| We did not get to see Zane use his power before Sylar studied his brain up close and personal. We can surmise from Sylar's new ability though, that Zane had the ability to transform solids into liquids. We do not know whether he could further manipulate matter or simply melt items. We suppose that Zane had not learned to control his ability yet, due to the half-melted items in his home and the desperate plea for Mohinder come over quickly. |

| It seemed like Zane could only melt solid in-organic objects (toaster, phone, pot, etc.) I wonder if it could reach a point to liquefy organic things, such as plants or people.... |

I think "melt" is not the best word for his power. Melt makes me think of adding heat to something, but I dont think that is what he did. he did liquify objects and to become a liquid molecules have to vibrate at a faster rate than in a solid form. I think he sped up the vibration of the moleculesand this creates a ripple throughout the entire object, like dropping a rock in a pond, until the whole obect is liquid. Notice that when he withdrew his hand it returned to its solid state.
I dont mean to argue word choice or symantics... |

He could liquefy objects (so far, we only know metals for sure) much like the Clock from The Lost Room can sublimate brass. |

| There was a half liquified phone on the ground so I dont think it is just metals. |

If I'm not mistaken, that is the definition of heat. |

Heat is not the only thing that can vibrate molecules. Sound does it too as well as motion. What if his hand is a "fleshly tuning fork" that he can vibrate at an incredible rate and cause the molecules in an object to vibrate to the point of turning liquid. Now I just threw that out...
However, that much heat would create light which we didnt see. Also the objects didnt really "melt"; they kinda made a "splash." |

| It would be really interesting to see more things be liquified. Because it mostly looked like metal objects. Liquifying people would be a helluva power. |

.
How would that be different from Ted Sprague causing them to die from radiation (if it is done with a sufficient amount of radiation, the person "melts" or liquifies from the intense radiation - something that was discovered in Hiroshima). I hope the writers don't go down that road but I would not be surprised if Sylar decided to try it. |

There is not much that can be said about Zane or his power, but for Sylar thats a whole new ball game
As they walked across the floor of his apartment, nothing shimmered.... nothing moved... so it was all solid again after his manipulation, he just couldnt shape it while melting it...
imagine if sylar used his Telekinesis to hold a shape after melting, he could effectively create sharp projectiles out of anything, or any kind of weapon, he could melt walls, and rebuild them before allowing them to harden
there are endless possibilties here and i cant wait to see how this develops |

Heat is not the only thing that can vibrate molecules. Sound does it too as well as motion. |
And what is the net effect of vibrating molecules? Heat.
Microwaves do it too. Excite molecules. They get hot.
I'm convinced there's no heat involved here, Anything hot enough to melt a chrome-vanadium steel wrench would certainly crack the glass jar it was in. Even if it didn't crack, it would conduct the heat through well enough to set fire to the table underneath it.
I'm going with the ability to negatively affect molecular cohesion of certain substances, possibly inorganic substances, possibly something more complex. |

well i think he just change molecules. See: in hard things the moleculs are ordered. in liquid things they arent ordered.
So i think he just destroys the order of things |

| That's pretty much what Slippy just said. Interesting how the glass jar didn't melt along with the wrench, but it probably requires a different kind of "melt power" to do glass, metal is probably just easier somehow. Melting people would be pretty darn messy. |
