmaster over their prices for concerts. That, and Metallica and Napster, and keep going..
It's one thing when it's actually taking cash from the artist and creator, but just to line extra cash into a corporate executive whos main definition of art is how much it will cost, and how it will look in his penthouse apartment suite.. That's something I really can't condone.
Now, I'm all for paying for a priviledge, especially if it's something that is interesting to me. However, I'm not willing to pay that license, plus pay a royalty to the company, and a fee to the attorney, and a tax on the sale, and some kind of installment to the internet company that's allowing me the opportunity to try and see something that I don't have access to yet! That's like paying the cow for the steaks that I buy at the supermarket!
I think I'm done with my rant here, but to be honest, someone's usually got some kind of fleecing scam of some sort that is in the works on the internet, and until we can get some semblance of security online, I really don't see it stopping anytime soon. |

Did I also mention that NBC is stupid? Ok, so they don't sign with iTunes, THE PREFERRED source for music and video downloads and instead go with Amazon for what price per episode you ask?
$1.99
Hello? Any brain power over there at 30 Rock? Hello, hello? That was the whole point?
My Italian friend will use his classic "Idioty" phrase for people like this.... Read all about it here:
NBC reaches Amazon TV deal after iTunes break
Of course my TiVo can download Amazon shows now, but that is not the point, is it? |
