I know we are led to believe that he is all serious and such in the future, but I have a feeling that is just him trying to act how he thinks a superhero should act. In person, I bet he's the same old Hiro. (They can't change him too much, people love him.)
I read somewhere along the lines that this Hiro is from the distant future. Anyone have an idea what the current timeline has been for the episodes air'd already? 1-2 weeks?
I think it'll be used for the same reason that Kung-Fu is used in The Matrix, audience aesthetics.
Unless there is a seriously powerful power-leech in Hiro's future he would never need the sword. Manipulating SPACE-time would be enough to get any effect that could be produced with a sword (except looking "uber-cool").
I still have a feeling that FutureHiro is a much more distant future than most people think. Alot of people are saying they think he simply used his timetravel to learn perfect english and to learn swordplay. Personally, there was just this feel to the character that I got that just didn't fit. It seems as though he is obviously affected by a much more serious mood, possibly the aftermath of the "bomb" going off. A theory I've heard and personally see being possible, is that the he came back and provided this message not to save the world from a bomb (because even if that bomb does go off, it doesn't extinguish the world, simply NYC) but to save the world from a future trouble. I think if he came back and told him to save the Cheerleader, it's because in the point of time he is returning from, they have realized that the cheerleader from the past, one that was named Claire, is what they need to be able to save the world of tomorrow.
I won't be suprised if the season finale cuts out right after the bomb goes off in NYC even though we are lead to believe it won't happen.
Exactly close to my thoughts Roninjinn! I am thinking Future Hiro is trying to "do Over " something we have not seen, and that this is still possibly not the right solution to correcting or betering his particular future.

Then again, it's just a theory.
I agree completely with everything you've said! I think in Future Hiro's past, Claire just died, and then the heroes went up against an uber powerful enemy who pwned them all, and Scar-faced Peter was like: "stuff guys, I think having a person who can regenerate would be nice right about now.... Hiro, go back in time and tell me to save someone like that!"
A post apocalyptic future with katana wielding time-travelers. I like it. I actually do want to have a big twist happen like that where saving "the world" doesn't mean from a bomb in NYC.

As much as I hate to say it (cause I really like the idea of a time traveling, sword wielding bad-ass), there is another option too....
Predestination/ontological paradox. Claire is saved, and at some point in the future, Peter or Hiro will remember that Hiro went back in time to warn Peter that she needed to be saved.
Maybe its a gift from charlie sometime before she died when he went back I mean come on he was with her for 6 months he had to learn some stuff and bedcome close to her.
