I took an Akido class once (one college semester) and we learned to roll like that. You tuck yourself into a ball and land on one of your shoulders, then you roll "point by point by point" along your body. That way only a small area of your body is on the ground at any one time, and that's supposed to be better than a larger area.
It just goes to show how much of a miracle we are, and how little is impossible for us to accomplish.
I wish I could move like this, but I've never been very good at body kinesthetics, even when I was little.
They had people doing this in the movies "Casino Royale" & "Live Free or Die Hard".
I've taken Aikido also (for quite a few years), and let me tell you, what you see on the screen IS NOT impossible!
BTW, if you liked that, you might like this:
(It's from my second favorite TV Show, after "Heroes" -- called "Top Gear" from the BBC. In this episode, they race a Peugeuot 207 against two guys doing the "Parkour" [what this is called] in Liverpool -- the guys win!)
The rolls those guys do are not that incredible. The jumps are what gets me! You're right! Every time they jump, I think they'll shatter a bone! But they're young, and when you're young you don't think that way, at all!
He sounds a lot like Stephen Fry, but the hair was kind of off. Oh well, it was pretty awesome anyway.
I must be an old soul, 'cause I'm young and I'm always terrified of getting hurt somehow. I guess spraining my ankle so badly I have permanent damage and arthritis makes me wary of things like that.
The rolls are standard. I've seen that a lot in TV and movies, and I'm grateful they at least do that. It relieves the pressure on their legs. I know someone who shattered their shin bones when they jumped from the roof of their house without bothering to cushion their fall.
