Firing up the thread to discuss "Kindred." Episode summary written by "Squeaker:"
SUMMARY: Episode #3; Kindred
Ireland;
We kick off with Peter, once again – in yet another disgraceful flannel shirt. Ricky explains to him what he needs to do in order to get the box with his identity in it. They want him to help rob an armoured car as it takes the winnings from a local bookie. Peter agrees – their box for his box – but he then hears the thoughts of Will (the Irish lacky), saying he’s going to take the cash and he’d kill Ricky&Co for it. Peter doesn’t realise he’s hearing thoughts; he thinks Will merely muttered the words. He confronts Will, and tries to warn Ricky, but they both pounce on him. Ricky tells Peter that he trusts in his ‘Brother’ more than he trusts in some guy he doesn’t know (and who doesn’t even know themself).
Mexico;
We cut to Maya and Alejandro. Alej tries to steal a car to help them on their way to America. But the policeman - who they didn’t notice sitting 10m away from them, in broad daylight - spots them and gives chase. Alej manages to get Maya over a fence to safety but gets caught. He tells Maya to run.
Las Vegas;
Niki and Micah are sitting together in her car. She says they have to leave Las Vegas, but Micah doesn’t want to go without his father. Niki says whenever he wants to see his father she will make sure he can. Together they walk into the graveyard where DL’s grave rests. They say goodbye.
In a Tropical Paradise;
A beautiful redhead is answering her phone, she tells the person on the other end that ‘he is still sleeping.’ She hangs up and turns around just as Sylar wakes up. He seems weakened and asks where they are and who she is. She introduces herself as Michelle, and explains that she was formerly known as Candice, but after rescuing him from the Plaza (in HTSAEM) she had to change her identity. She tells him to be careful because he still has stitches from the 8 operations he’s had since being stabbed by Hiro. She then explains to him that she makes illusions and none of what he’s seeing is real. He demands to see the truth, and the surroundings dissolve into a sorry looking excuse for a medical ward. He tries to sit up but pulls his stitches and cries out in pain.
Space – The Final Frontier;
The Planet Earth slowly drifts into alignment. It slips directly in front of the sun, causing an astronomical eclipse of biblical proportions...
Then! As if form nowhere! Massive white letters, each the size of the moon, appear as if from nowhere, threatening to...
...oh wait, that bit’s not important.
Bennet Household;
Claire is reading Chandra’s book. HRG enters her room and apologises for being so harsh on her the other day when all she wanted was answers. He said he understands how hard it is when he asks her to keep such a big secret. Claire asks him what would happen if someone (for example, a creepy little pubescent stalker named West) were to learn her secret. HRG explains to her that they would have to move again, and possibly forgo things like work and school altogether.
Claire’s School;
Claire tries to convince West that she was just giving herself a pedicure. He sarcastically concedes to believe her story, and that the whole toe coming off and re-growing thing was perfectly normal. He warns her not to do her nails on the way to class.
Brooklyn;
Matt wakes up to the sound of someone in the kitchen. He draws his gun and sneaks in to find Mohinder making a cup of tea/coffee/air. Mo informs him he’ll be working from the City from now on. Matt complains that he’s going to bring his spying game into their home. He warns Mo that he’s in over his head, and Matt hasn’t got the time to baby-sit him as well as Molly. Molly runs into the kitchen and cuddles Mohinder, clearly happy to see him, which ends the debate.
Present Japan;
Ando is playing computer games at work. He gets caught and grilled by his manager. (If you desperately need a laugh at this point; don’t read the subtitles, just watch this guy’s face). When the angry shouting man leaves, Ando sneaks Hiro’s sword out of a draw and holds it fondly, saying he hopes Hiro is doing better than he is. He finds a note on the handle of the sword saying ‘Ando, open.’ Shocked, he manages to open the sword and finds several rolled up parchments inside. Hiro’s been stashing them there in the past, for Ando to find in the present. They read a bit like a postcard, in which Hiro tells Ando where he is and what he’s doing.
