I wonder if Kensei knew he had this - I didn't quite catch it, but he said something about "next lifetime" to Hiro when he was shot. OTOH, that was mild compared to what I expected him to say if he thought he were dying as a result of Hiro's actions.
This could make Hiro and Kensei an interesting team.
I am going out on a shaky limb here... I dont think that Kensai has an ability. I know what we saw last night, but I also know what we did not see. When Claire was shot, her body pushed the bullet out as she was being healed. That DID NOT happen with the arrow in his chest (the one that Hiro did not pull out).
Remember when Hiro an Ando were in Vegas and the showgirl shot at them and hiro backed the bullet back into the gun? We discussed how he did that. It was mentioned then that there was shock on the girl's face as if she saw it happening. Some speculated that he simply sent the bullet back in time. What if Hiro sent Kensai's body back in time in a similar fashion and healed him?
If Kensai has regeneration, then I will be mad that Kring did not have his body push the other arrows out!!
Let's not forget, both Claire and Peter had to have offending objects removed from then before they regenerated. Granted, they both had objects in their brain, but didn't that particular arrow pierce his heart? Maybe it, too, had to be removed before he could heal up.
I was wondering why he didn't have to remove the arrow either for him to regenerate. I guess we'll find out if he really has a power or not, but at least that's what they want us to believe right now.
To be honest, if you're going for a timeline Byd, then Claire has something in common with Kensei, since he's quite a bit older than she is at this point, being back in the 1600's, while she's in present day!
I think it has a bit of a twist actually, not regeneration but resurrection. He died, then healed. I think he carries his wounds until he dies, then they heal, hence his alcoholism. To deal with the pains until his next death.
I think it's just plain simple regeneration, Claire-style. Kring mentioned that they would introduce characters with identical powers - and here they are.
West - Nathan
Claire - Kensei
Peter - ? (Claude mentioned "you're one of them", meaning others like him have existed.)
I think we'll see more duplicates in the future (or past, as the case may be ).

When I first saw that last night, I thought it was a result of Hiro reversing time on the object in question (being the wounds made by the arrows) rather than kensei being able to heal....but then I changed my mind when Hiro said "godsend".....so I'm on the fence with this one
I'm with Longhairdfreak on this one. I think he doesn't heal persay - I think he resurrects. That's why he said "Sorry, Carp. Maybe I'll be a hero next time around." Then he dies, and does his Doctor Who trick.
THIS would explain even better why the legend claims he cuts out his own heart. Maybe when he fought the 'dragon' he became so mashed up and wounded that he wasn't strong enough to continue. So he rrrips out his own heart - to die and be reborn anew!

I think Kensei said "next time around" expecting reincarnation, not resurrection. Reincarnation is/was a very common belief in Japan, and Kensei might have picked it up.
Or it could be resurrection. I'm just offering an alternate explanation for why Kensei said that.
