LMAO, Action!! That'd be a hell of a defense mechanism: when threatened, just blow yourself up. When the danger is past, you literally "pull yourself back together".
That's what the Terminator in T2 did, though, inadvertently!!! When I read the post, I got that image in my head.
Question that just occurred to me: Why was Linderman in New York? He had all of Isaac's work, so he knew that there was supposed to be a nuclear explosion in front of his office building. You'd think that he'd have found a safer place. Moot point, I guess, because he's already dead. (Another question: how did D.L., bleeding in Nikki's arms, manage to get behind Linderman and stick his hand into the back of the head while Linderman talked to Nikki, all without Linderman noticing?)
Linderman was in NY to make sure his "fix" of the election went off without a hitch. He brought Candace and MIcah there to make sure that Nathan won by a landslide. Then, once that operation was done, he was getting them both, and preparing to leave by helicopter. He knew the explosion was going to happen, but he had things he had to wrap up before he could allow it to occur.
Next, about DL getting behind Linderman:
Once Linderman shot Dl, he fell sideways and to the floor. Linderman than stalked around Niki, and was taunting her. While focusing on Niki and doing his nice monologue, DL was able to get up and give the fatal blow to the mob lord.
Thus, you've got both explanations there.. (I hope)
Linderman was just so full of himself, I think he had completely dismissed DL, considering him "taken care of". He was focused on Niki because he still needed her, or at least, he needed Jessica. One must remember how crafty DL is, and how much he cares for/loves Niki, despite how badly her "Alter Ego" has screwed him over. He probably thought Niki to be in danger without Jessica.
He knew the explosion was going to happen, but he had things he had to wrap up before he could allow it to occur.
But how did he know when the explosion was going to occur? There was not much time between when he died and Peter went boom.

OK, I just watched it again, several times. Here's the sequence
38:44: Lindy shoots DL. DL falls to the floor next to Nikki.
38:47 Camera close up of Lindy. He takes one step forward.
38:48 Camera close up of Nikki looking stunned.
38:49 Camera close up of Lindy. Lindy says, "You should have taken the money"
38:52 Camera close up Nikki, still looking stunned.
38:54 Camera close up of Lindy. DL's hand goes through his head.
39:02 Camera pans out. DL and Nikki are now standing about 10 feet apart. Lindy is between them.
So there are exactly 10 seconds between Lindy shooting DL and DL hitting Lindy in the back of the head. Lindy has taken one step forward and uttered one sentence. There is absolutely no way that a guy could get off the floor and get behind Linderman without him noticing in that timeframe, even without a bullet in the stomach. Watch it again, and you'll see how ridiculous it is.
I could have sworn that DL fell to the side near the edge of the desk. and from what I remember Nikki stepped away from him a little. However, I've been wrong before!
As to Linderman knowing about the explosion, he was the one who had orchestrated the entire bomb scenario, so how could he not know about the explosion?
I don't think he knew exactly when it was going to happen, but he had to make sure that Nathan's fix was in before he left. And if that meant dying in the explosion, then so be it. I think Linderman saw the whole explosion as the redemption of the world, so I think he was willing to sacrifice even his own life to make sure that his plans were carried out to the last letter..
Now, I also think that the appearance of Nikki and DL was something unexpected to him. After all, Jessica had shown herself to be quite self-serving, and Linderman hadn't anticipated Jessica being willing to travel to NYC just to get Micah back. Just one more 'hiccup' in the carefully laid plans of a criminal mastermind....
Anyway, if the frame-by-frame is correct, then we just have to chalk up Linderman's death to bad scripting and cinematography..
Could DL have phased and rolled "through" Linderman's legs and stood up behind him? That would only have taken a few seconds. Being able to do it after having just been shot...well whatever. The point is that it's logistically possible.
Although I imagine Linderman would have noticed it, or at least he would have noticed Nikki's eyes flickering downward as SHE noticed it.
You say "only 10 seconds" . . . it sounds like a short time when you say it, but think of all you could do, how far you could move, in "only 10 seconds" . . . 10 seconds is a lifetime.
Heck, you'd think that Linderman would feel something if DL decided to phase through his legs as well. After all, you can see in the couple of times that we've seen DL phase that it also affects the physical object that he's been interacting with.
I mean, I'm sure he felt it when DL first phased his hand into his skull, and then his eyes bugged out when DL formed his hand back into something resembling 'normal' matter..
He absolutely felt it before he was . . . well . . . how 'bout "neutralized". The momentary expression of surprise on Linderman's face before he fell was priceless. Kudos to the incomparable Malcolm McDowell; may he return in many flashbacks . . .
anyone else notice when Hiro teleported to Kirby Plaza that at first we saw him from the back with his sword facing the screen, but it magically turned around when he went to stab Sylar
Ummm . . . Teleporting Japanese Man!! Hello!! No rule says he can only leap great distances . . . ((Of course, it probably was a mistake made in the cutting room)))
A poster on my forum asks: "How would you have ended it?" He has a couple of good suggestions. I wonder what other ideas people have: http://heroesdefects.com/forums/3/topics/19
