I'm posting this here since this is the off topic forum...and well, I don't think it gets any more off-topic than this.
So, next Friday, I'm going on vacation to Italy. Unfortunately, I'm being forced to fly Alitalia. Last time I flew Alitalia was in 2003. I was scarred for life by a rude flight attendant who told me my CD player and Game Boy weren't allowed on flight, even after takeoff (this happened about an hour after takeoff).
Now it's 2007, and I have my awesome iPod. I'm wondering if they've relaxed their rules and at least allow iPods. I've tried to find answers online, but I keep getting mixed answers.
Does anyone here know for sure if iPods are allowed on Alitalia flights? I want to go into the flight prepared, because last time I was stuck twiddling my thumbs for almost 9 hours straight. I couldn't even watch the inflight movie. We were seated right under the monitors.
If no one knows, I'll go ahead and call the company myself. But I trust all y'all more than a random customer service rep. I've had bad experiences with customer service. Oy. |

I've never flown them but I know what bad airline experiences are like. I decided to Google Alitalia and ipod just to see what I would get:
Link
I only glanced at the first few results - one person said "they would rather walk." So I know this isn't the firsthand experience feedback you were looking for, but at least it's something. |

Thanks SuperHiro.
Yeah, they're pretty darn awful. People complain about American "hospitality" all the time, and let me tell you....Alitalia makes them look positively angelic. The only reason we're taking Alitalia is because it's the only direct flight. We'd have to spend almost an entire day flying from airport to airport if we didn't.
I pretty much agree with what you sent me. If I could walk on water instead of take that flight, Lord knows I would.
Doesn't solve my iPod dilemma, but I figure I'll duke it out with the attendants if they give me any problems. And bring a big book in case I lose the battle.
Thanks again, I appreciate it. |

You could always deny that it's an Ipod, and just claim that it's a really large piece of gum..
Maybe they'll buy it, maybe they won't.. you take a chance either way.
I could never stand Aitalia flights. I had to be on two. Both were rather forgettable, and I'd really rather not remember the bad flights..
What was I talking about? |

| Have you thought about phoning the airline and ask them what their policies are regarding personal electronic equipment? |

That was my plan. But like I said, I've had bad experiences with customer service reps not having any idea what's really going on (much more now with all the policy changes because of the whole terrorism thing).
I figured I'd ask around here because well, frankly, I like all you guys much more than I'll ever like Alitalia. You're more trustworthy, too.

I've got one of the old school iPods (the first ones to come out in color...60GB) so it'd be a HUGE piece of gum. Now if I were a big dude, I might be able to pull it off (proportions and such). But I'm a small woman. 5'3" and barely weigh over 115 (160cm and 52kg for all the other people who don't get American units).
Somehow I don't think the flight attendants would buy that li'l ol' me could fit a piece of gum that big in my mouth.
I figure I might as well call. *sigh* |

I would go with the book. Or maybe a big book and a book of sudoku/crosswords/whatever floats your boat.
I bet if you threaten to sing they'll let you listen to the iPod instead. You probably don't even have to be a bad singer for that to work.
j/k You can get shaken down by airport security just for looking at them wrong these days. |

Oh, trust me. If I sing, I'll get charged with an act of terrorism. I'm bad.
Anyway, I need book recommendations. Any ideas? |

I'm going to build on Jorm's idea, only, instead of a "really large piece of gum" tell them it's a remote detonator, and that if they say anything more, no one will be making it to Italy.
You might even get a reception party from the security team when you land! |

I don't know if you've read them, but the books I read are Sci-Fi Fantasy Genre, and the series I've been reading with much interest lately are the Scions of Kushiel series.
It's a series set in ancient Europe, mainly around Gaul/France.
I think you'll like the storyline, and the descriptions of the areas will give you great imagination for your trip, as they also describe Italian countrysides and Spanish country as well..
Just a suggestion, however |

No kidding! Lol...though I don't think it's quite the reception party I'd like...unless cake was involved. Do security teams give out cake? |

Actually, recently, a very good book came back into my attention because of the main character's name:
Snow Crash
The main character is called "Hiro Protagonist" of course, he's a sword carrying, pizza delivery man.
I highly recommend this book for your flight, and I bet you can even finish it before you get there! |
