In which the fake face of Penny comes off (apparently it -- her mother's face changing power -- only lasts 24 hours).
So, anyhow, this second part of this GN was so dumb, that I won't even summarize it. If someone wants to summarize it, they can. Then you (mods) can delete my post. It seems to me that this GN was someone's sexual fantasy given written and drawn form. Disgusting.
Quick details: Thompson Jr. finds out about Penny, pursues the actual person that Penny impersonated, the Haitian gets involved, the story gets really convoluted AND STUPID.
I HATED THIS GN.
WRITERS: Please do better than this. I know you have it in you. But this, was really really low. Especially with some of the well leveled criticisms from last week. I dunno. I am disappointed.
I too was disappointed in this one a bit - though I still hold out hope that all of this is building to something - what with the focus on the Company and several of its members (i.e. Thompson Jr., Penny, Connie, Donna), and the whole Evs Dropper thing.
We might have to put up with a few oddities like this in order to get somewhere special. If not, then I'll be really bummed - but I'm hoping against hope!!
I also seriously agree that this was some demented soap opera wannabe kind of filler, and it really annoyed me to waste my time reading this when there are so many other important things I could have done.. like wax my legs!
Honestly, I have no desire to learn about their sexual exploits or fantasies in the Heroes universe! I don't want to know how involved a mother is with her daughter's promiscuity.. I don't want to know how one partner sees the other one. I just want them to tell a decent story...
'Nuff said.
This GN sucked, and it's not going to take much to beat it next week..
Well I'm coming out of my dark nerd-cave to comment on this one (MCAT* on Saturday, wish me luck! *gulp*)...
It took every fiber of my being to suppress the gag reflex I got from reading this GN. Like others have said, it's like some demented soap opera/sex fantasy (which....that's pretty much what soap operas are anyhow, but I digress...) with a few "superpowers" slapped on so they could call it "Heroes."
Not only was the premise utterly stupid, it was blatantly sexist and seriously demeaning. The only message I got out of this? Men only notice women when they're fake and some "ideal" standard of beauty that someone else (in this case, her own mother) imposes on them. And maybe, just maybe, he'll like you if you're not pretty as long as you put out.
Seriously, writers? That's the message you want to send out?
We had been doing better with the GNs lately, and then this one comes along...*sigh*
This seems out of sync with what the Heroes writing is generally..I thought Kring said they weren't going to bother focusing so much on romances anymore and get back to the overall mythology, after the fiasco of Season 2. Or did I make that up?
They lost sight of the goal here. The impression I got of the first few novels with Donna, and the whole deal with Evs Dropper, was that they were going to give us hints as to who Evs Dropper is that would hopefully tie in with the main storyline. So far, we've got bupkis, except that Evs Dropper is a mole and he's gotten his hands on quite a few of the agents already. And that he's a special, I can assume (unless that was revealed?). I'd like more info on Evs Dropper, please.
Lol, no, if I remember correctly he was a nurse. I'm hoping to be a doctor...but hey, if it doesn't work out, I might wind up being a nurse anyhow. And besides, I'm a girl, so I don't think I'd have nearly as much a problem being a nurse anyhow.
*puts on moderator cap*
Enough with the OT-ness. Back to discussing how God-awful this GN was.

I agree that the GN wasn't that great. The only redeeming factor it had was that it showed a side of super powers that isn't usually seen, but if people had powers in the real world, would be a part of the mix: sex. People with super powers (or access to super powers) would eventually use those powers for less noble purposes than saving the world. Claire's boyfriend was at some point probably a flying peeping tom at the local college. Invisible Claude probably spent some time in women's only areas. Someone who could change their features and were stuck in the friend zone with a beautiful woman would eventually gather as much intel as they could and make a move on her after giving themselves a new look. It's not inspiring but it's true. Just think what someone with advanced mind control would be tempted to do.
I completely agree with your post PJAMESE3, except for one slight change:

Just because a power would give you access to things you may not otherwise have had, doesn't mean everyone would use it that way. Consider the humble handgun. If you have one, you suddenly become much more dangerous, and there are certainly things you can do with one that you couldn't do without one. (Like force people to do things they wouldn't otherwise do.)
However, not everyone who owns a handgun goes out and empties cash registers, or forces people to withdraw funds from their ATM.
I think it would be the same way with super powers - some people would misuse or abuse them, while other people would only use them as tools to make their lives (and possibly the lives of others) better without adversely affecting people who didn't deserve it, or breaking moral or legal codes.

Yes, admittedly not everyone would give in to his or her inner perv. I was painting with a broad brush to make a point. But two things:
1. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." Although the persons in question wouldn't have absolute power, they would still have significantly more power than the normals out there.
2. I wouldn't equate the sexual (or personal use in general) application of super powers with using a gun to threaten someoone or rob a bank. That's a bit extreme. The person with powers could see using his powers selfishly as relatively harmless...on a level with sneaking a peak at his neighbor when she's nude sunbathing at home and he's unexpectedly home from work.

I don't believe - real world- it would necessarily be saints and sinners with powers. Some would go the evil route; some would feel a calling and dedicate themselves to protecting and serving; the majority would be primarily good - or at least neutral - with the occasional act of self-interest...like Clark Kent saving lives but occasionally x-raying the girl's locker room.
Well, from what I'm reading, this all comes back to a specific person's MORAL standpoint.
After all, things have been done in just about every spectrum, so there is black, white, and a multitude of grey shades in between.
So there's a proverbial TON of choices that can be made to cause someone to act the way they do. I'd have to say that because of their personal upbringing, their faith, and their environment are going to be the biggest key factors in determining how or why they're going to use their abilities in a specific way.
But that's getting into theory and hypotheticals, and have nothing to do with this last crappy GN or the show series..