Ancient Japan;
Kensei gets up after his brief brush with death and Hiro helps him by pulling out the arrows that are still stuck in his chest. Hiro tries to explain to him that he has a power, but Kensei thinks Hiro cursed him. He rides away, yelling to Hiro that he is a Devil.
Ireland;
Peter is auditioning for Dragonball Z; holding out his hands and yelling the names of the abilities he wants to perform. Alas, to no avail. Caitlyn is sympathetic that he’s struggling, and Peter explains to her that he doesn’t know how to make his powers work, and that he feels powerless. She jokingly suggests that he might be an alien, escaped from a government facility. That seems to cheer him up. He puts on the ugly red flannel shirt again, and Caitlin demonstrates her fearless courage by not fleeing in horror. She says she’s excited to see him open that box, and that he shouldn’t worry about the heist tonight because she’ll look out for him. He asks how he can trust her and she points out that she kept his secret safe.
Mexico;
Alejandro is thrown into jail. He meets a charming young American student who politely informs him that he looks like a bottom! Alej says only that he doesn’t speak English.
Claire’s School;
West is being an ass; disrupting science class by asking the teacher -seriously- what would happen if a lizard mated with a human. Because he’s sure he’s seen a lizard girl. Claire gets angry and storms out.
Present Japan;
Ando is still reading the postcards-from-the-past. Hiro says it’s not going to be easy making Kensei into the hero of legend, and confesses that he’s fallen in love with Keiko – the most beautiful woman in Japan. He’s sad because history has already told that she must be the love of Kensei.
Ancient Japan;
Hiro is walking with Keiko, but then he sees Kensei and runs over to him. The charming young Englishdrunk is cutting himself to watch the wounds heal, clearly getting used to this new telent. Hiro says that he too has powers, and can bend time and space. Kensei understands at last that nothing can kill him and he gets excited at the prospect of using the gift to gain riches. Hiro tells him to forget money and that he must focus on defeating Whitebeard and the 90 Angry Ronin. Kensei says he can walk away if he pleases, because no one can stop him. Hiro puts a hand on his shoulder and teleports him to a temple where the Fire Scroll is guarded. The 90 Angry Ronin see them and begin charging down the steps. Hiro pretty much shoves Kensei through the gate to fight them all, then he vanishes. Poor bugger.
Claire’s School;
Stalker West finds Claire angry and upset. He forces her to admit that she’s different, and she does; she admits that she’s such a freak that she has to pretend to be a brainless Barbie. Otherwise people will discover her ability and she’ll be carted off to a human zoo, to be poked at and tested for the rest of her life. She cries, saying she’s tired of pretending to be someone she’s not.
West tells her to shut up (thankyou), then lifts her into his arms and shoots off into the sky. Claire is suddenly happy to discover that she’s not alone in her specialness, and together they fly over the town, giggling. It’s all rather sweet.
Ireland;
The crew is assembled at the back of the bookies. They wait for the couriers to summon the money out. Peter then walks up to the couriers and distracts them by demanding his $200 back (dollars in Ireland - bless, he’s so lost!). The rest of the gang then sneak up behind the couriers and subdue them. The bookie guard comes out with the moneybox – which the gang then swipe. Despite the rifles in his face, the brave man still presses the alarm, which brings out more guards. They charge out, guns blazing, but Peter stops them shooting anyone by throwing a truck at them. He seems careful not to actually crush people – and also seems shocked that he actually managed to call up a power. Only Caitlin sees this little bit of magic, since the rest of the lads are loading up the money. I’d like to take this moment to thank Ireland, as a country, for being so damned cold this time of year - thus forcing Peter to cover up that godawful shirt for this scene. Once the van is loaded up, Peter jumps into the cab and gently reminds Caitlyn to GO!
New York;
Mohinder walks into what was formerly Isaac’s loft. Bob explains that the company has turned it into Mo’s own private lab. He tells Mo that he is now a valued part of the family, and that the company will be keeping a supervisory eye on him – for his own good, of course.
