Billy, i never thought of this before until i read the first few lines of your post. PETE COULDNT REMEMBER................Hmmmmm can you say "Hatian"? It made me wonder if maybe the Hatian came in to wipe it all out, now that we know Momma Petreli has ties to the Hatian............could be dont ya think?
Etticat - couldn't remember what? (sorry now i can't remember either.. HAITIAN!... dun dun dun..) haha..
Another interesting side to that is.. if Peter came in touch with the Haitian, and in the process had his memory wiped... doesn't that mean that
PETE COULD HAVE THE HAITIAN'S POWERS..!!!
sorry for shouting.. got a bit excited..
only. he can't remember, so he wouldn't know he could hear it...
i wonder... if he could remember..
could he make sylar forget he was a 'super'? although I'm sure he'd figure it out sooner or later.. so wouldn't be a permanent fix by any means..
but it is interesting. Peter could maybe make people forget...
don't know how he'd use it - I think he'd feel too sorry, but it could come in very handy in some situations...
I need help figuring something out and this is the best place I can think to put it. When future Hiro came and spoke to Peter he mentioned Peter in the future had a scare. The thing is how is this possible as Peter can heal therfore he should have no scare. Someone plz help me clear this up
Why does everybody think that Peter has to absorb powers, to come close to people before he can use them?
Couldn't it be that he has all the powers buried inside him, but he needs to realize that a power excists. Like he knew that he could regenerate so his body did.
I know there are some weak spots in this post, but just look at the main point: so, no absorbing, no having to be in contact with, or in range of the original owner of the power
I dunno Jessica/Nikki. It seems to me that over the course of the past 18 episodes the writers have spent their time gradually showing us exactly what Peter's power is and how he can use it. To imagine that he inherently always had all of those powers seems counter-intuitive...
I've heard both sides of the argument, and to be honest, I've yet to see Peter be able to use a power until after he's been around someone with that ability.
Why would he have to wait to be able to use a power? If he was able to concentrate enough, he should be able to call up whatever power he needed at a given time. However, it's not until he meets somone with an ability that he's able to use that power. Take Claire for example. He didn't know she had a power until she ran to him after he fell off the stadium with Sylar. Then, as he's healing, he tells her that she must be special. If he'd had the power all along, why did it take her to activate something he'd already had?
I'm still very skeptical about Peter already having the powers stored, and just waiting to be released. I'm still of the idea that he's got to be in contact before he'll gain the power. Mainly becuase of my previous argument. However, this doesn't mean that the power has to be used for him to be able to gain the power. I am of the mindset that as long as the person is close by, Peter will gain the ability. Now, whether or not he knows what powers he's gained are something completely different. He ran into Eden, and my assumption is that he's got her ability, even though he never knew she was special. He's also met the Haitian, so he's also got the Memory supression ability. He's had a second run-in with Sylar, so whatever powers Sylar has, Peter should also have.. Unless there's something special about the way Sylar stores his stolen powers.
I agree with you, Jorm.....having seen my own theories about the subject shot out of the sky.
In fact, going by what's been said in interviews lately, I'll go even further and drag out another old favourite of mine.....for the most part (there are exceptions) for Peter to gain an ability, I think that he needs to be near that person while they're using their ability.
This is definitely how it works for Peter getting abilities from Sylar, so it's possible it could apply mostly across the board.

Sorry while I ponder this..
Slippy, actually agreeing with me?
Has to be a sleep-deprivation hallucination on my part, so instead of disbelieving it, I'll quote it, and hope that this is reality!
Great to have you on board Slippy!
Yeah.. I have to think that Peter seems to not have an ability unless it has been manifested while he's near.
However, I also harbor the idea that he's gained some powers while not knowing it.
After all, how do we know that Eden didn't use some form of her ability on him?
I don't.. But then again, the show doesn't tell, so I'm not keeping this idea in concrete.
My own theory on this is that whichever heroes Peter has been around (aside from Sylar), he has absorbed their powers, even if he hasn't realized it yet (Eden, Haitian, possibly Mama Petrelli). I exclude Sylar because he is very different. Going back to an old theory (just like Slippy ), I believe that Sylar can only utilize one ability at a time. After all, we have yet to see him prove otherwise. With Peter, he can access a number of abilities simultaneously - on the roof when HRG/Haitian find him and Claude, Peter uses TK while still invisible, and he remains invisible until he jumps off of the buildling because we can see Haitian/HRG following Peter to the edge with their thermal goggles still on their faces.
My old theory on Sylar which I am still going to stick to is that since we've only seen Sylar use one ability at a time, he is in fact manipulating his own DNA to display any one given power. Thus, when Peter and Sylar confronted each other at the high school, Sylar's body was in "telekinesis mode," which is how Peter absorbed that ability. Until we are shown otherwise, whether he is around Peter or not, I think that I am going to have to stick to this single-ability-Sylar theory.
I have to agree with you Popkorn. Otherwise, Peter should have quite a few more powers to tap into than just TK when facing Sylar. After all, if just remembering what the encounter was like is enough for Peter to recall a power, then the powers he'd absorb from Sylar would be at his command. If he'd gotten all of Sylar's powers, then he'd have more than just the TK to control when he'd think of Sylar. However, he's only displayed the ability for TK, and nothing else related to Sylar.
Yeah.. I have to think that Peter seems to not have an ability unless it has been manifested while he's near.
However, I also harbor the idea that he's gained some powers while not knowing it.

