| After reading some good "Question and Answer" interviews, in various publications, I decided it would be a good idea for our site to have a dedicated post to them. |

*from EW.com 11/2/06
Heroes' cast and creator assess five popular THEORIES about the show:
THEORY #1 The current, official operating idea is this: In times of profound global crisis, forces of nature produce new kinds of people that can deal with the world's problems.
--''We reserve the right to change this theory as we go along,'' says creator Tim Kring, suggesting that scientific or maybe even extraterrestrial intervention is possible.
THEORY #2 Niki is triple-timing as serial killer Sylar.
--It's a popular notion among fans, but as Ali Larter points out: ''I don't even think of her as having powers.'' Nonetheless, Kring calls the Sylar-Niki connection ''very viable.'' The Nov. 27 episode, which reveals the roots of Niki's schizoid nature, will settle the matter.
THEORY #3 Horn Rimmed Glasses doesn't want to stop human evolution — he's just trying to slow it down so the heroes can grow into their mutantdom.
--''Interesting,'' is all Kring will say. Whatever his plan, you'll see H.R.G. ''get stressed out'' during sweeps, says Jack Coleman. ''He's trying to put out 100 fires at once.''
THEORY #4 Hiro changes the future just by racing through time. But if that's the case, hasn't he already saved New York from disaster, per The Butterfly Effect?
--We'll find out this month when Hiro's rules of time travel are explained. And Future Hiro's sword? ''It becomes a major part of the show,'' says Kring.
THEORY #5 Niki's son, Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey), is creating the entire world in his head. There's also the contention that an unseen comic-book writer is behind the action.
--Kring swears there are no ''It's all in a snow globe'' moments in store. As for Micah, Larter says he has powers, she knows what they are, and she ain't telling.

Q&A with Heroes Creator Tim Kring
What is the serial killer, the Sylar character? Is he something that is going to go through the whole season?
--Yes, Sylar will be the major villain for the first season.
The people with the heads cut off and the brains removed--I assume are not by accident.
--There is an M.O. that we are starting to become familiar with, and it does have a genuine threat to our heroes.
Many people are saying Niki’s power resembles that of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Are her powers along those lines?
--It’s a very safe thing to assume it’s a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Hulk kind of personality. But we are leaving the door very open for new surprises.
Can Claire die?
--It is safe to assume that whatever power she has emanates from some region in the brain that can be turned on and off by a switch. And there is eventually a clue as to why the major villain of the show is interested in her.
You’ve said they will not form a justice league but at the same time, there will be some sort of coming together beyond crossing paths--is that right?
--Yes, as their destinies start to intermingle with one another, they form alliances. And they start to figure out what is going on. Every character has a tiny piece to the puzzle, and the puzzle gets put together by the characters coming together.

*Article: Everybody's Heroes- We reveal the secret identities of NBC's superpowered saviors
Krings reveals:
--Niki Sanders - "Her journey is about figuring out how to unify this other side of her and ultimately to control it"
--Nathan Peterlli - "A guy running for office is really under a microscope," Kring says. "Nathan doesn't want to be seen as strange and unappealing."
--Peter Petrelli - He has the ability to absorb other people's powers. But beware, Kring says: "He will be tempted whether to use it for good of evil."
--Monhinder Suresh - "He's on a journey to discover what his father knew and why he died knowing it"
--Hiro Nakamura - After discovering he can bend the space-time continuum and teleport himself across the world the Japanese office worker couldn't be happier. "It's no coincidence that we named him Hiro," Kring says. He truly is on a hero's quest."
--Claire Bennet - The Texas cheerleader is indestructible, but "like any teenager, the last thing she wants is to be different from everybody," Kring says.
--Matt Parkman - A lowly L.A. cop, Matt is slowly learning that he has telepathic powers. "It's both a blessing and a curse," says Kring. "He hears what he wants to, but also what other people really think of him," The FBI will enlist his help in tracking the mysterious serial killer Sylar.
--Micah Sanders - Micah inherited more than good looks from mom Niki and superpowered dad. Micah's special ability is "something very different than either of his parents."
--Isaac Mendez - The tortured artist predicts the future when he paints in a heroin-induced haze. "Early in the season he's trying to figure out these powers exist when he isn't high," Kring says.
--Simone Deveaux - "You can't have a entire show where everybody had a power." says Kring. "She's a very important character because she's the voice of the average person saying, 'This is crazy. This isn't real!'" |

