its not particularly in-depth, and i dont know if anyone else already stated this, but my theory is that the "S" like symbol is simply used to mark someone with abilities by whatever organization claire's dad is part of.

these are all the instances of the mark that i can think of that ive seen, the mark is on every photo of suspected mutants, nikki has it as a tatoo (it may or may not have been willingly put there), and the black guy with claire's dad wears it as a necklace.