Let's see what happens!
It's intriguing...we've gotten kind of conflicting info from the writers here.
In a recent blog update, Beeman confirmed that Peter ONLY got TK from Sylar. Which, if my theory was correct, as stated earlier here, that Sylar actually resequences his DNA to use a power, would make sense. But, he also doesn't seem to have the ability to shut off his powers (as we see with Dale's power).
I'm of the impression that the power has to be active when Peter's around the person to get the power.
Let's go through the powers he has:
Flying - He said that his foot hovered for a split second before hitting the floor..this might have just been psychological. We never saw him /actually/ fly until he had been around Nathan flying up to save him.
Time stoppage - Hiro used this with him on the subway.
Telekinesis - Sylar used it on him with the lockers.
Healing - My guess is that Claire was still actively healing internal injuries from beind slammed against the wall when she ran into Peter in the hallway, transferring the ability to him then, and then it reactivated when she came near to him.
Now, here's the one that throws the monkey wrench in the gears:
Pre-cognition - Peter displayed this ability after meeting Isaac before his coma. He was not actively painting at that time. When Peter was in the hospital, he sketched his flying scene about to happen. This was actually a big clue in episode 2 that he could use his powers without others near by (unless Isaac was in the bed next to him at the time due to his heroine OD?) But, regardless, this kind of debunks the theory unless it's a retcon issue. We could always say that Isaac was painting half a second before the scene started and Peter was close enough to gain the power right there.
And then, of course, dream visions...which most speculate came from his dad.

The whole point of me starting this reply was to remind Jormen about Eden, and I'm finally now getting to that.

Eden generally refused to use her abilities unless forced by HRG. She didn't want to use it on Isaac until she saw what kind of horrible things Sylar does. She didn't use it on Mohinder to make him stay.
So, while we don't know for sure, available cannon makes me believe fully that she did not exhibit her ability actively to Peter.
So, Peter's been in contact with the Haitian and Eden and has not exhibited their powers. I don't think he actually has them because they didn't actively use them in his presence.

Now I'm not positive about this but I think Peter "flew" before Nathan flew up to save him; Remember when Peter and Nathan are arguing on the roof and Peter is on the ledge, he starts walking towards Nathan while talking to him when the camera pans out and you see Peter floating above the roof floor while talking to Nathan... Wasn't this before he jumped off the building to fly? If it was before then the theory that the powers must be active in order for Peter to absorb them is out the window.... If this was after, this post was a waste of two minutes... lol... April 23rd couldn't come any faster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Waste of 2 minutes
Peter jumped off the roof and fell, Nathan flew to catch him, Episode 1.
Peter sketches flying on the rooftop with Nathan, Episode 2.
Peter hovers with Nathan, Episode 2.
As you also stated before though, there are two big ones that Peter's exhibiting that we don't know where he got the power from. Precognition and the Dreaming.
Who in the show besides Issac has the precognition? Was Peter there to witness Issac "doing this thing"?
Who do we know in the show that has the draming ability?
As far as I know, the only one I can recall is Sanjong Iyer, the dream guide. However, he's in India, and I don't think he and Peter have contacted. I know Mohinder has, but third person transfer doesn't strike me as something Peter can do.
Claire's power I could see as a constant state type of power, thus Peter gained her ability just by being around her. After all, she doesn't concentrate on her ability in order to heal. Her body just does what it needs to in order to continue functioning.
So, does he get power like a sponge, or does he need to be able to file it?
If as a sponge, then where are his other powers?
If he has to file it, then where did he get the anomalies?
