I don't think Jessica started out that way. From the way Niki described her, she was a sweet, talented person. I'm saying that she rode along for years seeing the world through someone else's eyes, brooding over her circumstance and the cruel past that placed her there. She gradually got more and more pissed off, and more and more willful to change her current situation. So, yes, I suppose she did lie dormant for many years, until figuring out that she could take control of Niki's body and leave her in the 'back seat', first for short periods of time, then for longer periods as she gained more familiarity/control. Now that she can live a life again the slightly mad Jessica has done a 180 personality-wise. Where she was meek before, now she is in-your-face. She might even blame Niki for her death, hence the goading and such.
I'm assuming that the beating she's referring to taking in place of Nikki were the ones that their dad inflicted on them while he was in a drunken rage. Those would be the beatings that caused him to kill Jessica eventually.
I also agree with Stoney about the brooding. Somewhere in the recesses of Nikki's mind, Jessica was able to see what was going on around her, even if she wasn't able to physically touch, hear, or interact with that reality. Growing more frustrated and forlorn, the mind twisted her thoughts back to those times when she was being beaten for no real reason than the fact that her father was angry with something, and had to take it out on her. Thus, the anger festered, grew into hate, spite, malice, and distain. When she figured out that she could start to control Nikki's body, it was small steps at first.. Maybe Nikki began to sleepwalk during the night, only it was Jessica trying out new things. Then progression finally came about, and Jessica was able to take control and toss Nikki into the backseat. Now Nikki's learning the same tricks, but she's having to learn them all at a faster pace, mainly because she's needing to control the monster that has control of her life. When she was somewhat aware of a problem, how long had Jessica been learning how to "break out" of that mental prison she'd been consigned to?
I'd have to say that Astral Projection comes the closest to explaining this behavior, because according to some older texts I've read, when the physical body is killed while the projector is out of body, that soul then becomes trapped. Thus my theory is that while taking another beating for her sister, Jessica went to her "happy place" inside her sister to watch the beating.. only, she dies, and is trapped in her sister's body with Nikki unaware that she's got a hitch hiker in her mind.
Indeed, Jorm. Niki is having to "beat the curve", so to speak, and learn what took Jessica years to learn in a matter of weeks/months. At this point, it's a battle of wills. Jessica figures she took Niki's beatings, in fact took her place in death, and that she deserves the use of Niki's body. Naturally Niki resents this, mostly because Jessica is sleeping with her man, and possibly adversely affecting her son. The relationship between Jessica and Micah sort of confuses me. I think there is some twisted affection there, even an instinctively protective leaning. Then we have the incident when Jessica hurt Micah, at the cabin he and D.L. had run to in trying to escape from Jessica. I couldn't really tell if that bothered Jessica or not. Then the last time we see her and Micah interacting, she's telling him he doesn't need to got school, that they can't teach him anything he doesn't already know. What happened to Micah being able to tell them apart? He's either slipping, or Jessica is becoming a better actress, or both.
I think it's actually the other way around. I think Micha's playing along with Jessica and humoring her. He can still tell who is in control, but he's not mentioning anything right now because Jessica is the more dominant entity right now, and he's waiting for the right time for Nikki to come back so that he can be back to his "normal" life once again. Now as for DL, I don't know if he's able to determine what's going on, as long as the family looks like it's together, I guess he's blissfully ignorant of the rest. He does pretend to act concerned, butto be honest, he's fairly lacksidaisical about the whole thing, and doesn't really seem to care much about what's going on outside of their little family world. Since we haven't seen much of Micah and DL since the whole Jessica working for Linderman theme, I don't know how much more they're going to show of the modern Heroes dysfunctional family. We'll have to wait and see on that one..
DL never seemed to take Jessica's existence very seriously. I think he would do something about it if he thought Niki was Jessica right now, because he knows she might be dangerous. But he should notice Niki's change in behavior. Maybe he attributes that to her time in prison.
He may not know whether it's Niki or Jessica working for Linderman, even if he believes Niki about Jessica being a separate personality.
And even if he knows, what could he do? The only thing I can think of is running with Micah again.
It has always seemed to me that Jessica is a really separate entity sharing Niki's body, and not a split personality created unconsciously by Niki to protect herself. Now that we know Jessica was also the name of Niki's sister, my impression is that the situation is something like possession, and that Jessica did not die, but stayed behind sharing Niki's body.
Jessica seems to have fewer moral restrictions than Niki, or acts on her passions more. Jessica is much more of an "ends justifies the means" kind of gal and has ended up doing wrong. Her secret life of crime has put her in bad situations such as the battle with DL or having to kill to protect herself (her life or her other crimes).
The simplest solution is usually the best. The simplest solution is that due to observing all the abuse done to Jessica and being unable to save her when she was young - and possibly being abused herself - Nikki developed a split personality. Her normal "weak" self and the stronger, more self-assured Jessica...who does all the things that Nikki wants to do or might daydream about. The reason Nikki can't use her powers as "herself" is the same reason Hiro's power has been on the fritz, Isaac originally needed drugs to see the future and that Peter was originally only able to use his borrowed powers around those he got them from: It's all about psychological limitations brought about by mental problems, self-image issues, drug dependencies, etc...
I posted this in the other Nikki post in this forum... before seeing this one, take a look
Quote:
I dont believe that Nikki has a power PER SE
Jessica, when she was alive, protected her sister from their father. She took all the yelling, screaming abuse, and possibly even rape, to keep her sister safe. In the end, her father choked her to death. Jessica died before she could show her power.
But in death, instead of crossing over, instead of staying down, her powers revealed themselves. Strength... Dont think on one level here, she has physical strength, but inorder to protect her sister still, she has strength of Spirit, and is able to possess Nikki
I realize that allot of you might flame me for this theory, but if you think about it its very possible, but then again... what isnt in this series?

I agree that multiple personality is the simplest and most reasonable explanation. It just doesn't feel quite right to me. Maybe Niki's experience of Jessica being a separate entity dominates my impressions.
Of course, looking at my own previous statements on Niki/Jessica in light of the new evidence, I can now say that
the third aspect of Niki that we will see will be as a result of the healthy merging and resolution of the Niki and Jessica personalities....she's gonna be cured of her multiple
personality disorder.
Obviously, it's just a theory....but it's mine....I'm backing it all the way!
I'm just going to be the old fart, and argue that it's supernatural posession, and that you're all wrong!
Anyway, I just finished watching my Dresden Files, and since I like the magic twists in their plots, and since Slippy has announced on quite a few occasions that magical means explain some of these powers better than real life explanations, I'm sticking with my theory of a trapped Astral Projection of her dead sister.
Disagree all you want Slippy, you have said it yourself that magic works!
