Ok after reading what other people have to say and combining it with my own theories this is what I've come up with:
I think Arthur was born with a natural ability but wanted more, and after seeing the formula work on other subjects injected himself. I think as he had a natural ability already it rejected the synthetic one and left him like he is now.
I think this may also be why claire is so "special" - being the only hero born with a natural ability but it also being a second generation syntheic one. Maybe her blood is the hybrid Arthur needs to perfect the formula to give himself more abilities
This also leads me to believe (against some other theories I know) that nathan was injected as a baby and not later in life as it would have had to have been before claire was born so he could pass it onto her. I think he, nikki, tracey, and barbera were in the same ward at the same time - which is why he has this connection to them
LOL that's what I mean, he's slept with 2 out of 3 of them and he'll prob sleep with babs too. Also when tracey seen him on tv she was drawn to him to approach him for the job.
the Arthur theory may be way off... But what do people think about my theory of why claire is special? I think it makes sense lol
I elevate this thread to the top in hopes that a moderator will come through and make it a topic of its own. Somethin like, "I have an Arthur Petrelli Theory that son Nathan sleeps with all three Ali Carter characters: and however many more there out there."

We don't yet know that Meredith was an injected individual do we? We've confirmed it with Nathan, but what about Meredith and Flint? I like the theory though!
LOL that's why I said I was "right to a certain extent" claire is special because her blood is what's needed to perfect the formula. I think it's safe to say now it's nothin to do with the synthetic part. It's cos kaito put it there LOL. But it is the reason she's special

Arthur: Peter and Gabriel being his sons have very similar abilities in adding on to their own. Nathan who was injected is the mere flyingman we know him to be. I also think Angela can do more than just dream the future, she has too much confidence to just have an ability that works selectively.
Parkman and Parkman are the same as far as we know

the writers are very clever. i think that was like an ironic line now because eventhough parents seem o passdown similar abilities they allways seem toevolve dnt they. maury can only alter perceptions and readmids but matts ability seems to have the ability that sent him to africa. although i dont think thats confirmed yet
ok i got a new theory for how arthur is defeated. After the eclipse temporarily takes his powers, he will not realise that peter will have his back too. Peter will instantly absorb arthurs ability and Arthur will unknowing touch him. since he wont be expectin it he wont block it or anything and peter will take his power away from him. I dont think any of his sons will actually want to kill him, so that fact that someone who took everyones abilities is left completely powerless would be just!
