Reputation points are a kind of reputation currency you earn while on the board. You earn rep points two ways, first by age (length of time you have been active since you registered) and the second by number of posts. The more you post, the more rep points you get. It's like an eBay-"ish" feedback system for members to rate each other.
Rep points act as a way for others to see how you are thought of on the board (i.e. what your "reputation" is.) When you give someone rep points by voting for them, you can also write a little note explaining why you gave them. Also if someone helps you make an avatar or answers a question for you for example, you can give them rep points for helping, These are subtracted from your reputation total however.
It takes 20 posts to earn 1 point of reputation, and you get 1 rep point every 7 days for age. If you're being obnoxious other people will give you negative rep which will offset the minimal bonus you get for age anyway. The medals for reputation are as follows:
4th Place Medal: 100 Rep Points
3rd Place Medal: 500 Rep Points
2nd Place Medal: 1000 Rep Points
1st Place Medal: 2500 Rep Points
Over time, your reputation number gets bigger and become a symbol of how you contribute to our Heroes community.

Interesting idea, but you say that you get respect by how long you have been on the forum, well what if you are an asshole but has a long time with the forum. do you still get respect?

If I increase someone else's reputation do I lose that many reputation points? Because I went to increase someone's rep & it said I only had so much to spend...

Doesn't that take away from the purpose of rep though? I belong to a figure skating board where we give out rep.......if you're a good person, your rep blocks stay green.......people will know if you've been a butt hole if they see your rep blocks are red.
We can give out up to 10 reputation points per day to other people but that doesn't take away from OUR over all total.

Yes it does take away from your total when you give out points. A negative vote for someone does not alter your rep though, just the person receiving the negative vote. However, I would use extreme caution in giving negative votes. Occasionally, Superhiro will give out rep points to the mods to hand out to deserving members.
