There's been a lot of talk about this on the spoiler thread, so I thought I'd post a new topic on it.
So how was Arthur able to paralize Angela inside her dream? It may have been Maury, but I think Angela would have known. She's very familiar with character's powers and she knew when Matt was poking around in her head so I think she'd know if Maury was messing with her too. So I think it was Arthur who paralized her.
How could he have done that? I think he has the ability to somehow get into a character's head and shut things down, which paralized Angela. I also think this gives him the ability to take away abilities from other characters, either temporarily or permanently. He might also be able to shut down a mind completely and kill somebody. This would explain how he's able to pull the strings and why Maury would be so scared of him.
I was thinking that as a possiblity too, like he could be an older, better version of Sylar. I also like the power stealing ability. That would be crazy if the other character lost their ability and he gained it. Maybe that would explain why Victoria Pratt and Kaito Nakamura didn't seem to have powers. Maybe he stole theirs.
Exactly, and maybe that's how in one of the upcoming episodes; the Heroes start to lose their powers... Sure it's been written that they lose their powers due to an eclipse; however, I think it's much bigger then that... Maybe due to the fact that Arthur has the ability of power theft, Peter get's the scar... And maybe this is how Adam dies of old age, because his powers where stolen...
I jus assumed that he was like a puppet master like the guy claires birth mum was with, but he's more advanced and people do what he says. As he said to angela "but you won't be able to move" and she was paralysed. This also fits in nicely with my god complex theory in the topic named "my badguy theory" lol
But he was also able to paralize her within her dream, so he has some sort of ability to enter people's dreams, too, so I'm thinking his power either deals with the mind somehow, or he's some sort of mimic and has Maury's ability, or maybe he stole this ability from someone else in the past. Now does anyone else think that maybe it was Arthur and not Maury who caused Angela to attack herself in the jail cell in season 2?
I figured in the Live Chat Monday that he could remove powers permanently, and possibly restore them if he chooses.
It would be a great twist for a guy who heads a company set on giving people powers...
I tend to agree with Action on this one... as we discussed in the live chat on Monday, just imagine removing the ability to dream from someone who's in the MIDDLE of having a dream.
I'd venture to say that it might put that person into a sort of sleep paralysis - the mind is awake, but body is still asleep..., something that I've experienced a few times in my life, which is kinda scary - you're awake, and you know you're awake, but you can't move your body or say anything or even scream... apparently, Action informed me that it was a fairly common thing, so I'm glad I wasn't going crazy during those times, lol.
Although, Action... I don't think I personally believe that Arthur is able to take away abilities forever (like a permanent Hatian thing)... I think that's too drastic for the show, IMO... but maybe he's able to take them away until someone kills him, or renders him unconscious.
However, in regards to the situation between Arthur and Angela, what I find the MOST interesting is that Arthur said, "In fact, you won't be able to move," and coincidentally, Arthur is in a hospital bed, also UNABLE to move... hmm....
ah I jus thought the fact that he was able to paralyze her in her dream was more to do with her own ability actually. As in she's able to interact with people in her dreams. As she was able to speak to peter (like peter could on the rooftop with simmones father) if peter didn't have the spike in his head he would have been able to speak to her and use his abilities too, and I doubt peter was using any abilities to get inside her dream.
It does have to do with her ability - in order to use her power, Angela needs to be asleep, because she dreams the future. What I'm saying is that because her ability to dream was interupted in the middle of her actually HAVING a dream, her mind woke up, but her body was still asleep, thus she's in sleep paralysis.
If that's not the case, then I think it's just Maury trapping her in her own body... but then again, when he did it to Molly, she was asleep... in this instance, we know Angela's awake. Or at least her mind thinks she is.
ah ok I see what your saying, I just didn't understand the theory of him taking peoples powers completely. Of just seemed out of the blue lol. And it's just the fact he said she won't be able to move then she couldn't. But yeah the sleep paralysis theory makes sense.
Ah, sleep paralysis. Freaky stuff. I used to get it almost every Thursday.
No...seriously. It is much more common when you interrupt your regular sleep pattern, especially if you wake up for a bit and then try to go back to sleep. For a while, my regular work schedule had me going in at 7:00 on Mon, Tue, Wed & Fri, and at 10:00 on Thursdays. My wife worked on Thursdays, so I'd wake up for a short while when she was getting up and getting ready, then go back to sleep. For like two months, nearly every Thursday I had at least a short episode of Sleep Paralysis.
Like PK says, your body remains asleep (your eyes are closed, you can't move a muscle), but your mind is awake. Often, you'll see the room you are in (because, consciously, you know where you are). You'll just lie there, trying to lift an arm, a leg, turn your head, anything. But you can't. You might feel a heaviness in your chest, like you're having trouble breathing. (In truth, your body is stuck in the slow breathing you lapse into when you sleep, while your mind is expecting to breath 'normally' like when you are awake.) You might hear things, since technically you are still asleep and part of your brain is too - so you can hear a TV blaring, people talking, gunshots, etc. even though the house is actually quite silent.
Many long years ago, people believed that the condition we now know as sleep paralysis was caused by invisible evil spirits holding you down, perhaps lying on top of you (pressing down on your chest, making it hard to breathe). I can see where they were coming from. Things were less understood back then, and waking up in that state can really freak you out. It messed with my head for a while until I learned what was really going on.
Now, if it happens, I just think to myself that I'm in sleep paralysis, and I do my darndest to wake up. Generally this takes the form of concentrating on one task - moving my left arm, opening my eyes (I know they are shut, even though I seem to be able to see the room around me), etc. Once I get something to respond, my body kicks in and I'm able to drag myself to full consciousness.
One interesting thing about sleep paralysis - if you can recognize that you are in it, and you can relax yourself enough to slip back into a true sleep state, you can sometimes enter what is called "lucid dreaming". This is a state where youa are truly asleep and dreaming, but you realize that fact. Most people who have had this experience will tell you that once you realize you are dreaming, you can often control what happens in your dreams. I've entered the "lucid dreaming" state a few times in my life, but I've only ever managed to do it once from a sleep paralysis state, and that was after I learned it was possible. I'll tell you though, if you can get into "lucid dreaming" and stay there for a while, it can be quite fun!
Dreams, sleep paralysis, lucid dreaming... Truly weird stuff, but quite interesting to think about in the case of Angela. If she was forced out of her dream, maybe she'll be stuck in that state for a while... I wonder what she'd be capable of if she managed to restart the dream and enter a lucid state. Maybe she could shape the future, rather than just dreaming it... Who knows?
Yeah I used to get it quite alot when I was younger. Usually if I'd been out on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, like an over tiredness kinda thing. I was told (which worked awsomely btw) to try moving ur toes and u snap out of it.
Yeah, lucid dreaming is awesome. I often think the Wachowski brothers experienced it and used this idea to develop Neo, since that's what it's like for me, except I'm a sort of super Neo. You can pretty much do anything you want. Don't like being in that prison cell? How about the Bahamas instead. Bam! You're there. I think I want the sky to be orange. It's like being God in your dreams. It's sort of hard to stay asleep once you start lucid dreaming though, at least for me, though I have been able to stay asleep long enough to do some amazing things, though. Of course once you realize it's just a dream, it seems sort of pointless. I've never experienced sleep paralysis, though it does sound scary. Anyway, do you think if Angela realized she was dreaming she could turn it into a lucid dream? What sort of effect do you think that would have with her power? Maybe she could somehow alter the future through her dreams. Anyway, that was sort of a tangent, but lucid dreams are awesome.
