all characters have potential, I'll hold out until the first few episodes of the season to judge Maya. She was not a bad character so much as she was stuck in a time-loop of doing the same thing EVERY episode. (and GN). And she was no more naive than Peter, if people can like that guy, then they can like Maya.
True. I do hate having characters who are fairly static. With Peter, you never know what he's going to do next, because the boy has no backbone, and a TON of powers to choose from, so there's no telling what he's going to do.
Nathan is also fairly tough to read. One time you think he's going to be the shark-like politician, and he ends up being a decent brother. Or you think he's going to snub someone, and actually behaves like a nice guy..
Angela has been an enigma since we first met her, so she's always interesting..
However, characters like Simone, Maya, West, and The Haitian are characters that I can deal with, or honestly see leave, and not have any problems with the show.
For Simone, it was the whole "damsel in distress" thing. Each time you saw her, she was in some kind of trouble, and she needed that desperate help. Give me a break. Learn to deal with some problems, and get on with your adult life! I'm kind of glad she's gone.
Now we have Maya, and she's the same way. Running from problems, refusing to stand up for herself, and if she gets in trouble, or has to face her fear, she uses her power, kills everyone, and then runs away again! Please.. PLEASE don't make me sit through another season of that.. I really don't think I could deal with that..
Then we have West. Easy enough to predict. He's the rebel. Go against the way everyone else is, and you'll make your mark. This guy's been looking out for #1 all of last season, even when it hurts the relationship he's been in. So what? Yawn.
Then there's The Haitian. We didn't get to see much of him this last season, and when we did, he was his usual talkative self, and not much was shed on his background. Granted, his back story and such is interesting, and I'd love to see where his character is going, but now that he's spoken to Claire and Noah, you might as well keep him talking, instead of being that intense non-verbal shady character that he used to such great effect in season 1. Have him open up and talk, or kill him off now, because if he talks, it might ruin the story, and if he keeps quiet, he's not going to project the same kind of sinister aura that he did back in season 1...
Anyway, that's my rant. There are predictable folks and characters in the show, and I really don't have a problem with that as much as dealing with the same responses EVERY time something comes along...
Maya: Oh look, the bus left without me.. *cries black tears, everyone on the bus and sidewalk and buildings dies*.. Oh! The bus stopped! But everyone's dead! I need to run! *Climbs into bus, shoves driver onto floor, and drives bus away*
wow, i completely agree with everything, i even disagreed with the haitian part at first (till i read it)
now i agree...the haitian as the intense, never speak, guy in s1 was awesome, even when he did talk it was like "oh shnap! this must be important!" now...he talks no matter what =[
I really liked Simone and didn't get the fandom hate for her.
MPOL,
I didn't hate Simone either. In fact, I enjoyed her character to the extent of her budding romance with Peter, the wonderful scene under the umbrella, the jealously of Isaac the painter, the break-up with Isaac.
The only thing that grated on me was actually Isaac's reaction to her... But I guess, I've never been a drug addict, so I wouldn't know how a drug addict would react to losing his love...
BUT, I do hate Maya, because she was a throwaway character for Sylar. They wrote her part and she played it too chirlish, meaning too much like a giggling little girl that knows nothing of the wider world around her -- like, I am denying that I have these deadly powers, and yet, I am reacting this way to this guy... Sorry, I didn't buy that, because I did not think she was fundamentally schizophrenic. But that's just my opinion.
See I'd be all for killing off Maya If they gave her something important to do last season and everyone still did not like her. But if they killed her off, then my time invested in her (even if I don't really like her) was wasted. I'd much rather they bring her back, improve her (give her a back bone, understand her power more) and then give her something kick ass to do, to make me like her.

That's of course assuming they will listen to you, and do as you want them to -- a highly unlikely scenario. They might underutilize her in season 3 as well and then where are we?
We'll be in the same boat as we were back in season 2.. Hating her character, and waiting for her to either run afoul of Sylar, and die, or somehow end up in a bad way, and disappear..
Either way, she's going to provide quite a distraction, which might help the writers sneak some content past us for a little while.
After all, while we're not going to be giving her much attention, they'll have something in the background or scene that will give hidden spoilers for some upcoming episodes.. Then folks will be glued to the scenes where she's in it if only for the sake of trying to decipher the next scene and the potential clues that they hold..
Mind you, I'm not saying that's what's going to happen, but it could be a funny and quite plausible scenario they'll use to keep Maya around.....
I'm going to break the ice here and say .... i like Maya!
Okay, she's not the best character and the writers should have given her more stuff to do! BUT now, there is no more running from the cops, no more Mylar/Saya whatever AND now we can see her powers evolve! I'm glad that Maya is back!
Hercules67, very true, in which case I think they would kill her off anyway. Easy fixed.
I'm not too sure if this is a spoiler but Tim Sale, over at his site has said that it is very likely that he will have work for the show in Villains!
Quote:
Production starts soon and shooting starts May 1st, I'm told. I'm also told I have a job, and I've heard some rumors about just what that means, but I know nothing for sure.
I look forward to what I hope will be a big start right out of the gate.
The only reason I see to keep Maya around (and I apologize if this has been said before) would be if her power could kill the "regenerators". That would require a little backbone!
