I thought since we have few people here who like to discuss football, I'd start a separate thread so we can have a somewhat cohesive discussion. I asked in another thread who was going to play in the BCS championship game. I'm a WVU fan so I was very pleased to hear some people say they thought they would make it. However one poster (Herc! LOL!) said that WVU doesn't compare to LSU. How so? LSU could easily have 3 more losses. SEC is overhyped. Granted it's a tough conference but everyone beats everyone in there. I think WVU has issues for sure, namely finishing out games and protecting the ball in big games. But their Def has improved tremendously this season and their offense is stout. I'd love to see a WVU/LSU BCS Championship game!

As long as LSU is there, I am happy with any other opponent. LSU has already played 6 top 20 ranked opponents and will play another in the SEC championship game. If Vanderbilt beats Wake Forest, 11 of the 12 SEC teams will be bowl eligible.

If Kansas wins out, they will play in the BCS champ game, but I believe that to be unlikely. They have not played a single ranked opponent this year. I think Mizzou beats KU, then OU beats Mizzou in ther conf champ game, which does allow WVU to go to the BCS champ game, if they win their own games.

I hope your right BYD! WVU really shot themselves in the foot against USF. If they don't lose that game they are probably #1 right now at least #2.

On another topic, as a WVU fan me and the majority of fans feel like we don't get the respect we deserve. What is the perspective of others on WVU? What I mean is let's say WVU loses to UCONN this weekend, we're #3 in the BCS right now and #4 in the AP. I can almost guarantee they will fall to like #14 or so in the AP and probably #11-14 range in the BCS. Another team let's say Oklahoma can lose to an unranked opponent twice and not even fall out of the top 10! What does WVU need to do to gain this type of national respect?

*Edit* I just looked at Oklahoma's schedule and they only played 2 top 25 teams all year? Why all the love for them?

The Pats are so bad ass, they could defeat Peter Petrelli...no one will touch them all season, undefeated will be theirs, and they will beat Dallas in the Superbowl 62-10. club

Well, here's the thing about the SEC. And I live in SEC country:

Yes, they beat each other up, but take practically any SEC team, and they can destroy a BIG 10, or ACC team or maybe even a Big 12 team.

I have started to develop a healthy appreciation for the PAC-10, not because of the USC Trojans... I still don't like them, but for the conference over all. They have improved themselves, in order to compete with Caroll's Trojans!

As for the Big East, so many people have been putting them down, after so many teams bolted for the ACC, that they thought they wouldn't come back. But look at them now.

I don't have anything against the WVU Mountaineers. But, I really hope that an undefeated team like Kansas blows-up the BCS. Why? Because I hate the whole darn system. I want a playoff. And I don't want teams who don't play for a conference championship to be eligible for the national championship.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the Pats, I hate them. Will someone, please take Tom Brady out already?

Congrats WVU!

What happened LSU?

And I seriously hope that Ohio State U doesn't make it to the BCS championship. That would be a travesty.

And as a bonus, the Pats almost lost tonight!

Oh yeah, I forgot, My Auburn Tigers beat Bama! Although, the Tennessee Titans and Vince Young SUCK currently, The Tennessee Volunteers against LSU in the SEC Championship. That WILL BE A GAME!

I still think the Pats are going to have a hard time going undefeated. It's so hard in the NFL to do that. I mean who would've thought a team with a back up QB who hadn't started a game in 3 years, would be able to throw for over 300 yards against the Pats. And the unstoppable offense, got slowed down by the Eagles! We'll see, but my guess is they lose a game or two along the way.

As for WVU! Yatta! As long as we beat Pitt this week we'll be in the BCS Championship Game! I'm so excited. We had national title aspirations at the beginning of the year, but had thought they went down the drain after the USF loss, but this year anything is possible. I do think this year would be the perfect year for a playoff system. How exciting would it be to watch that!!!?????!!!!! Hope they do something soon!

What a crazy NCAA football season it is. LSU blew it when WR Early Doucet failed to line up properly and got a TD called back. Hawaii teaches us that it is better to go undefeated against weak opponents than play good teams, as they will likely get a BCS bowl game. How long will it take to get a playoff in college football? We have been shown that the polls and system are flawed. Did anyone really think that South Florida was ever #2? Did anyone think that mighty Notre Dame would fall so low?

Crazy indeed! This whole year has been full of craziness. I think this year as a whole is a great argument for the need of a playoff system. There is always going to be debate unless it's settled on the field.

That's my point! How can you still rank Ohio State higher than LSU? Who has Ohio State played this year? Look who LSU has had to play week in and week out. And they don't play anymore, while LSU still has to go to Atlanta for the SEC championship!

