i agree. i would think he would be able to at least communicate some decent message across to leave on the answering machine for whats his name to recieve with how well he was speaking in the diner.

Yes, that maybe true, but then where's the fun in that? They (the writers) needed a reason for him not to anwser any Hiro's calls... ^_^ but it works out in the end... I'm so excited for the next episode... :3 I want to see how many of the 'Heros' cross paths with one and other...