Anceint Japan;
Keiko is worrying that Kensei is dead or hurt. Hiro says that the great Kensei will return and she questions his faith in him. She says that Kensei’s confuses her sometimes; that he seems almost like two different people from the way his character changes (she neglects to mention that his height also changes by about 8 inches).
Kensei returns – in one piece, and with the scroll. Keiko hugs and kisses him. Poor Hiro looks so sad.
New Orleans;
Niki takes Micah to DL’s Family, to stay while she goes away for a while. He doesn’t want her to go, but she explains that she ‘has to do this’. He reminds her that that’s what she always says before she does something bad. She says she loves him, then takes him up to the porch. Lieutenant Ohura opens the door. She’s obviously heard that Lieutenant Sulu is on earth somewhere, but possibly hasn’t realised that he is infact under it.
Mexico;
Maya tries to buy her brother out of jail, explaining that she is sick and needs him to get her to America. The police refuse to let him out and threaten to call in border control. Maya tells them that she and her brother are the murderers on their wanted poster. She does this so that the police try to grab her – which triggers her terrible ability. Her black tears take down the policemen, as well as the nice American student in the cell next to Alejandro. Maya unlocks the cells and Alejandro quickly absorbs all of her darkness before anyone dies. As they are leaving, the student tells them to take him with them, and that he has a car.
Ireland;
The lads celebrate over the big box of stolen money, but then Will draws his gun and tells them to hand it all over. Peter enters the room, and realises he’d been right, and Will congratulates him with two bullets to the chest. Caitlyn tries to go to Peter but Will orders her to stand still, then demands that they give him the money. He looks very much like he’s ready to kill them all.
Then suddenly he is ripped from his feet and pinned against the wall. Peter rises shakily to his feet, as the bullets slowly emerge from of his chest. He looks shocked and uncertain at first, but then becomes suddenly angry. He closes in on Will, still pinning him to the wall, and begins to strangle him with TK (Darth Vadar style).
Will chokes and gags, looking like he’s about to die – while Peter looks more than comfortable with what he is doing. His expression looks an awful lot like Sylar’s at this moment; the one-sided snarl; the cold intent gleam in his eyes.
Caitlyn turns around and screams “Peter!” He seems to immediately snap out of it. His expression returns to one of shock and confusion as he looks from her to the man he is choking. Then he finally (obediently, I’d say) drops him. Will scurries away, and though Peter looks a little innerved, he doesn’t look uncomfortable with the fact that he nearly killed him.
Ancient Japan;
Hiro tells Kensei that he’s well on the way to being a hero now, and that Hiro can go home to his own time. Kensei implores him not to go. He says that having Hiro around is like having a conscience – only he actually takes heed of him! Hiro explains that he might break history again by staying, and finally they part ways.
Hiro takes one last look at Keiko before he leaves, which changes his mind. Perhaps Kensei could do with his ‘conscience-carp’ around, just for a little longer.
No Idea Where;
Michelle has made Sylar some eggs, but he is miserable that he can’t even move a cup with his TK – all of his powers are gone. Michelle assures him that the people she works for will make him all better, and that she’ll help him get more powers. He’s sceptical about her ability, so she demonstrates her arts of illusion for him. Sylar changes his mind about her powers, deciding that they aren’t completely useless at all! He kills her and takes her brains for himself (Hurray!). But something is wrong – he can’t use her ability – just as he cannot use any of his own. Distressed, he flees the building, only to discover that he’s in the middle of a rainforest, somewhere...
Ireland;
Caitlyn is tattooing their clan logo on Peter’s arm (any excuse to get that damned shirt off), but he keeps squirming and gasping under the needle. She calls him a baby, and a pretty-boy (which he seems to like), then Ricky enters the room. He tells Peter that he’s one of them now, and thst there are no secrets among family. He hands over the box and leaves.
But Peter is afraid to open the box. He confesses to Caitlyn that he had genuinely wanted to kill the traitor Will, and that he’s afraid he was a bad person before losing his memory. Caitlyn points out that he didn’t actually kill Will, but Peter believes it’s only because she asked him not to. She insists that he stopped because he’s a good soul, but he doesn’t seem convinced. He’s still scared that what he finds in the box will be something terrible, and that he will discover he was a monster.
