How can Hiro read the english comic book and understand it if he cant speak english? Did they make it clear he can read it? Seems odd to me.

Even though many Japanese cannot speak English, they are taught to read it and also use it in much of their culture. I'm not an expert on this though - anyone else know more than I?

It seemed to me like he did know how to read it but maybe he was just looking at the pictures. Sometimes very descriptive pictures can tell you what is going on without having to read. I am not sure though.

It's a lot easier to learn to get the gist of a written foreign language, especially when there's pictures to show the context, than it is to learn to speak it.

Correct most know reasonable english by high shcool age. While in the show, they really don't have him saying..."look i just said that, and look what you're going to say!" he mainly said "look!"

So i'd take it as he just means the pictures, but has simple understanding of some englich words.

Well you got to remember that when he came back from the future, and he was in the office with Ando showing him the coming book. He did say "Look" But he also said "How did I know that you were going to say that?" So he can obviously read the english book. He can say some english words so I assume that he can read english.

And, of course, the "how could I know you were going to say that?" refers to a line about sake, which is a word that most Japanese people would probably recognise even when written in English. yeah

Then again last night he was very disappointed to learn that the owner's manual of the rental car was all in English.

On a side note in episode five i was totally blown away by how the actor playing hiro was able to switch between cool hiro and nerdy newbie hiro. I cant believe how well cast this show is. I feel like i have a special treat i shouldnt be having since most tv shows suck balls. Very Happy....the tennis type of balls i mean of course!

He must not know how to read english since he couldn't read the car manual. I think he was just looking at the pictures in the comic book for sure now.

Yep, he could probably recognize the word "sake" written and point out to Ando that it was what he just said, and he can obviously read enough English to ask the rental agent for "Nissan Versa, Nissan Versa!" by name, but not enough to interpret a whole instruction manual written in English.

hasn't anyone taken high school forien language? I remember 1/4 of my words from first year spansih. I even remember how to congigate them. And then there's spoken slang english and proper english. One is easier to understand than the other.

As for Hiro. I believe english is a required subject in japanese school. A simple comic book should be easy to read and understand. (Spoken english) But then there was the car manual. Proper english and not slangy. A bit more difficult to read and understand. fluffy

my guess is that its 'supposed' to be in japanese but its an error in..er... damnit, i cant remember the word used. you keep it by not having costumes/items move/change between shots.

its mainly so the audience can read it.

if it was in japanese and they 'subtitled' the katakana and romaji, would it kinda be a wasted effort.
