So, I'm noticing that many fans don't like the fact that Peter gaining Intuitive Aptitude involves him slicing heads. Well, for those that don't like this whole Peter absorbing IA, I offer you a theory:

Some are saying that Peter has to cut heads open for power - to gain an ability - like Sylar did. Firstly, this makes no sense because Peter already has flight. If this is why you dislike Peter cutting heads open, then I argue that there's no reason to dislike this storyline at all, because gaining power is NOT why Peter is slicing heads. In episode 4, "I Am Become Death" Sylar told Peter that the "hunger" is a hunger for KNOWLEDGE. This is confirmed in the back room of the Bennet home between P. Peter and F. Gabriel. Here is the quote:

"My ability is not not just to understand how things work. There's a hunger, to KNOW more, to have more."

Gabriel says that the hunger is one to know more, not to necessarily gain abilities or have more power... just knowledge. If this is the reason Peter has to cut heads open, to examine brains for knowledge, rather than power, then I love this storyline. Sylar's power is to UNDERSTAND how things work, and the hunger that comes with it is to (understandably) know everything, no matter what it is, and knowledge is found in the brain.

When Peter is cutting Nathan's head open, he says:
"I need to... I need to... I need to UNDERSTAND... your intentions..."

Peter says nothing about power.

I, too, would hate it if Peter was hungering for power, but I don't think that's where the writers are going to take this ability... I think Peter is hungering for knowledge. A knowledge to know everything.

If his is the case, and this PK theory turns out to be true, would you like the storyline better?

PK I love it...and I think you hit the nail on the head. Though the writer's do have a propensity to forget their own mistakes, etc.... I don't think they would be dumb enough to just feed us a Peter that is hungry for power, to kill, etc...... but the hunger for knowledge is interesting.
Here's my only hole in that theory that I can poke....if Peter can read minds and get inside people's heads, how would he not be able to read his brother's mind, and use Gabriel's ability to understand his intentions through those thoughts (much like Gabrial understood the power of the dude that fed off of fear and was able to then use that ability.......which I haven't seen a posting or topic covering it so I apologize if it's already been covered, but F. Gabriel can't have Peter's power to absorb abilities (mimic, empathy, whatever you want to call it).....so he must have just progressed his ability in the future to the point where all he has to do is understand the other individuals ability in order to harness it, rather than having to examine their brain.

i agree too. sylar used that need of knowledge to gain powers very distinct way. if you notice peter coudlnt read nathan. that seemed to be what set him off. he couldnt understand or r ead what he wanted to read and then HAD to read it. it didnt strike me at all that it was a need to gain his power.

As I said in my theory, Sylar's ability is more advanced then Peter's in the way that he can actually see everything about the brain and how it works, even the later possibilities of the ability as he informed Claire.

I support the whole idea that Peter is 'knowledge' hungry. I do believe Sylar is both Power Hungry & Knowledge Hungry, but this is the fundamental difference with Peter. Peter thirsts for knowledge so that he may 'change the past', which is his most basic motivation, and so this manifests more powerfully as his Hunger.

I doubt this happens, but - What if Present Peter travels back in time and is actually the one to kill Charlie so he can take her ability? (I doubt it, but the craving knowledge made me think about it.)
