I think it is more impressive that a HALF-black man has become the president in such a HUGE margin than just a black man. Thats like 2 steps forward in one felled swoop. Not just representing the true diversity of America for the first time in history... but the UNITY of it.
I voted Obama.
I voted for change.
And I am proud to be American for the first time in my life tonight.
I cannot wait for an atheist and a gay to be represented as widely.
Now enough patting ourselves on the back. We still have a long way to go.
Goodnight. |

I voted for McCain. And I dare say I've been proud of America since as long as I can remember. Never more so than when serving with my fellow soldiers during the first gulf war. McCain is a man of such personal distinction as to be nearly unbelievable. His biography is a must read for anyone interested in history, service and leadership.
I wait to see what Obama will really try to do and what he actually accomplishes to make any judgment. I think it's great that the country proved that racism has become a minor issue, it's never been a big deal to me. I work in an environment where I (white male) is in the minority, yet we can quite openly have deep discussions on all topics. I have lunch conversations with a very good friend of mine about his experiences growing up and the discrimination he has had to overcome in the past and occasionally feels even now.
Obama changed his tune to moderation in the last 4-6 weeks of his campaign and if he sticks to the issues that had the most agreement, I think he will be just fine. I voted for Clinton twice and was reasonably pleased with the centrist style results that dominated his 8 years in office.
I was disgruntled with my lack of good choices 4 years ago and had my favorites for this election picked soon after Bush won. Obama and McCain were both at the bottoms of my lists. I was disappointed when Evan Bayh didn't toss his hat in for the Democrats, and when Huckabee diverted votes from Mitt Romney giving the nomination to McCain, I about abandoned all interest completely. IMO there were no acceptable Democrats from the beginning and I got stuck with McCain - who I have to hold my nose to vote for as my Senator every 6 years.
While I deeply respect McCain, I'm not all that jazzed about his legislation and only agree with his fiscal policies. |
