We see the Haitian as he has just altered the memory of Matt Parkman. HRG is curious as to what the experience of losing memory would be like. It reminds the Haitian of home.
The Haitian's father was the village priest, a special man, whom everyone loved. No one loved him more than his son.
The Haitian is playing with 2 other boys from the village when they hear a loud noise. It is men from the military dictator come to abduct his father. His father has a power and uses it to make the militia become violently ill.
As the Haitian arrives, his father's power fails. The father is shot and queries, "What did you do?" to his son.

I have two observations to put in here.
First, they mention that these military types are "The Boogieman", and that they are afraid of his father.
However, because of some ability of his own, he inadvertantly causes his father's death. So if this is the case...
Could The Haitian be Worse Than The Boogieman???
Just a thought... |

From the spoiler on this comic, Noah (HRG) knew the Haitian could talk from Episode 2 when they abducted Matt!
Thus, I'm thinking that he knew all along, but he was suprised that The Haitian broke his silence to talk to Claire. This was something completely unexpected, and Noah had to find out why. Thus his suprise at hearing that The Haitian could talk. Nobody else but Noah was supposed to know this little fact. Not even Thompson! |

A couple things piqued my interest here, and I'm not ready/able to wrap my brain around em yet. #1 the mention of the gansta's as "bogeymen" and #2 the "higher power" which the Haitian apparently answers to (now i know this could be the big "g", but I'm not set on that yet). I guess I'll have to wait for future GNs.
Jor i like your theory, but I'm not jumping on board yet. I guess I'm hoping the "WTTB" is someone we've yet to met.. maybe it's Sylar's dad with some super evil power. |

I'm liking your theory, Jorm. While we're never told that HRG knew Haitian could speak, I'm sure he could have, after working with him for over a decade.
After reading part 1, I've chosen to follow two new theorizing paths which I previously thought were only possibilities. The first is that Boogyman #2 is definitely evil. Haitian refers to the Boogymen as "Duvalier's private militia. Murderers. Rapists. Torturers. Monsters in human skins." The mentioning of the Boogymen in the novel, in my opinion, is by no means a coincidence. They are portrayed as the villains of that area in Haiti. Thus, if the Boogyman/Boogymen are evil, my second conclusion is that the Haitian is not Boogyman #2. After witnessing the capture/death(?) of his father, I just don't think that Haitian would turn evil. If anything, I think he'd want revenge AGAINST all that is evil.
The next question is, why did the Haitian join The Company? I think it was for the same reason as Mohinder's situation - they needed him. With mindwipe-man at their disposal, The Company could pull off anything and remain even more under the radar, moreso than ever before. Thus, perhaps as an incentive to join, Linderman/Thompson said that they would assist in taking down his father's attackers and the organization they work for. Or maybe it was just because his village gets destroyed (maybe we'll see it in part 2/3/4) and he has no where else to go, so when they find him, he's more than willing to join.
Furthermore, is it safe to assume that Haitian's father's ability was to create some kind of bodily sickness/plague in those whom he focused his power on? If so... perhaps this has something to do with the virus in Molly and Shanti... |

Actually, the main reason that I'm sticking with The Haitian to be WTTB is for one main reason:
In some way, he's responsible for the death of his father!
After all, it seemed that his father was taking care of those thugs that had confronted them, until The Haitian intervened. When that happened, his father lost control of his power, and the thugs were able to act and kill him.
Thus, unknowingly, The Haitian was the root cause of his father's death. Carrying around that burden can warp and twist a mind. If he's able to kill his father, and seem to not carry any emotional baggage from that incident, what else would he be able to do with no marks on his conscience?
That, IMO, is what can make him worse than the Boogieman.. |

I dunno... My thought is that Haitian was indeed affected emotionally by the attack on/death of his father. His face on the last page of part 1 is one of pain, hurt, and almost horror. I'm not sure if he realized why his father's abilities failed him, but once he understood that it was his own fault, I think he was changed forever. I'm going to take a stab at it and say this is why he stops speaking for a while. Hmmm... we'll soon find out... |
