| I have thought that his sword may be some sort of an Anchor of types that will help him with his jumps, similair to a talisman. |

| Whatever the purpose of the sword, it's important to remember that Masi Oka is a really good swordman in real life. It's pretty much a given that we'll see him use it on the show. |

Über-spoiler follows!!!
It has been suggested that Issac's most recent painting of Hiro battling a dinosaur with a sword is in reference to a future episode that will take place in a museum (NY's Museum of Natural History, perhaps?). In it, Hiro will supposedly face-off against Sylar. He will take the katana off a display case and brandish it against Sylar, who will attempt to use a Tyrannosaurus exhibit as cover. So yes, we will soon be seeing Hiro actually using his sword!!!

| I love some of your ideas, but let us not forget Hiro's heritage. He is Japanese, and Katana are VERY special in Japanese culture. The Samurai lasted a lot longer than Knights (the closest western equivalent). Hiro sees himself as a hero, therefore lives by bushido and considers himself a modern samurai. NO weapon symbolizes this idea better than a Katana. This I believe is why Hiro would chose tho carry such a weapon. |

Haha, I was RIGHT!!! As I suspected, the symbol is indeed a power-boosting talisman (or, at least, the katana that has it inscribed on its hilt is). And it isn't actually an RNA helix like we've all come to believe...it is in fact two Japanese characters combined, one that means "Great talent" and another that means "Godsend"!

Well there is this really cool ninja move (that you've probably seen in a lot of action or samurai movies) called "Tate" (pronounced "tah-tay"), where the ninja shows up, slice everybody in milliseconds, time stops for a second, and then they all fall down at once, right when the ninja-dude sheathes his sword.
And I can TOTALLY see Hiro wanting to try that. His power is perfect for all kinds of dorky Matrix-esque sword effects. But it would be interesting if the sword wasn't really a "sword" as some have speculated. |

Wasn't it Sigmund Frued who said sometimes a sword is just a sword? |
