Folks, I couldn't disagree more. As I have said before, IMHO, I think that the producers are taking completely the wrong tack on this show. They have frontloaded all their special effects in the first few eps, and now they have the very first ep where there are absolutely zero SFX! This is not what is going to keep an audience. If this show just turns into another quirky nighttime soap the ratings are going to plummet. Nobody would pay $10 to go see the Xmen talk to each other about their problems... they wanna see havoc! And the same thing applies to this show.
Well then go watch X-men. No one's forcin you to watch it. Fact of it is, you must care about the show somewhat if you're on a forum complaining about it. That, or you have nothing better to do since you have no life.
i don't really care about special effects, as long as the story and character are interetsing. i was riveted to my chair when Ted boiled the water in the glass.... a glass of water boiling !!! if the writers and producers managed to grab me with that, seems to me they did their job.
plus : as much as i love xmen, i don't want Heroes to turn into them. and...as i recall, there are a lot of "talking-heads" moments in xmen comics and movies too

DarkShadows ran for years, and i dont remember a whole lot of action there..........but i do see your point that ratings would drop.

Why do you think that hiro isn't back after the count of five? Is he stuck in the past? Is it possible that he is with the waitress somewhere else because he would be with her keeping her away from work? How does that work with hiro's timeline? where should "hiro" be?

Many theories surrounding your question - look here:
OK I thought that the picture at the end wasof hiro and the waitress at her birthday party. see early in the episode she says to Hiro and Ando that she got her deep knoledge about a week ago, when she got that book. when she starts speaking in Japanese Ando goes, "You learned all that in 6 days?" So maybe Hiro went a little too far back. As in at least a week back.
She said "I got this Japanese phrase book for my birthday about 6 months ago and I started poking thru it last week."
So Hiro jumped a little farther than he wanted to... And if you look at my post with the picture from her birthday, I don't think he looks very happy about it.
No, he wasn't at all. However, it would explain why he may not have met Ando. He may not have remembered the exact time/day he was to meet him in the diner.
I'm sure he remembered, but he doesn't seem to have the skill to aim his jumps very well. His first big jump, to New York, ended up five weeks in the future. His second big jump, the return trip, was two days off target.
Another GREAT episode synopsis as you watch t he show, wow!!!
Er, I decided after I posted the following that it may not fit, exactly. but, I am going to let it stay for "I'm such a dork sometimes"purposes. In going with the show, which has gray areas to the characters, I guess this is one of my human moments? lol, anyways .. on to my original post before I came back to edit.
It's interesting how this show gives us things, but also holds some things back.
This is a TV show on a TV schedule and a TV budget. yeah, I noticed they seemed to frontload the SFX on the first few epi's too. I hope they won't be crunched for time or money to hold back on us. Maybe go old school with effects?
The X-Files was able to be poplar without a lot of SFX. But they had the advantage of setting up their dark-shadowy atmosphere which worked great to hide SFX.
Gosh, there seems to be so MUCH and it's not even ep 10 yet ... how many epi's will there be in a season? I think I read they thought 22, but NBC wants 24? Interesting! I remember The X-Files epi-numbers changed season to season:
1-24 (including the pilot), 2-25, 3-24, 4-24, 5-20, movie, 6-22, 7-22, 8-21, 9-19
ADDED TOO:
We know Hiro goes back six months cause she got a Japanese translation book for her birthday and there is a photo with Hiro. And there is an episode coming up called "Six Months Ago". Golly, it would be weird if she didn't remember him because he hadn't gone back in time yet but she DID get that Japanese translation book from HIM. Unless she had a bad memory then ... but that is still a stretch. Cause then how could she have the object but not remember the person? *brain explodes, Sylar cries* lol
That dream/memory kid has a fascinating power. It sure was useful to add background to Mohinder :-p
AND I wanted to add I know the show just fine without a lot of SFX. I DO watch it for the characters and the story!
Ditto. As long as the story is really good we don't need too many special effects. I didn't even think that Hiro gave the waitress the japanese translation book. We will have to see if that is right. It makes sense. That episode is going to rock.

Just some random observations by an evil genius:
I think you're wrong about Mohinder seeing a boy in his dreams. I suspect that that was a girl, namely his sister, who is still alive inside his mind.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists introduced the Doomsday Clock in 1947, when it was seven minutes to midnight. It has gotten as close as one minute and as far as 14 minutes from armageddon. It is currently back at seven minutes to nuclear midnight.