That's why this system sucks.

Agreed. There are several teams that are eliminated from BCS games, just because they have lost close tough games against quality teams. Florida, the loser of the OU v Mizzou game, the loser of the LSU v Tenn game, and if UCLA somehow wins, they will go to the Rose bowl, if Az beats ASU. This would knock ASU, USC and Oregon out of a BCS game.

It has rewarded teams that have not made to their conference champ games as well. Kansas and Georgia will get BCS at large bids.

For the sake of all college football- LET'S HOPE THAT UW beats Hawai!!!
Jake Locker (the UW QB) is from my tiny hometown, so I will obviously be rooting for the upset.

LSU has been beaten 5-6 times this year, so it's only fair they finally got their second loss.

Sure. The SEC is deep and tough, but they wouldn't have so many bowl eligible teams year in and year out if their teams scheduled tougher non-conference games. Georgia did OK this year for SEC standards with Oklahoma St., Troy, W. Carolina, and Georgia Tech although they got to avoid LSU. Auburn also had a decent schedule (kind of) against Kansas St., South Florida, then NM St. and Tenn Tech.

But most of the teams schedule only one respectible non conference game and 3 powder puffs.
Tennessee played CAL then Southern Miss, Arkansas St., and Louisiana Lafayette.
Florida played Western Kentucky, Troy, FAU, and FSU.
Other than V.Tech, LSU played MTSU, Tulane, and LA Tech.
Kentucky played Lousville, E. Kentucky, Kent St., and FAU.
Other than Clemson, S. Carolina played La. Lafayette, SC St, and North Carolina.
Alabama went 2-2 against W. Carolina, FSU, Houston, and UL-Monroe
Basically, the SEC gets 4 non-conference games and at least 3 of them are typically easy.

Kansas needs to drop even further in the rankings. They only played one tough team and lost. They've got heart, don't get me wrong, but look at their non-conference schedule (C. Michigan, SE Louisiana, Toledo, and Fla Intl), see that they avoided Oklahoma and Texas, and that they had essentially 8 home games to 4 road games. Very undeserving. If they get a BCS bowl then even more teams will be scheduling cream puffs for out of conference games. Before the Missouri game, Kansas was proud to have beaten K.State, a team that Fresno St. handled.

The PAC-10 beats itself up every year and schedules tough out of conference games. Lowly WSU and UW made games @ Wisconsin and vs Ohio State respectively. UW also beat Boise St and travelled out to Syracuse. Meanwhile Oregon throttled @ Michigan and also whipped Houston and Fresno St. And look at USC's non conference games for next year - @ Virginia, vs. Ohio State, and vs. Notre Dame.
The PAC-10 teams only get 3 non-conference games (4 if they go to Hawaii) and typically only 1-2 of them are easy.

Out West, even teams like Hawaii, Boise State, Fresno State, BYU, and Utah, amongst others, could hang in a lot of conferences. The two biggest problems on the West Coast though, is 1. there are not as many teams so you either beat each other up, or you try to schedule teams far away (which is not easy to do) AND 2. The East Coast doesn't get to watch the West Coast teams play as often.

So for any PAC-10 vs. SEC debates. Sure the SEC is bigger and likely better, but they don't do much to prove it. The SEC teams are more likely to go bowling because they get an extra cream puff each year to fatten their record.

Well the system sucks, but I'm not going to reward teams who do lose more than teams who don't. Granted teams like Hawaii aren't comparable to the big schools? Or are they? See Boise St vs Oklahoma last year. I don't think anything other than a playoff will end the debate. My take on LSU good team, but c'mon they squeaked by teams all year, and not every team in the SEC is good. Bottom line is they lost 2 games they should've won, they played a tough schedule and will still get a BCS game. Florida has 3 losses! 3 losses! Why should they even be in the discussion for a BCS game?

A playoff doesn't seem likely anytime soon, but I would love to see something like:

8 teams make it. Champs from PAC 10, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and Big East plus 2 at large. Conference champs are excluded if they fail to make the top 15. BCS standings determine seedings.

4 games mid-December just after final exams (Super Saturday)
2 games January first.
Final game the 2nd Saturday after New Years. Or Friday night to avoid conflicts with the NFL.
7 games total to produce a National Champ.
Locations of all the games and importance are the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Sugar bowls. Higher seeded team determines the location based on its conference affiliation, but all four bowl locations are guaranteed at least a first round game. One location could end up with 3 games depending on seedings and winners. Example of this would be say a PAC-10 or Big-Ten team getting the #1 seeding and playing all 3 games at the Rose Bowl. This would give the higher rated teams more of a home-field advantage.

Every game in the season still matters.
