Posted: Tue Nov 07, 2006 6:06 pm Post subject: My personal theory(ies) on the nature of "super powers&
I believe that all of the paranormal abilities demonstrated by the "Heroes" so far actually are a singular ability tied directly into the various geographies of the human psyche which is why the expression of this singular trait appears so varied, ie. accelerated cellular regeneration does not APPEAR to have much in common with receptive telepathy. In a sense Claire's ability to heal so rapidly MIGHT stem from feelings of abandonment & hurt (no matter how much love she feels for or is given by her adoptive family) & the desire to not ever be hurt again expressing itself in what she sees as near-indestructibility. This could also partially explain why foreign matter lodged in her central nervous system would prevent signals/hormones/enzymes etc. from being directed/produced until such foreign matter was removed.
(On a side note: I believe that this limitation (and others, such as heroin use to stimulate precognition) is a repressive, self-limiting factor & not systemic.--more on this later)
Chris' receptive telepathy could very easily interpreted as expression due to a need to communicate with his wife/co-workers etc. (until more is known on the history
along the same lines---Peter is a Mimic because he has always wanted to copy his big brother. Nathan can fly because his parents always expected him to "soar" in his career and taught him to strive for success. Niki has a strong decisive alter-ego, because she herself is weak and indecisive. DL can phase because he has been hiding his whole life. Micah can fix things to amuse himself, because neither of his parents has spent quality time with him. Isaac never cared about the future, he just wanted to be high in the present, so his power is a little ironic. Maybe BH man grew up someplace cold and always wanted to be warm. I don't know that any of this has any merit, but it was a fun exercise.
Haha. Thanks Byd. I enjoyed your views on BH. If that was true I'd be a pyro right now. From Texas, but going to college up north. brrr.
I like the idea, and it fits with evolution and specifically with teology. If there is a need (in this case it is personal rather than populations) the body in this generation of people has learned to mutate and make up for it.
Forgot one- Sylar has an unquinchable need for brains (zombies anyone) and has developed the ability to hunt, kill and cannabalize people. The power this theory has in the hands of the mentally unstabble.
Oh and also Peter not only wants to be like his brother, but he has a need to be empathetic to others, whether because of his line of work, his people skills, or his dependence on human contact.
I believe that Peter "knows" he is destined for something "more", yet doesn't know what it is. His conscious mind believes that his power is flight, but he is now beginning to think that he has "other" powers. My (complete) theory will show that this is a mistake & that ALL of the heroes have the same ability & the separate manifestations are merely due to the personal mental/psychological limitations of the constituent subjects.
(IRL: I hope that I am able to enter the complete theory before more information is released in the show, making my work redundant; but the limitations of my SAD (Speech Assist Device) make this task onerous at the best of times )
The point mentioned aboot if this theory is true in the hands of a non-limited or what we would generally term insane minds ARE staggering (frightening).
The radioactive man feels distant from his wife (even before she is hospitalized) and probably everyone else too. He feels distant so his mind creates a physical reason to be distant.
Wooooow..that actually makes pretty good sense. So voodoo man can clean or read minds becuase he cant talk. DL can go through walls becuase he is a theif, and micha can fix things becuase he is the glue for his family.
I guess more WON'T be edited in later since, even though I'm the originator, I can't edit my post.
Sorry, the board's setup to only allow editing for one hour after original post. That's a necessary annoyance put on everyone to protect the board from the potential obnoxious few. It would be cool if you would continue to update the thread though.
I can readily agree with this theory. Can you adapt it to a sudden emergence of these abilities six months ago as well as special conditions needed to bring the abilities out for some people?
For instance, Radiation Guy brings out his power with anger as does D.L.. Hiro needs to concentrate, Peter needs proximity, and Isaac needs Heroin maybe (but a key clue there may be that Peter does not while in proximity).
Are there familial connections in the ability to manifest these abilities (if it is connected to emotion, it would be spread out randomly worldwide), and is it even inherited?
Seeming familial connections can also be explained by proximity. So far we have Peter and Nathan Petrelli, Niki/Jessica, D.L., and Micah, and Claire and her parents.
How can there be a Patient Zero? Aren't Patient Zero's only valid in cases of outbreaks? Why the cluster of Heroes in the US? The US makes up just 5% of the world population but seems to have something like 30% of the worlds Heroes if not more. Is it because it is easier to find the Heroes in the US, or because they are easier to create in the US? Why did Chandra Suresh choose NYC to come to to start his search when his interest really started in Madras, India with his daughter?
Part of the theory is that the various "triggers" are psychological in nature. I am also working on a theory that perhaps Expressives have a much larger percentage chance to initialize a manifestation when exposed to another Expressive.
P.S.
Of course, trying to duplicate laboratory controls using computer models of FICTIONAL characters makes this entire exercise pure speculation.