Caitlyn puts her hand on his and asks him if he is happy with where he is and who he is, here and now. He nods quietly, and the suggests that maybe –for now– he should just leave the box closed. Then she leans closer and kisses him.
The tattoo on Peter’s arm changes into the Godsend symbol, then completely vanishes into his skin.
On a Beach Somewhere...
Claire and West are sitting by the sea, each arguing that the other is cooler. Claire tells West that she does feel pain. They play-fight a little and then they kiss. Claire sees the two small puncture-marks on West’s neck. He fidgets uncomfortably, before he tells her that he was abducted two years ago. He lost a day of his memory, but he remembers the man who snatched him; a man wearing horn rimmed glasses.
New York.
Bob and Mo are in the new lab. Bob’s phone rings and he steps out to answer it. Niki is on the line, and she’s making a deal with him. He cures her, if she helps him. While Bob is out of the room, Mo calls HRG, telling him that he found some of the paintings. He sends him a picture of one of Isaacs 8 predictions. It is the last in the series; 8/8, and it shows HRG dead - shot through the eye, with a cheerleader kissing a boy in the background.
Claire is standing in the doorway, it’s clear that she saw or heard something of her father’s conversation with Mohinder, but it’s unclear exactly how much.

Another good episode in my opinion. Great to see Sylar back, too bad he had to whack Candace. So I guess DL didn't survive that gunshot wound?? Did we know that already or did I miss something over the summer? Good to see Niki and Micah though. I thought the scene with West and Claire where he reveals he can fly was kinda of corny. I'm wondering if he is going to be a wedge between her and her dad? Looks like that might be the case cause she knows he abducted West and did those tests on him. I'm surprised that HRG didn't recognize West when he just about hit Claire. Unless, West is lying about everything and it's a setup.
I've gotta say, I'm not happy about Peter becoming a shady criminal. And what was up with that tattoo turing into the Helix? Does that mean he has the same thing Niki had? A good side and a bad side? I hope the Maya and Alenjandro storyline starts to pick up because so far it's the same thing every week. Run, get into a confrontation, Maya does her thing and Alenjandro has to come to the rescue. I'm not sure what Hiro is going to try and accomplish by staying in the 1600's. I guess he has a huge crush on that girl and doesn't want to leave her yet. Ok that's all I can think of for now. I'm sure I'll remember some more later when others have posted!
I think the tattoo just changed to that before disappearing entirely. I thought it was rather odd that he was being tattooed in the first place, considering his healing power. I figure it was reinforcing the symbol that appears on the computer program, the tattoo Nikki has, the pendant the Hatian wears, the symbol on the calling cards, and any where else it appears.
That whole West was pretty odd. I thought the flying scene came straight out of Superman 1 with Christopher Reeve. I like the Peter parts of the episodes the most now, Hiro's scenes are starting to get a bit lame, imo. Sylar was rather foolish to kill Candice off so quickly but he doesn't appear to be the most patient individual out there. That power should really make him formidable now.
I enjoyed this one about as much as i enjoyed Lizards. Let's see where to begin.
@Candace/Michelle/Betty - how thick can you get? Trying to schmooze-up Sylar and expecting to come out alive, idiot. Makes me wonder though who she was working for and why they want to keep Sylar alive. It seems to me that if it were the paperco. they would just have kept him in TX. and continued to study him, not patched him all up and sent him to recover with Candace.
It seems like Claire is going to have a very complicated relationship. I guess West being abducted who explain his proficiency with his ability (thinking back to when Matt was abducted). I wonder if the company is still trying or able to track specials? I know Hana took down the one satellite, but are there more? That could be really bad for the Bennett's.
Peter - I don't like him joining up with a cliche gang of Irish criminals.... Not to mention all that hype over 'the box' only for him to get it and not open it. Talk about being a wuss over it...