TV Guide Weekly (magazine) Oct 23-29/06
*What exactly is Niki's power?
-- "The other characters' powers are fairly clear," says Kring. "We wanted to keep one mysterious for awhile, and for the audience to discover the ability along with her. But her power will be explained fairly quickly"
*Who is Sylar, and why does he remove the brains from his victims' heads?
-- ""He's very bad and very powerful. It is "reasonable" to assume, based on his initial appearance, that he has more than just a single superpower. He will be our villain for Season 1. Clearly the brain is something he's interested in. And that will be explained. Look for Sylar to make his next move in November""
*In the Oct 2 episode, Hiro traveled through time to Nov 8, when he saw NYC destroyed. Does that mean the heroes only have until the real Nov 8 to prevent the bomb?
-- "TV dates and real-world dates may coincide once in awhile, but don't read too much into this particular concurrence. The truth is that the show takes place in a much different time frame. When we have cliff-hanger endings, youre not coming back a week later-you're coming back instantly. So, I wouldnt get too locked into thinking something will happen by Nov 8. November 8 might not come until the end of the season."
*Niki's son, Micah, has powers of his own, right? He doesn't seem like an average kid.
"Well, no one on this show is exactly average," laughs Kring. "And both of his parents have special powers, so..."
*Claire's adoptive father — "Horn-Rimmed Glasses," is obviously very sinister. What's up with this guy?
"He knows something, he's tracking these people, and he may be up to no good," Kring says, "but he also loves his daughter and tries to be a good father. It makes for a fascinating character."
*Does the solar eclipse we saw in the pilot have something to do with the characters' discovering that they have special powers?
"In the pilot, the eclipse was really meant mainly to be a single global event that could connect all these characters visually and in time," says Tim Kring. "But that's not to say that we won't discover that it maybe had some other effects, as well. We will, but it will not be explained for a while." |

USA TODAY 10/9/06 - ‘Heroes' imitates comic-book art in content, format
By Bill Keveney
Heroes creator Tim Kring isn't a big reader of comic books, but he has embraced the form in his new NBC drama about ordinary people with extraordinary powers.
Niki (Ali Larter), a single mother who owes money, is struggling to make ends meet. Her power: to be in two places at once. Hiro (Masi Oka) discovers he can move through space and time, a great escape for someone trapped in his job. And indestructibility, or any power, is a burden on high school cheerleader Claire (Hayden Panettiere). “The last thing a teen wants is to be different,” Kring says.
And the mutants themselves are mutable, Kring says. They can die, lose their powers and turn to good or evil. “What you do with these powers is up to you. There's a free will attached to it.” |

Detroit Free Press - 10/29/06 - Quirky 'Heroes' is a super success - BY MIKE DUFFY
"There's no relation at all to 'The X-Men,' " says Kring of his "Heroes" saga. "My idea was to try and ground it in reality as much as possible, so that the audience would feel that this could happen to them or anyone they knew."
"That again is one of the beauties of having a show with this many storylines. It allows you to find a moment at the end of each episode for a cliffhanger," says Kring. "Some are more jaw-dropping than others. Some are more intellectual, some more visceral."
So where's the comic relief?
It usually arrives in the cheerfully upbeat form of Masi Oka ("Scrubs"), the Japanese-American actor who portrays a daydream believer named Hiro Nakamura. Oka's become the appealing breakout personality of "Heroes." His heroic Hiro is a whimsically rebellious Tokyo office drone; he discovers an ability to bend time, then teleports himself to America for his excellent supernatural adventure.
Though Oka speaks English, his scenes have been subtitled as Hiro speaks mostly in Japanese, providing another charming twist to the storytelling.
"He was added when I felt the show needed a little more levity, and it needed a character who embraced their power with a certain amount of enthusiasm," says Kring of the Hiro character. "And I think it is just that enthusiasm that people are finding so infectious."
The same goes for "Heroes" itself, a down-to-earth epic that's put a happy spell on viewers by just doing what comes supernaturally. |
