Yep, I've been waiting for a chance to tel you that I love you're avatar although I liked the previous one better. The Daleks are great, I have a Dalek T-shirt my brother bought me for my birthday. I've only seen one episode of Torchwood but I love Doctor Who and I'm crazy excited about Christopher Eccleston coming onto Heroes.
Yes it is a british show, but it had a Canadian airing. I'm not sure if it's aired in the US yet but I assume so because it's pretty popular. And Christopher Eccleston is also British so we'll have to see if he pulls a House and changes his accent or whether the Invisible Man is going to have a british heritage. (Personally I doubt Eccleston could pull off an american accent nearly as believably as Hugh Laurie, he's amazing!)
I watched Dr. Who on PBS regularly from about 1980 to 1987. Then I went to college. I don't know where to get it now. Colin Baker had just started to be the doctor when I stopped! Maybe some U.S. PBS stations still carry it.
Doctor Who was a classic of what I like to call "kabuki science fiction".
Kabuki is theatre with minimal sets and props, and the audience understands the visual shorthand of the genre, so that everyone knows that the actor with a riding crop is in fact on horseback, and if he is swinging the crop over his head, he is at a gallop.
Doctor Who was a show where a character points at what is painfully obviously a guy in a dimestore mask and shout "Look, an alien!" and everyone in the audience knows that this means that the guy in the mask is an alien, and agrees to suspend disbelief about that.
The series goes all the way back to the early 1960's, and went on hiatus in the late 80's or early 90's. The new incarnation of the show is budgeted to allow almost good special effects, but like the earlier version, it relies on excellent writing and acting. I like both the new doctors, and am enjoying Torchwood, the spinoff series.
The original series aired from 1964-1989, sporting in those years 8 different actors to play the Doctor. It was brought back in 2004 on the BBC and Sci-Fi with Christopher Eccleston. the show is currently on its 10th doctor (david tennant) and yes, it has had VAST visual improvements in its revamping (Cybermen actually look cool now).
I remember the acting being pretty good, the writing OK, and the props just very cheesy. I remember seeing an interview with an actress (Louise Jameson) who had played a sidekick, saying that she had learned dozens of different ways to intone, "What is it, Doctor?" and that she would not return to the show unless they let her play the doctor.
I think the original Star Trek should also qualify as kabuki science fiction.
Someday I will get cable and spend hours on end (which I probably can't spare) watching the Sci-Fi channel.
SciFi is my Friday night hangout, since I have no life and would rather stay at home than go out with my friends. Heroes at 7, Dr. Who at 8... it's all good! I only ever saw one episode of Christopher Eccleston's season of Dr. Who, but I'm still ridiculously excited for him to be on Heroes.