Maya & Co. - still don't much care what happens with these 3 now. The America guy though, how handy was it for him to have a car right outside the jail? And did you notice it was a Nissan Rogue? I was hoping that since Claire had her Rogue stolen we wouldn't be seeing anymore of their stupid commercials...
Niki - it will be interesting to see what happens to her... I have a feeling Jessica might return to save her butt. And who was Micah staying with? Another Trekkie - Nichelle (Uhura)! Too bad for DL though, eh? Cant survive 1 shot to the gut, but ol' Matt takes several shots to the chest and is up and running....
Posted: Tue Oct 09, 2007 2:54 pm Post subject: ...It's picking up!
The story line of season 2 is finally picking up. They have me at the edge of my seat trying to piece bits together.
To start off, what's going on with Sylar? by the way they portrayed him you would think he was the one that was caught in the explosion. I mean i understand from the end of season 1 he was beaten to a pulp but i didn't think his injuries would be that bad. But then again he doesn't have Claire's abilities to regenerate so he can't exactly heal quickly. The lady that's helping him at the beginning says her name is Melissa or something along those lines, but after some dialog we come to realize that it's actually Candace. If memory serves me right in Season 1 Candace was being played by the always beautiful Missy Peregrym. Candace was involved with the company that HRG(Claire's father) was working with. So that rises some questions such as: Is she still working for the same the same company? if so? what do they want with Sylar? With the death of Lenderman, who has taken his role as leader of this company?
Sylar goes on to kill Candace but is unable to use her ability right away. In fact, we didn't see him use any ability during the assault. It's assumed that he pryed her head open like he was doing to Peter in season one, but when they open to the scene you see him picking glass out of her head. I think that was Kring's way to show that he opened her up with a cutting utencil. <-- **my opinion** And it was proven that Sylar cannot perform any of his abilities while injured.......That might be his "kryptonite" so to speak.
Claire has found someone that she can open up to and finally speak to about her abilities. As they start to open up to each other I think she realizes that he has some hostility towards HRG or Claire's father. It would be curious to see what happens next episode since HRG was forwarded the image of his death, and having Clair and that kid behind his cadaver.
Nikki and Micah were finally brought back into the story line. Much wasn't really shown except for DL is dead and she somehow is tied to the company that Mohinder is undercover in.
There seems to be some repetitiveness at the Isaac Mendez studio. When they went to the future, Hiro was using the studio to trace back the timeline. And now that company is setting up the studio for Mohinder to do his research. There's def some ties to that location......Wonder what they are!?!
Peter is slowly getting his abilities back as he is presented with situations in which he may need to use them. He was using Telekenesis and the Regeneration is this past episode and seems to be familiarizing himself with using it. Peter still doesn't know his past though. The irish guy gave him his box but Peter was reluctant to open it. He feels comfortable and somewhat needed in Ireland. Curious to see where this Storyline is going.
Maya.....the beautiful Dania Ramirez. Maya has an incredible power which brings death to those within a certain circumference of her. The crying of what appears to be dark blood has almost a stigmatic feel to it, which almost feels appropriate given her nationality. <--**NOT A STEREOTYPE I'M OF PUERTO RICAN DESCENT**!!...It's kinda hard to pin-point exactly what the power is though. Maybe her innocent anger gives off a cloud of poison that kills anyone in it's path?!?! and her brother is the antidote?!?! Hard to say....But it seems pretty cool!
Nathan is a bum! lol but judging from the previews of the next show, it looks like he's finally going to have some type of presence working with Matt Parkman.
The only thing I really have trouble forming an opinion about is the death of the "Original Heroes"! The guy that is killing them off is wearing a Jean Jacket and a Green Hoody. I can be wrong but I think I remember, And I would have to look back at this, seeing HRG's superior wearing the same outfit once or twice in Season 1. I believe his name is Claude. I dunno....Just a thought.
That's what I got! Please feel free to comment and let me know if any of my information is wrong!
