Matt possesses telepathy, though it seems to be one-sided and outside of his control. Often, he will begin to hear thoughts that are not his own, but be unable to cease receiving them. As he told Audrey Hanson, he cannot activate it at will, though he has been receiving more thoughts more often as of late. It is likely activated by the clear thoughts of others; thus, the time and amount depends on the "sender(s)" rather than himself. Still, he was able to pull the name "Claire" from the mind of Mr. Bennet, despite being blocked by his associate, which Mr. Bennet considered a sign that Matt's powers are growing. Currently, the biggest problem of the power is his inability to stop receiving at will, allowing for a whole room of thoughts to bombard him. He is unable to send messages to others or use his abilities over any significant range. In general, he only seems able to hear thoughts from those in his immediate vicinity.

Does this mean If you dont think clearly that he cant read clearly? Also Eden's persuasion voice dosent work very weel on matt even though he went back to his car It was with reluctancy... sylar was reluctant when she told him to sleep so the hatian had to do It. Is this because she's not that good at affecting those who have high powered minds (Sylar's TK and Matt's TP) or does she just suck?

From "Fight or Flight" I learned more and have begun to theorize all possibilities for Parkman's ability.
Obviously he can read minds, but from what Maury said "mind reading is only the beginning", what Maury can do and when Parkman projected thoughts to Nathan THRU all the nightmare stuff, I think it's safe to say Parkman has officially stepped into the realm of BAD ASS MOFO!
My first instinct was to think Jean Grey. Is he a telepath that can hear thoughts, project thoughts or is it even stronger?
The reason I created this forum is so we can discuss Parkman's power possibilities over the next handful of weeks. I mean as of now it's ALL mental but what if his telepathy leads to telechenesis? He could start moving things with his mind or creating illusions like his father. Think about Jean Grey at the beginning-- She could hear thoughts everywhere, eventually learned she could communicate without words and later found out she could pick up cars just by thinking about it.
If Matt can get down like that, we may have a new "elder" of the newer generation of heroes. The man with a quality morale compass but the history to cloud his judgement. That is a great dynamic for any character, especially one with great mental abilities. stuff, Parkman could end up learning how to look so deep into people's minds that he could help them understand, hone and utilize their powers to their maximum potential!
He may be able to dig into Peter's head deep enough to let him know everything he forgot. Maybe Parkman could even tell Peter of the abilities he's unaware of. I mean if you think about it, Peter can absorb a power simply by being near it... He could have endless powers? Freezing, fire, super speed, shapeshifter! I'm getting a little overzealous. Let me know what you think.
Matt's dad lied - he can't read minds. He can manipulate dreams/hallucinations.
I don't think Matt will have the abilities his dad does. Matt's powers ARE broader than just reading minds. He can project thoughts as we have been shown.

Yeah but you have to start from the base of the idea and work up.
-Both Matt and Maury have MENTAL abilities.
-Nathan says to Matt "read his mind and lets get out of here" Then Maury got all wide-eyed and asked "you can read minds?" Now this is the reason I don't think Maury is lying about the mind thing--- He told Matt to read his mind but Matt couldn't and Matt finally winced and Maury said "hurts doesn't it?" So whether or not Maury has the ability he is aware of the effects of being blocked mentally... Being a conman it could just be using Matt's emotions mixed with his knowledge of the power to gain Matt's confidence--- so you have me on that point.
-But then Maury said "reading minds is just the beginning" And although he sent Matt and Nathan into nightmares Matt ultimately developed his power to the point where he PROJECTED thoughts instead of just hearing thoughts. And Nathan heard Matt because he asked "how'd you do that?"
-Since Maury said "reading minds is just the beginning" and Matt just so happened to develop another branch of his power in that scene I think it's safe to say that Matt's powers will continue to develop.
Now did the exposure to Maury's power help him find that extra ability? Was the nightmare hitting him so deep mentally that he realized the new ability? Did dad secretly help Matt do that? Maybe he felt bad about being a turd to his son and he tried to give him a consolation (doubt he felt bad but you never know).
This was my favorite part of the show. My girlfriend glared at me when I cheered after he projected his thoughts to Nathan! lol... silly girls
At this point we have to be ready to see some MAJOR character development not only with Matt but with others.
When Matt tried to read Maury's mind, the sound & special effects were similar to when Matt tried to read Peter's mind, sort of like a feedback loop.
So Matt's & Maury's powers seem to be fairly similar.
Although I seem to remember that the Haitian has a similar feedback effect to Matt's mind reading as well.....so I wonder what would happen if the Haitian goes against Maury?
I don't know if Matt's power is the same as his dad's, but heroesaddict, I believe the quotes you mention enlightened some part of Matt to the fact that maybe his power could do more than just hear thoughts, that and sheer determination enabled him to break out of the nightmare, AND broadcast his voice into Nathan's nightmare.
I would suggest that Matt and his Dad's powers are similar, but based around different senses - Matt's is based around the auditory parts of the brain, while Maury's is centered in the visual cortex.
heh, Matt just got a "power-up" to full telepath. I wonder what else he can do?
Incidentally, mind-reading only works if the subject isn't lying to themselves!
Oh, and I wonder if alternate-future Matt could broadcast?
[Edit]
Stopman - I think the Haitian's power trumps all abilities whose control (or function) has a mental component. It's like a dampening field, and I don't think even Maury could work his magic with the Haitian in range.
I find it interesting that while most abilities with a "remote" component are limited to the magic 20ft (approx) range, Molly's and Maury's aren't. They can work across the distance between Philadelphia and Brooklyn.

Perhaps it's just Molly's power that has the distance component. Maury just needs to be "close enough" to enact his powers on you. And Molly put herself "close enough" trying to locate him.
Otherwise he could have just put Matt & Nathan into their nightmare scenes when they knocked on the door.

I don't think the haitian can't stop powers automatically. As Seen in one of the very earlier episodes Nathan flew away from the comapanies base while the haitian was present. So I think he actually has to actually be forcing their powers to fail. Unless he was chasing after matt's father he wouldn't be able to know what was coming. Even if he is a little hefty, he sure can get outta there in a hurry.
