Maybe it's physical contact
that's necessary for him to dampen powers,
whereas proximity is all that's neede to mimic them. |

Great info, but 
I too was a little disappointed, I wanted to know more about why saving Claire saves the world. I know this show likes to hold on to its secrets, but some kind of little hint would have been nice. |