I agree that the episode was good, but not the greatest. I dont know where the twins story is going but I hope they do something quick cause I am losing interest very fast! The Peter scenes were cool, and after watching it I thought it would be cool to see him as a bad guy, but not so early considering he was the "HERO" that we all pushed for in the first season. I'd like to kick West's teeth in......I think hes a JAG! BRING BACK NATHAN PLEASE!!!!!!!! I know Nissan sponsors the show but does everyone have to drive ROUGE in this show? I like where Hiro's story is heading, but I wish it would pick up a bit, or at least show Kensei obtain the Fire Scroll. Did it seem like the commercials were never ending last night? At least on the Chicago stations it did! Cant wait for next week!
Actually Matt, I didn't really look that closely, but you could be right.
My take is that this episode is setting us up for the "Big One" where the full scope of this season is headed. Sylar's going to figure into the mix for a little while, but the main goal of the cast is going to be put into motion after the next episode.
We're going to get some solid groups lined against each other:
First of all what's up with Sylar?
Candice/Michelle/Betty- I don't recall if she said he "lost" his powers or he just couldn't use them but she did say when he gets better he'll be able to "re-acquire" them. Wouldn't that mean he'd have to go out and get them again?
Also he knew her power was to alter reality but when he went to use it he just wanted to be alter his reality, by saying the city did he think he would teleport there or was he just looking to see what she could do? If he has the virus that's cool because he'll need help to cure it and that may very well change him to be a little less evil... Although I read in a spoiler that next week he gets some help and isn't very nice back.
As for Peter, I like the story because he's learning his powers but he seems so negative and it just doesn't fit his character. He's an optimist. Maybe that's why he's learning to control his powers better?
Hiro... Don't know what to think about that. Kensei is still a thief, I don't buy that he's a hero all of the sudden. Especially if he's indestructable, I'd assume he's immortal then, so what happens when his loved ones die that anchored him down? Resort back to his old ways. I like the story simply because we can sit here and watch all the stories of Kensei come true before our eyes.
ALSO- with the whole Nikki/Micah story, the writers/producers/actors have all been so ambiguous about D.L.'s future with the show and they show'd his gravestone but when Nikki is talking to... shoot. I don't recall who she was specifically talking to, but if you look in the background, it looked like D.L. standing up-- but he was like immobile. Is that his actual body? Is it a body double? Are they testing him? Shoot, my point sounds baseless without the name but go back and watch the episode and watch the background of each phone conversation and you'll see an African American body in the background......
As for West-- is he setting her Claire up to divulge her secrets or is this all true and West becomes the thing that can come between Claire and HRG? I'd figure if West had a problem with HRG, he could confront him and that would be dealt with, considering Noah is fighting against the people who run the company he worked for..... There is too much damn info to discuss! Six more days! I want to see some resolve!
I assume Maya and bro are in Claire's stolen car. The thief (and they) will probably return to the thief's home town, and presumably bump into Claire. Although maya and bro want to get to NYC, not the west coast, so who knows at this point...
Hi Sylar, welcome back.
Peter is a sap and somewhat stupid, as usual.
Two Men and A Baby, aka Molly, Matt and Mohinder seems silly. Where's Matt's wife and unborn son? Wouldn't Matt have mentioned something about Nathan, Angela, and the mysterious attacker to Mohinder?
Where is Haitian dude?
We saw a cameo of the new "special" girl, the rival cheerleader, sitting in front of Claire in class. Kinda hard to miss her since she's smokin' hawt.
Hiro....personally I think the writers stuck Hiro in the past because time travel is just too damn hard to develop a plot line around. Hiro takes action, trying to fix things. He can move instantly. If he were back in the Present, he could teleport all over and resolve plot lines in short order, which wouldn't let the writers drag the story out like they want to.
So I think they "stuck" Hiro in this Past plotline.
Peter is wishy washy, good personal flaw to have in the face of him being far and away the most powerful. Otherwise the show would fall off the deepend real quick with one character being so much more powerful than the others.
I was thinking Alejandro, Maya, Claire and West "teaming" up...
