Sylar looked back, the city was still glowing behind him. He had rode out the explosion inside a protective shell of telekinesis. As the fallout began to rain down on the city, he began to feel sick to his stomach. But there was only one power he needed to make it all better, and it was hiding in an untouched building.

The building was unaffected by the explosion, it stood at the epicenter of destruction. Half of New York lay in rubble, fanned out from the building. Sylar stared at the building, he had never seen it before. Even before his eyes, it shimmered and threatened to disappear.

Finally, the building disappeared entirely, leaving an empty skyline that stretched out to the harbor. Could it be that little Chinese guy and his friend, the one who could disappear on command? Could he be doing this? Sylar wondered. No, from what he had seen, that poor fellow was probably hiding on a deserted island in the middle of the pacific, with his eyes squeezed shut.

Sylar retched and doubled over. He retched again, a thin runner of yellow bile slowly made its way to the still soft pavement, evaporating instantly. For a moment, Sylar’s consciousness wavered, he felt the blistering heat radiating off of the pavement, the heat of the bomb leaching back out of it. He closed his eyes, concentrating. The pavement surrounding him hardened and cracked in places, a think layer of frost formed over it.

This can’t be happening. Sylar thought. “This can’t be happening!” he yelled out loud. “I am more powerful than God! I can’t die here,” he cried at the dead city. He could feel his cells slowly cracking apart from the radiation – he could even hear them.

Sylar closed his eyes, imagining each cell in his body. He held an image of his physical existence in his mind, down to the nucleus of each cell. The heat around him grew. He saw and felt what was wrong with the cells. Distantly, he could smell his own hair begin to smolder. For an instant, he could see each atom in his body; he forced them together, trying to fix them. At first, they didn’t respond and he felt them grow further apart. Sylar cleared his mind of all but one cell. Around him, the pavement began to blister, his shirt burst into flames as the heat of the glowing city crept forward. But he didn’t notice any of this – he kept the cell in his mind and forced it together. He surrounded it with protection, and felt the other cells follow suit.

As a flap of skin began to peel off of his chest, Sylar opened his eyes. The pavement again solidified as he cooled his surroundings. He waved a hand at his own heat, the rest of his burnt hair fell off, cleanly severed. With a savage tug, he liberated the skin hanging from his chest.

Sylar turned his attention once more to where the vanishing building had stood. It was still gone, but his mind remembered exactly where it had stood, down to the last shadow. “I can’t wait to use that power,” he said, as he bent his knees, jumped and took off toward the roof of the building.
