In January 2005, it was selected by Electronic Gaming Monthly as 6th on their list of "the 10 most important games ... that helped redefine the industry since ... 1989". Citing its "beautiful cut-scenes and a deep, introspective narrative", they claimed that "Squares game was ... the first RPG to surpass, instead of copy, movielike storytelling", and that, without it, "Aeris wouldnt have died, and gamers wouldnt have learned how to cry".
IGN gave it a 9.7. The fanbase for SOC is almost more insane about it than we are about Heroes, if you can believe that. If you haven't played Shadow of the Colossus and you own a PS2 then you are missing out on what is probably the most significant gaming experience of a lifetime.
(I've been playing games since the Atari 2600, so I don't make statements like that lightly.)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. There's just something about it, I can enjoy starting over from the beginning again and playing through as much as I enjoy continuing to get that one item or bit of percentage.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker. Ocarina has been voted one of the best on pretty much every game list that covers just Nintendo or all games. Revolutionized gaming for me. Then Wind Waker was just an amazing game in and of itself. I loved the cell shading effect, contrary to many gamers who wanted a "manley man" Link. Zelda in general is my favorite series, if we ignore the Wind of Gamlon. That was a mistake. A very, very, very sad mistake.
Best game I ever played was a game called KnightBoy; theres a funny Japanese name for it KIKIKAIKAI or something. I loved that game so much I would steal quarters from my mom's person. And i could play for hours at a time with just one quarter. It was great. And sort of a super hero like story line. I still can't figure out why he was throwing clouds though.
The first computer game that I fell in love with was the original DOOM
Blowing things up and killing demons...
it just doesn't get better than that.
BYD
I too remember Pong
and my families amazement that we lived in an age
where one could actually play games on television.
It was truly an age of miracles and wonders.

OK, so it's not a game so much as it is a combat simulator. But by golly, Close Combat 2 was one of the best simulators ever.
Like most great command strategy games, it gave you zero control over your troops. You could issue orders to squads and they would carry them out if their morale was high enough. But if you issued bad orders, their morale would break.
Each soldier's mental state was modeled; they could be in normal state, or in panic, making irrational decisions. Or they could be heroic (which might get them killed) but doing scary brave stuff.
Hmm... Well, I've always enjoyed (I keep adding to this as I type...) Pacman, Lemmings, Breakout, Frogger and Space Invaders on almost any system I could find them on (and yes, I have played Pacman with the ball - I want to say that that was how I first played it, but I don't remember that for a fact). For the NES, I can still remember Final Fantasy, the two Legend of Zelda games (although, really, I thought the first was much better). Of course Mario Brothers 3 (1 wasn't bad, but I think I played it after 3. And it wasn't for another couple years before I played 2, and it wasn't quite as good to me). I liked Sonic 2 on the Sega Genesis, as well as Mortal Kombat 2 (one of the only, if not the only game that got me in trouble at school - indirectly, and in elementary school, but still).
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion deserves mention, I feel, although extremely glitchy at times (to the point of getting stuck in storylines), it was definitely a benchmark game for me.
I never quite understood about FFVII... my friend (and dad) loved it, and I kept hearing that it had 'the best graphics'. I really didn't think so. Now, in the scenes, yes, I could understand that comment, but not out of. And I thought that the Materia was a very interesting idea to work abilities.
I never really got into FFVI or FFIV, and so would rank those as the lowest of the FFs at least.
Now, Ocarina of Time, I loved. Now, I don't think I played any others than Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link on the NES before that, but I thought it was amazing. I also enjoyed the change in style for Wind Waker, and it was a good game, but the GameCube put me off while trying out the Final Fantasy for it (Crystal Chronicles?), and it said that we had no space on the memory cards (we owned 2 or 3 games and were renting that one. At the most we had 2 files per game each. This also gave the XBox a plus in my mind as we'd been having problems with the PS memory cards being wiped as well.)
I also remember Doom, but the one that sticks in my mind is the Wolfenstein one.
Another I'd like to mention was the Monster Rancher Battle Card Game 2 for PS, which I really enjoyed (of course, I like card games a whole lot as well, so that may be why), but no one else in my house did.
Of course, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is gaining, as it may end up being the only game that I beat before my brother that we both play.
Yes, I know, but I can't decide on just one game, when there are so many that are SOOOO good...
This is a hard topic...! It's too hard to choose. .__.
I'd have to say the best game I've ever played is one of the following:
Final Fantasy VI (Awesome storyline! And such great characters! And the opera!)
EarthBound (So funny and weird yet, kind of touching...)
LoZ: The Wind Waker (Waaah! So much FUN! I get to explore and sidequest and...!)
Chrono Trigger (It's just plain GOOD. Frog~!)
Puzzle Bobble (Oddly addictive...!) *__*
Virtual On (It was a fighting game/mech piloting simulator. 50 cans of pure AWESOME.)

Although my first thought is to pick Chrono Trigger, FF VI or IX or one of the GREAT roleplayers of the past that SE put out for us to devour and love, I can't, in good conscience, omit what is the pinnacle of SE's craft.
Kingdom Hearts II.
If Virtual On is 50 cans of pure awesome, KH II is a whole pallet. That game took characters from Disney, and from SE and compiled them into a game that topped even its predecessor in complexity and wonder of design. It plays well, replays well...and you just can't beat summoning Mickey Mouse to pwn badguys ^^.
